I'm here to paint minis and play tabletop games. And I'm all out of bubblegum... Wait...
But seriously, I'm paint miniatures and make videos and tutorials about it. I'm no expert, but I love sharing my knowledge with the community. I was introduced to the wargaming hobby with Warhammer 40K back in 2019 and immediately fell in love with painting miniatures.
I also like to play tabletop games, specifically using the miniatures that I paint! I am primarily focusing on solo or co-op games right now, such as Five Parsecs From Home, Rangers of Shadowdeep, Five Leagues From the Borderlands, and things like those. I don't have the equipment to properly film a Warhammer 40K or Age of Sigmar Battle Report. At least not yet... Maybe someday! However I do really enjoy the non-competitive aspect of some of these other games. I may also look at ways of playing other games like 40K, Star Wars Legion, One Page Rules, etc. in a horde mode or narrative campaign solo. That could be fun!

How to EASILY Prime Miniatures My Favorite Way!
Hello, I would like to know if I buy some miniatures on Amazon. I am seeing them and it says unprimed. Do I have to buy a primer?
@@castrodaniel58 that is a great question! So primer isn't required in most cases, but it can still help a lot and I highly recommend it! It'll help your paints adhere better, and if you handle your minis a lot for tabletop games, it'll help the paint from rubbing off as easy. Though you can also use a varnish to help protect them instead! There are brush on primers that work decently well if you live in an area where spray cans aren't feasible. I hope that helps! Thanks for commenting!
Really enjoyed these videos. I like how all the steps and rolls are explained, and frankly I like listening to your relaxed voice. Hope the series will continue and you didn't get disheartened by all the little issues you keep apologizing for - there's really no need to worry about those. Having room for improvement is something nice.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I do have plans to continue, I sadly have not been able to work on videos as much as I would like the past couple of months since starting my new job. I am hoping I can get back into content creation very soon though! I really want to continue this campaign, as well as try out some other solo tabletop games! Thanks for the comment!
Not thinning would be my mistake. AP washes are quite tacky and satin-y and leave that weird film over them sometimes. Even thinning with a few drops of water, improved it's flow properties immensely for me. Nowadays be it Pro Acryl or Citadel, I tend to thin my washes, and follow up with highlights. Also I though Matt was short for Matthias...the more you know
That's a great tip too! I hadn't thought to thin them down at all! Thanks for commenting!
I thought washes were magic when I started, but years later I've reached a point where I honestly think they almost always look horrible. The overexaggerated, oily looking shadows they create, just look terrible to me after seeing so much of what people can do with glazing and proper technique. And while edge highlighting and going back over reduce this, I still think it just doesn't look right. I think both oils and enamels are better looking at least and are easier to clean up, highly recommend those to people who are starting to lose that magic love for washes.
Thank you for being so vulnerable with us. That guy looks awesome - coming from a classic contrast painter myself.
Thank you so much for the kind words! It's tough sometimes to open up like that, this was definitely the hardest video I've ever had to make by far.
Extrapolating from tip #6 - Not every miniature painted needs to be a part of an army or a DND campaign or something specific. Like you said, sometimes it can just be for fun.
That's a great addition! Sometimes you just want to paint something!
I haven’t finished the video yet, but I just had to say that this video is exactly what I need to see. I don’t have room for a dedicated painting desk so I’ll definitely check out that portable one you mentioned. When it comes to reducing obstacles to painting, things that have worked for me are keeping all of my supplies in a small tote bag - my wet palette, brushes, jar for water, and just the paints I know I’ll need for the current stage of the models I’m working on (for example, just the basecoat colors). I also try to accept that l’m not always in the mood to paint, but doing any part of the hobby counts, like assembling even one model. Top of my list of things to get now is a good natural light lamp that I can fairly easily move when I’m done painting.
I'm glad the video resonated! Keeping that small tote bag is a great idea! I sometimes bring a little carrying case with just a few models, some paints, brushes, small wet palette, etc. I do think with what you're currently bringing, you might really like what Frontier Wargaming offers! I'm not sponsored or anything, I just think it's a neat product and I've been wanting to save up and get one myself. I probably should put a link in the description now that I think about it lol. That case has an optional add on for an LED light bar too. Not sure how good it is, but might be worth a try. Lastly, I totally agree on sometimes just assembling some models is worth our time. I may not feel like getting my stuff out to paint, maybe I'm not in the mood. Clipping out some bits and flying them together though? I can do that almost any time.
