Atlantic crossing - we've hit a whale!

We lose our engine, escape a small fire, run into a gale, lose our steering and then, to round it off, we hit a whale. This is our second leg sailing east across the North Atlantic Ocean, from Bermuda to the Azores. Our first leg in the previous video was sailing up from the Caribbean. But we're really not in the tropics any more! Transatlantic, Bluewater, Offshore, April/May 2023, Vancouver 34...

    Any TRUE sailor doesn't want any background sound copy-pasted from a heavy metal band or Mozart for that matter. Obviously many cross Oceans like they bask on a beach in Spain with blasting speakers all over… So this is an excellent video of people who are true sailors… although I quite don't understand how you can cook a starter engine just like that. But after 62 years of mistakes on many type of boats and seas who am I to put the blame on good sailors who post relevant videos? PS. To catch fish in high seas try to tow different lines at various depth… I always felt that three are best. Don't ask me why, its just an impression based on practical experience. Then again 3 a knots speed would work better than 6 kn. unless you wanna catch the rare kind of fish training for the Olympics. Thank you for sharing and please post more. Cheers

    Out of interest have you reinforced anything for your drogue, or is it just connected to stern cleats?

    • @theoddvoyage
      @theoddvoyage Před měsícem

      Embarrassingly, it's meant to be on the stainless chainplates we had made... but did not yet fit! So part of our on-board discussion for this blow was whether to risk it on the stern cleats, or try some other storm tactic. Digging under the side-deck we found the cleat backing was very substantial, so it felt worth the risk on balance. At least this time. I don't think it's a great plan otherwise :)

    • @theoddvoyage
      @theoddvoyage Před 2 měsíci

      The large circular steel plate on the cockpit sole is where the pedestal for the steering wheel would normally be. That pedestal was removed on this tiller-steered version, and the plate just covers the hole. There's not much under there now except the connector between the tiller and the rudder shaft.

    Out of interest, why 3 hours each for night watch? Why not just take it in turns to get a solid 8 hours? Being able to sleep properly is the only reason I'd want anyone on a boat with me.

    • @theoddvoyage
      @theoddvoyage Před 3 měsíci

      It's a good question. Three hours seems to be a 'natural' cycle for me. It's about the limit of time I can concentrate without really wanting someone else to have their turn. It's also about as long as we ever go without needing to do some sail changes. We have a rule that no-one is allowed out of the safety of the cockpit without the other being awake. And some of that work is better as a two-person job. 3 hours is about enough to get some REM sleep. You've made me think though - we should really try for longer and see what happens!

  • @Coleen_West
    @Coleen_West Před 3 měsíci

    Really nice...-- QUESTION -- I see some comments on reviews about these having either cast iron or lead keels. Do you know what keel you have on this one? The comment I read said that the transome "dragged" with the iron keel. I certainly can't notice anything like that on this one. Not sure if I understand that issue tbh.

    • @theoddvoyage
      @theoddvoyage Před 3 měsíci

      This one is lead. The V34 is a 'stretch' version of the V32. The extra two feet in the cockpit made the first few builds a little stern heavy. There wasn't room inside the (fibreglass) keel to move the iron ballast forward, but the switch to denser lead made the move possible. I don't know of anyone who is gloomy about having one of those early 1990s builds, so it either isn't a big issue or there aren't many of them on the market.

    Mindful that we are not predictors. When many variables, decision quality has nothing to do with the immediate outcome. It comes from properly weighting up risks and gain expectations and make sure you re winning long term. We are surfing the waves of probablilities. Same with deciding on a reef. Never blame yourself when you put in a reef and wind drops or you reef out and wind picks up. Pointless. If we were out there to maximize comfort, we would not be there at all. Its just a physical exercise to enjoy, part of boat life. 2/3 of your reefing decisions will end up being worth anyway and that is more than enough. Very lovely videos, thank you for yr content, and keep up the good work. Greetings and best of wishes from a sailor / professional gambler

    So nice! -- QUESTION -- when I listen carefull, @00:47 I think I hear your engine running. Is that possible or is it a generator? If it is the engine, can i ask why in such strong winds you would run the engine too? Is it for safety or something?

    • @theoddvoyage
      @theoddvoyage Před 5 měsíci

      Oh yes - well spotted :) The short answer is we were sailing too close to the wind, and needed the engine assist to hold that angle. Cheating! The longer context is that we were in the Irish Sea, heading upwind to the marina at Malahide. We were running out of daylight and we were also running out of time to make the tide at the channel entrance. As we were getting closer inshore, the wind rotated against us. Rather than veering out to sea with the wind change, and then tacking back later, we opted to use the engine to keep us on course and on time. Hope that makes some kind of sense - reads like gibberish now I've typed it!

    Absolument génial cette vidéo! J'adore votre humour! En tout cas bel exploit, ça fait pas mal de kilomètres! Plein de choses ont résonné pour moi: le temps du montage et démontage du camp, les journées dans la tente quand il pleut ou qu'il fait trop de vent (vive les liseuses de l'ère moderne!), enlèver la combinaison sèche, le froid, le petit stress permanent de l'ours polaire, l'installation du périmètre de sécurité (nous on avait juste des détecteurs de mouvement). Par contre vous semblez avoir quand même eu du mauvais temps globalement... Même en 2022 où on avait eu pas mal de pluie on avait eu mieux il me semble. Nice! -- QUESTION -- regarding a hanked-on storm sail.. how do you lower or furl a honked-on storm sail if the weather keeps getting worse? The winds hit say 40knotts with 55 or 60 gusts.. Do you simply let the sail rip and tear apart or what do you do? there is no furl and no way to lower it other than going up on the deck during horrible weather???

    • @theoddvoyage
      @theoddvoyage Před 6 měsíci

      It's a tough question. If things had gotten any worse, I think we would have let out the drogue before doing anything else. Then judged it again once we saw how the boat steadied. There's no way of getting the storm sail in without a trip to the foredeck. Maybe the judgement call on doing that would be believing the sail put the boat itself at risk?
