Iceland Bike Tour Day 31: Cycling Sandgerði to Vogar Camping (End of Trip)
My last day of the Iceland bikepacking tour! This was filmed on 25th August 2023, and covers the cycle ride back to Vogar camping. Along the way, I stopped by Keflavik airport to check out the legendary 'Bike Pit'. There were no bicycle boxes there - something you might want to keep in mind when planning a cycle tour around Iceland.

Have been dipping in and out of your tour videos of Iceland. I have to say what is the attraction of cycling in Iceland? It seems a vast unforgiving barren place to ride. The weather can be unpredictable and the wind unreal. Not a place I want to ever ride a bicycle. What made you decide to ride there? Sorry if you mentioned it at some point, but I have only dipped in and out of your videos so might well have missed why. Good to see you back on your Thorn Nomad though.

I think that's a fair point - and a little of the reason why i filmed these videos in the way that I did! A lot of youtubers show the epic drone shots, and select frames of Iceland and it can look awesome. The reality is that for the most part, the actual cycling is what you see in these videos - pretty barren, quite hilly, and killer winds! Now that said, I think the Westfjords were by far the best area to cycle in Iceland, and definitely worthwhile. The overall experience of cycling in Iceland is good, but have to say I have no particular desire to go back to Iceland to cycle any time soon!

Just bought a Brooks B17. Rode with it 1000KM. Within the first 10 hours, a center longitudinal ridge started to develop. Very painful as you sit on a spine. I contacted the company and they did everything possible to blame me, making assumptions about mishandling the saddle. I just rode it! Maybe it's a good saddle when not defective but if it is defective as mine was, the company will do everything they can to blame you and not take any responsibility, not even offering an exchange. Buy from better companies!

Just arrived home after 3 beautiful weeks on Amorgos. We took a few ferries starting and finishing in Rafina. Rafina is more chilled than Piraeus and only 35 Euros by Taxi from the airport. The ferry we like the most is the Small Cyclades Lines -'Express Skopelitis'. It's more reminiscent of the good old days of Greek ferries, and when the Drachma made Greece so ridiculously affordable. So much for joining the EU. Greece is expensive now.

It went together easily in less than an hour. czcams.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.

When I go paintballing for the weekend I end up with loaded front and rear panniers AND a trailer. extreme touring. my biggest issue was 67 punctures in one tyre when I got some hawthorn stuck in it. I've got a topeak journey and a radical designs which are light and easy to attach, I can't knock them as it makes packing less of a chore and having had the shimmy of death with front panniers it can be safer with a light trailer. on and off trains can be easier than having to unload the bike and carry it in and out onto a crowded platform. My legs for some reason have decided they don't want to play anymore at the same level so I'm experimenting with a mid drive system to get them working again and a trailer enables me to carry a solar panel and charger for the battery taking me off grid. the trailer takes my camp set up. as ever kissing gates are an arse no matter what you do and also when the national cycle route decides to take you over railway bridges.

Why do bicycle tourist always eat fake food when on a tour? Meaning, not real food that they eat normally. Food bars, gels, powders etc are not real food. Oats, rice...yes! Fruits, vegetables that can be lightly steamed in a little bit of water. Black beans or whatever type you like, mixed with the rice and some steamed veggies are MUCH MORE healthier and advantageous to refuel the body. Breakfast: oats and a banana/fruits raisins. Lunch: apple or orange, a simple sandwich - canned tuna or chicken. Dinner: anything with high protein and carbs - spaghetti or rice/chili or beans mixed with veggies. These items can be bought in small quantities and still have enough left over for more meals: the rice, canned tuna/chicken, broccoli already chopped up in a prepackaged bag, baby carrots too the same way, rice: I buy a 1lb bag which will last for a few servings. Just my opinion.

A small note about disc brakes going wrong... agreed about hydraulic ones, but there are also mechanical ones, just not as common or thrown as standard by manufacturers... Mechanical disc brakes have several advantages, while also being easy to maintain (if not easier) as rim brakes: - they don't get clogged with mud as rim brakes do - you don't have to worry about rims failing because wall abrasion (yup, that's a thing, and with disk brake you'd only loose brake function, not whole wheel) - the pads are smaller, you can carry more (then again, there are also rim brakes where you only replace the rubber pads, and you don't need to remove the wheel...) - i think with right rotor+pad type, they also last much longer (semi-metallic in my case). this however is just my opinion, same can be true with real quality v-brake pads too.