Great video !!!!!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
@@ShinisTabletopAdventures I learn something new with every video I watch 😃😃😃
@@killingtonsnowboarde I'm glad to hear it! Thanks for watching!
At the last step, I'd honestly dry brush it instead, It makes for some wonderful effects if you know what you are doing.
Drybrushing is great! I wanted to try to keep the focus on just the wash in this video, but I probably should have at least mentioned drybrushing, or hinted there would be a future video about it!
6 years ago I had I paint space. Fast forward after a divorce, 4 moves and stuff in storage and a bad relationship, I bought a new house and it had to have a dedicated hobby game room. The house I bought needed some remodeling. So still doing that. But so close to getting my hobby area complete.
Sorry for your rough times recently! Sounds like your new place is going to have a nice hobby space for you to relax and have fun in! I'd love to see it when you get it ready!
@@ShinisTabletopAdventures I will post it on Instagram when done. Cant wait myself.
Good advice and great production quality as usual!

I had problems with thinning paints so I added inks to few base colors, maybe not perfect, but you can see much more color.
I haven't tried inks for that myself, but I've heard it's really good! Inks are usually very saturated and thin, so it makes sense! Thanks for sharing!
i was so confused what this was about till i read your name lmao
Lol that's fair!
Sitting here with the cornstarch at the ready "oooh, THIN the paint."
depends on paints, acrylic is w water tho.
That's true! I do cover that a bit more in the full video.
Yay! As someone who's been interested in painting minitures but scared to start, this is perfect for me. Thanks for posting!
You're very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Welcome to the hobby! Some advice to start: Don't go buy a bunch of big paint sets. Also don't buy a whole ton of miniatures. It's really easy to get overwhelmed by it all, especially at first! Start small with a starter set for painting, and then just one or a handful of minis. Paint them and have fun! They probably won't be perfect, but that's okay! You painted them and had fun!
you did roll to see if they were rivals, they werent
Ah good! I forget sometimes since it can be several hours, days, and sometimes weeks in between my pre-game, the battle, and post game sessions. I don't always have a lot of time to play or record, so I do it in sections when I can. Thanks for watching!
I think if Porche was painted she would gain experience.
Good news then, because she does get painted after this haha!
@@ShinisTabletopAdventures can't wait till the next adventure
@@r0llntider me either! Hopefully I can get it recorded soon!
Use paint thinner bro.
That’s just wrong tho??? You use water and a wet pallet
@@datb0013 doesn't have to be a wet palette! But sure makes it easier! In the full video I show this by just using a plastic lid.
@@ShinisTabletopAdventures honestly though i really don't see an advantage to no wet pallate, i made mine out of literal garbage (fast food container, wet paper towels, parchment) for the options it gives you it's kinda unbeatable
@@datb0013 no I completely agree! I use one pretty much all the time! I love it! I just wanted to show a brand new painter that they didn't necessarily need to go buy a new tool or DIY their own. It's not a required item, just a really useful one!
You should not use pure white but use an off white instead, then use pure white as a final highlight
Yup! That's exactly what I explain in my video on painting white!
Awesome video, learning alot about painting from your technique.
Thanks so much! And glad to hear it!
First?
Yup!
This is great - probably the best 5pfh playthrough I've seen in terms of seeing hiw the game actually plays.
Thanks so much! I try to explain the rules when I can, or at least my thought processes on why I do certain things. I do make mistakes sometimes, but oh well, it usually isn't a big deal!
I would recommend using a bit thinner consistency of paint to your layering than you do with basecoating. It's a little easier to control and it has a slight translucency that makes the transition look a bit less stark (think of it as a very heavy/dense glaze if you like).
This is great. I’m just starting to paint again after thirty years away (and I wasn’t very good when I was ten!), and the wash technique has left me frustrated. I’ll give this a go on my minis. Thank you 🙏🏻
Welcome back to the hobby! Glad to have you back! I do hope this helps, it's nothing too crazy, but sometimes we just don't think of some of these steps. I certainly didn't when I first got started!
I paint a lot of 6mm tanks and regularly just undercoat white, wash dark brown then dry brush sand.
That's a good process for them! Especially when they are that small.
That wasn’t red paint! It was the blood of his enemies!!
It's true. I bottle all the blood for use later. Can't waste it!
