Depressed People Use Language Differently
Recent research found that absolutist words are indicative of depression.
It’s been known for a while, and it’s hardly surprising, that the more depressed someone is the more they use negative words and ruminate to toxic levels.
It’s also not news that depressed people’s language, both verbal and written, becomes more self-referential during depression, and the more suicidal they feel the more first-person pronouns they tend to use - pronouns such as ‘my’, ‘myself’, ‘I’, and ‘mine’. They also use considerably fewer second and third-person pronouns, such as ‘they’, ‘he’, ‘she’, and ‘them’.
It’s not clear whether this increase in self-referential language (and decrease in language relating to others) is indicative of a causal mindset of depression or a result of depression. I suspect it’s a bit of both.
But this new research has found a linguistic style even more predictive of depression than self-referential terms.

This week’s video deals with helping clients who are mean... to themselves. Over-blaming the self is one common feature of depression and low self esteem so it's important we help some clients moderate this form of psychological self harm. I don't know about you but as I get older I blame people, including myself, less. I think life teaches you to see a blend of causes in less simplistic terms:...

People who are perfectionists, have OCD, etc. are most likely that way because of some sort of childhood trauma or unreachable expectations. Therefore, they're already prone to depression.

Thank you Mark, for a very interesting video. I used to follow a number of people on Twitter, most of who like me are concerned about the destruction of the environment. However the absolutism of the language used by many of them, amounted to saying that we may as well give up, as the planet was doomed. This was having a negative effect on me, making me moody and more absolutist myself. I found the easiest solution was to cease using Twitter for the moment. The trashing of the planet is a serious problem, but despair is not the way to fix it. Scientists have mapped out a path for us to solve the environmental problems brought about capitalism, it simply requires the political will to enact the changes. (A major problem, is a generation of political leaders who either deny there is a problem, for example the Republicans, or those that think a small amount of tinkering with Capitalism will be sufficient, when what is needed is major reforms) We have got through serious problems before without despairing, for example my parent's generation survived the second world war without giving up hope. Having a positive mindset, even in the face of great problems, is a sign of a healthy mind.

Right. So, as a therapist, what do you do with this information? How do you create a shift in the use / misuse of language? Pointing the absolutist language to the client is a first step. Might you explore paradoxical approaches for resistance? Can you provide examples?

I'm an adopted child. Eventhough my adoptive family is nice to me, I still feel I don't have a family. Specially during reunions. And in school coz I'm using my biological parent's surname. It's so painful and hard to answer questions like "why is your surname different?" My adoptive family is quite well-known. And I can't feel that I really belong to them coz everyone knows my surname is different. That makes me feel alone and shy to talk to anyone. Coz I want to avoid questions about my real family. I feel like I don't have a right. I need to avoid conflicts because I know they look down at me coz my real parents abandoned me. It's hard

I can't speak for myself here, but I'm pretty sure there are people out there in the world that overcome their inferiority complex and gain confidence only to have people tell them they have a superiority complex. They're not even trying to have a superiority complex either, yet people say it any to put them down. This is why it's important to think for yourself.

So many thoughts ... This was written two years ago, so the chances of you reading this are low. But by putting this down at least I can probably remember these thoughts better. There was and is such a high (no pun) level of drug addiction and other types of addiction in my family. I think almost everyone in my family is a drinker or a user of some sort. My dad was 40 years older and went into 'spin dry' when I was a teen. With many members of my family it didn't last ... I think that's statistically true for most addictions, people have to go through treatment several times before it sticks. Perhaps it works faster and sticks better when combined with NLP, hypnosis and other forms of emotional regulation. Perhaps those distinctions are the things that mean a person can more easily say (and mean) "I WAS an addict." I am trying to imagine relatives having used these techniques along with abstaining from the substance. I have relatives for whom I would love to use the tools to help them quit, but I am not sure if it would work. I have a niece who has asked me to hypnotize her, I am willing, but after she asks and I say I can try she 'disappears' ... Her fears and self-sabotage are too great to even try. Perhaps after your next training opens I will gain insights to help me overcome such issues.
