Troubleshooting Video Display Issues - CompTIA A+ 220-1101 – 3.14
Let’s have a look at how to fix video display issues.
Download PowerPoint: itfreetraining.com/handouts/ap11/3d20.pptx
Missing Video
One of the most common problems you will come across is missing video. The first step in troubleshooting is to check that cables are plugged in. This includes the power cables and making sure the monitor is on. Cables can appear to be plugged in, however, even if they are out by a little bit, you won’t get a video signal. So, the first step is, make sure they are plugged in. Just to make sure, I will often pull the cable out and then plug it back in again, making sure it is all the way in.
In the next step, I would check that the video source is correct. Most monitors will have multiple input ports. For this monitor, there are two. So, I will unplug it from one port and plug it into the other one. If you have a remote control, you could use the remote control, but there is an easier way that I will show you in a moment.
In this example, the monitor is off. So, all I need to do is switch it on. Of course, this is one of the first things you should check for. When you check the cables are plugged in, check the power cables are plugged in and the power is on. Even if the power was on, often I will switch the monitor off and back on again. On most monitors this will trigger it to test each input port to see if it is connected. This can be easier than cycling through the input ports looking for the one that is connected.
On your monitor, there should be a button or an option to change the input source. For this monitor, there is a button on the back which when pressed will cycle between the two input ports.
In a lot of cases, you will find the problem is that a cable has come out or the monitor is set to the wrong input port. Assuming of course it is plugged in and switched on, which I assume you would have checked before doing anything else!
Damaged cables
If you are not getting a video signal, or an intermittent connection or distortion, it is possible that you are dealing with a damaged cable. Modern cables often use blade-style connectors, which offer improved durability over older pin-style versions. Despite their enhanced robustness, blade connectors are not impervious to damage. Consequently, it's wise to conduct a detailed inspection to verify that your connectors remain in optimal condition.
Sometimes the damage is noticeable, as in these examples. At other times you may not be able to see the damage. To test the cable, use a known good cable. If the known good cable works, then there is something wrong with the other one.
Cable Compatibility
Problems can also occur with cable compatibility. For example, HDMI has a number of different standard cables. For the exam, you won’t need to know the different cable standards, but you may get a question that will test to see if you understand that some cables are of better quality than others. Better-quality cables allow for high data speeds, or as I like to say, not all cables are created equal.
Cable manufacturers don’t have to make their cables to these standards, but if you do see logos like these, you know what standard the cable was designed for. If the cable does not meet a particular standard, have a look at the specifications of the cable and see if the max data speed is listed. This will allow you to determine what maximum resolution the cable supports.
As before, test if this is the problem using a known good cable. Generally, the best cable to test a monitor with is the cable that came with the monitor if it is available. Unfortunately, there are a lot of cheap cables on the market, and often you won’t be able to tell what the cable supports by looking at it. Don’t assume, test the cable to make sure that it is working and that it supports the resolution that you are trying to use.

    What is "overhead"?

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining Před 4 dny

      In computer transfers, overhead refers to the extra work or data required to complete the actual data transfer itself. It's like the packaging and administrative tasks involved in sending a box. While necessary for a smooth transfer, the overhead doesn't contribute to the actual content being transferred. Thus, if your data connection has a 10% overhead, the maxium data use you will be able is send 90% since 10% is lost to overhead.

      Glad to hear that you like the videos. The most likely culprit is a setting in your computer's BIOS. The BIOS controls the startup behavior of your computer. There might be an option called "Restore on AC Power Loss" or something similar enabled. This setting tells the computer to automatically turn back on when power is restored after a power outage. In some rare cases, a malfunctioning PSU could cause this behavior. The PSU supplies power to all components in your computer. If the PSU has a fault in its circuitry, it might send a signal to the motherboard to turn on even when you haven't pressed the power button.

    I don’t know the cleaner in question, but… I had a fellow student whose homework floppy disk (yes, I’m that old) was unreadable when turned in to the professor two weeks in a row. Upon questioning, the student declared that they had completed each assignment as soon as they got home, then stuck the disk to the fridge (yes, with a magnet) so they wouldn’t forget it when they grabbed their lunchbox. The professor shared the story, not to embarrass the student (didn’t work), but to demonstrate the logical steps in troubleshooting computer issues, including talking through user/customer actions

    What does a humanoid cat have to do with anything you're talking about?

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining Před 4 dny

      The cat driving the car is an abstract image about performance problems in that that car is catching fire while driving thus effecting the cars performance. Like a hot computer would effect the performance of the computer. Rather than having a white background, we have been experimenting with different backgrounds. Some of the concepts in computers are pretty abstract so it is hard sometimes to create an image that is not to abstract and shows the concept. This video was done with AI a while ago, since then we have gotten better generating images and also the AI images have gotten better. So we are getting better at having something interesting to look at, but not to abstract the viewer can't understand. We feel we are getting better at getting the right mix with the newer videos. I think you have to be willing to try new things to make your videos better and makes changes as required if it is not working.

    Ive noticed modern laptops dont often beep, but flash the power led in a sequence, and they usually can be looked up on the manufacturers web site. I have a room of Desktops at work, 25 or so, and each morning between 3 and 5 dont power on, its started about 2yrs ago, with one at a time, and became more as the months passed. no screen activity, can here the fans spinning, and that it. removed the PC from the room, and plugged it in somewhere else, and it worked fine, take it back to the room, worked fine, then the next day, a different 3 - 5 PCs do the same thing, at first we were checking hardware, as this video shows, and swapping out PSU's but in the end, it seems that that part of the building cannot support the electrical needs of the entire building, it is a very old build, and they are now looking at upgrades, but in the mean time, I setup GPO's to prevent users from powering off the PC's on a night, all they are allowed to do is restart. worse yet, I even had it happen in the room, when trouble shooting software, and the restart didnt come back on, just black screen.. doncha just love IT.

      Thanks for info about the laptop. We need to start adding more information about laptop in our videos as we tend to just cover desktops. You have an interesting problem with that computer lab. It makes it hard when you have an old building with power problems like that. You could put a power monitor to get a measure of the power draw. Maybe that would help to give to your manager to help justify getting and upgrade.

    Where can I got the post code cards that you used at the end of the video?

      We got that one from ebay. You can also get them from Amazon. They are not something that is commonly sold in computer stores.

    There is one step we omitted to make it a bit easier to understand, but in hindsight we should have left it in. In the old days, the BIOS was stored in a ROM chip. The ROM chip was slow compared wth RAM. However back than memory was expensive so the CPU ran code from the BIOS ROM even though it was slower.. As RAM size increased, they added an option called shadow BIOS. The CPU still run the code in BIOS, however when shadow BIOS is enabled, the BIOS will copy itself into RAM and run from there. As time when on, since RAM was quite large, shadow BIOS was enabled BIOS by default. Later on, the option shadow BIOS was removed from BIOS and just left enabled. So nowadays, the CPU still executes initially from BIOS or UEFI direct from the chip, but since shadowing is enabled, it will copy itself in RAM and run from there.

    What do you mean by replication? Thank you for your videos!

    • @itfreetraining
      @itfreetraining Před 23 dny

      Replication is the action of copying or reproducing something. In the case of DNS, this is the process of making the DNS secondary zone match the primary zone. That is, replication process will add, change or delete records in the secondary zone to match the primary. In the case of Active Directory, when a record is changed it is replicated using Active Directory so all the other copies have the same copy. If to changes occur on different servers, Active Directory uses a last write win, that is, the newest change will be used.