I am a bird carver and afterward, I paint them. I used washes all the time, but never thought to go back and punch up the highlights. Thank you.
Oh that's awesome! I'm glad this can be useful for people even outside the miniature painting hobby.
This may sound really silly… watching you shake that bottle helped me as much as the rest of the video. I feel like an idiot when I’m shaking the paint but now I know it’s how it’s done lol… or we are both idiots 😂
Hey it's not silly at all! Sometimes we just don't know how to do things yet, and that's okay! I left that bit in there kind of as a joke, but I also thought it was good to show that you should REALLY shake those bottles! Some like Army Painter come with little metal mixing balls in them to help mix them too!
I didn’t even know o could take the damn tops off the dropper bottles 😢
@@robertjameson1959 I originally found out by squeezing one too hard and the whole top came out! Lesson learned that day haha
Thanks for the tutorial, looking forward to trying this out.
Glad you liked it! Once you get the hang of it you'll be able to thin down any paint to the consistency you want!
Editing is fine, another great video !!!!!
Thanks so much! I appreciate that!
If my editing is bad, I blame my headcold that I've had while working on it lol.
Thin my paints bro!
Hand delivered thinned paints coming right up!
Good info. As a related option, old fashion dry brushing the original color after the wash will give a softer transition.
That's very true! Drybrushing is a great technique, but I didn't want to introduce too many new things for beginners in one video. I will have to bring that up when I make my dry brushing video though!
@@ShinisTabletopAdventuresGood point :-)
I've been using "Pigma Micron" pens for my miniatures and they are really great as well. Incredibly fine tip and very good ink, that (afaik) doesn't easily bleach out over time. And they are cheaper than the Gundam pens - for the money of one Gundam Pen, you can pick up a box of Microns with a variety of colors. A friend of mine uses a metallic-silver sharpie (Edding) to paint the edges of blades and it looks really amazing and gives them a very "sharp" look.
Oh very nice! I already had some Gundam pens from trying to panel line some Gunpla, but I know at least one other person had recommended Micron pens as well. I might have to pick them up!
@@ShinisTabletopAdventures You get a box of Microns in multiple colors for the price of one Gundam Pen, so that's really neat, but I have no clue how they'd stand up to one another in a direct comparison. That could be an interesting topic for a video, see how they compare when both are new and then use them both for some time, see how they handle wear and tear and see how well the ink retains its color when exposed to sunlight.
Depending on the miniature, you can also save yourself a lot of time by pinwashing. Like in this case, there's no need to cover the entire helmet in a wash that you'll mostly paint over anyway. Just use the wash around the band on the helmet, you might have to dillute it a little and then carefully blend in the area where the wash stops, but the effect is worth it. I've found that you can do this not just with washes but also with contrast paints. Specifically, I primed some BattleMechs in off-white and then carefully painted some apothecary white contrast paint into recesses and around armor panels, the effect is very sublte and good. Nuln Oil would be much too harsh. Only works for bright or vibrant colors, though.
This is very good advice! The main reason I covered the entire mini in the wash was to show how it could look and be "good enough". And since my earliest minis I absolutely drenched them not knowing any better lol. Basically I can "fix" them by coming back over with my highlight color. Your advice is fantastic though! I hadn't really thought to try Contrast Paints for that yet either!
@@ShinisTabletopAdventures When I look at my early minis... well, I've been there too. You have a great looking paintjob, the colors are vibrant and nice, they perfectly match your idea... and then you put a wash on there and it suddenly looks really drab and the color is all wrong. This can be very frustrating, but once you get the hang of how to use washes and then get a knack for highlighting, it's all good. This video does a great job explaining how to counteract the issues with washes and the Snow Trooper miniature looks absolutely gorgeous with the selective highlights. Makes the whole thing look realistic and also visually appealing. Making a purely white mini look interesting is no small feat and seeing how the wash can do some heavy lifting in adding some very subtle color-variety is a very important lesson to learn.
@@h.a.9880 thank you so much for the kind words! I've only been in the hobby a few years, so I've got a lot to learn still, but I enjoy sharing what I do know with everyone else. If it helps even a handful of people I'm happy with it.
@@ShinisTabletopAdventures I've picked up minature painting myself during 2020, so I'm still learning and the setbacks of early painting misadventures are still fresh. Currently, I am working my way through a Kislev army in 10mm scale for an upcoming Warmaster session and slowly losing my mind over how cramped these tiny miniatures are lol. That being said, I think I should also mention that beyond the contents your videos, the technical aspect/production value of these videos is also very well executed. Your camera setup and sound is fantastic and your explanation is short and to the point. I like that a lot, consider me subscriber 1001.
@@h.a.9880 I only started at the very end of 2019, so not long before you! I haven't tried any 10mm miniatures yet, but that sounds pretty hard. I appreciate that! I've been really trying hard to learn how to make better videos, from the content itself to also filming it well and using decent lighting, audio, camera, etc. So I'm happy that you noticed it! Welcome to the Adventurer's Guild! Lol
I have found that making the eyes look off left or right helps with the look. Looking straight on sometimes gives the minis a “deer in headlights” look.
It definitely can! Usually if I am pointing them straight ahead, I try to make sure they touch up against the top eyelid, and that the pupil isn't too small. That helps a bit! But aiming off to one side also looks really good and helps add some visual interest!
Mann this is sick! You could paint him like Kix
Thanks! That is actually what someone suggested, I believe on one of my shorts. I really like that idea so I think that's what we're going to go with!
Good video Shini. I've been painting Napoleonics for years and still wrestle with the Nuln oil and wash application. I do prefer the "campaign" look but sometimes too much is too much....
Thanks! And that's pretty awesome, I've not seen any Napoleonic minis in person! A wash can definitely make them look like they've been "in the field" for a while.
Biggest mistake: not to spend 10,000 at once. WH getting more expensive day by day. Spend NOW
I do have a rather large pile of unpainted minis... Though my 3D printer isn't helping me with that either lol!
@@ShinisTabletopAdventures man you cripple my dividend
Isn't this just basically the whole battle ready vs parade ready look? The snow trooper looked sick after the highlights but still i just keep them battle ready because i do my highlights before i shade/wash tbh.
Basically yeah! But a lot of people who are brand new to painting may not know how to get from battle ready to parade ready, or even what those terms mean.
@@ShinisTabletopAdventures yea i see your point, i tried to explain it to my gf the other day that is new to warhammer and she was confused lol I'll show her this video honestly since you explained it very well
@@AGxKHAOS I've been helping some of my friends who basically had never held a brush before, and it was surprising to me how many terms or techniques that they had just never heard of. Basically they had never really been exposed to the hobby at all before. When I tried to show them videos to help, a lot of them were just slightly too advanced for their current skill level, and they needed something for the absolute beginner. I hope your girlfriend enjoys the video and has fun with the hobby!
Give oil washes a try sometime. No need to repaint the layers. Just take a small makeup sponge dipped in some oil pain solvent and wipe away the areas you don’t want the wash
They are on my list! One of those things I haven't gotten around to trying yet, but am sure I'll love them!
100% once you try oil (or enamel) you never go back to acrylic washes.
@@cyborgbadger1015 well then I'm excited to try them!
i'll be honest, whilst I don't like the green you used, that is a tidy paint job... subbed!
That is fair! I don't have a lot of variety in my Speed Paints unfortunately, mostly because I only owned the Starter Set and a handful of individual paints I've purchased locally. I probably would have chosen a less vibrant green if I had one lol. Thanks for the sub, welcome to the Adventurer's Guild!

Awesome video! Glad I found your channel as I start my painting journey. Would you happen to have a good recipe for a reddish bronze?
Thanks so much! I'm not sure if it will quite be what you're looking for, but Army Painter has some Speed Paint Metallics, and both Talos Bronze and Brazen Copper have a great reddish hue to them. You can see them in action in my D&D Party video here: czcams.com/video/kp5IPoiYUlg/video.html Other than that, I sadly don't have any good mixes or recipes for you to try, but there are also some very helpful individuals in my Discord that might be able to help out as well!
awesome - thanks for the shoutout. I really like the tips shared on the discord. Inquisitor is set in Eisenhorn books sorta setting - inquisitor teams - Larger models can be a fun change from working on typical 28mm army building (bolt action, 40k... etc.) It is Don - but I also go by Torg on local PNW boards - or "Torg_or" (Torg in Oregon) ... when torn is taken as a name. Also my blog is "Torg's blog" so there is that.
Of course! Thanks for sharing your models with us to see! I've not tried anything larger just yet, but if you check the 3d printing channel in the Discord you'll see I'm about to start one soon!
