One Hundred Year Old Mortise Lock Repair? Sometimes It's A Fail Part 2 @fasteddyskeysexpress
One Hundred Year Old Mortise Lock Repair? Sometimes It's A Fail Part 2. The next day I returned to the customer that retrieved a used mortise lock that was in good shape. I opened the mortise lock up to check to see if every part was in its place and operating well. After that I went ahead to reinstall the mortise lock. The customer purchased this used mortise lock from Architectural Antiques from Ian. He manages the locks there. The customers cost for this old lock? $135.00. After I was done installing this lock the customer was supper happy. They really like their old lock. Most folks do.

So My first thought was to get a used lock body that was still in good shape. I told the home owner to go and see if Archite...

Night Latch Lock Kicked Open - Installation Of A Different Option. We found that the door frame was not stable enough to replace this lock with a new night latch lock after being kicked out! So we decided to cover the whole in the door with a DonJo whole filler plate. And then drilling for the fresh installation of a deadbolt above the old application on a door that was only 1 3/8 in thick. We ...

Eddy, you think that was bad? I once saw a Kwikset deadbolt installed on storefront door. (No, I'm not joking.)
LOL! Yes that application is brought all the way from the southern border.
Wish that worked for me but didn't.
It does take a little practice
or use a lishi instead of using nastf, that's another option
We do rely on them. For what ever reason at the time I did not mention them.
@@fasteddyskeysexpress I love lishis, but sometimes you can just buy the code- it’s cheap and easy and time effective
As long as you understand all the steps tp programming most these keys the Lishi's do come in handy! One of my guys Uses Lishi almost 100% of the time.
@@fasteddyskeysexpress yea they take practoce for sure. NASTF is nice too because you don't have to messa round in the rain or hot weather and if your super busy, it gives key info quickly! I use both, depending on the situation
Yes Time is Money and Money Is Time.
Awesome Work Mr. Mann 😎 👍
Thanks 👍
Holy smokes! Yeah, it wouldn't have been a locksmith doing the original install. Obviously someone with no experience thought that was the way to go...or worse the owner bullied them into doing it. Far from conventional, maybe the only one known to mankind...lol!
LMAO Funny! I was starting to think I was the only person who held that opinion! Well when they get broke into I can always sell them Adams right MS Bolts and install them. I don't think the company owners demanded this application that was installed. But yes it blew me away.
why didn't you just make a new spring for it? I've had to do that alot here in New Mexico.
I've tried that in the past It usually fails without some kind of smelting the spring into place. And on the other hand many of the spring metals bend to the point of failing to hold tension. But that's been my experience. It saves me allot of time to just have the customer hunt down a different lock body. It makes them happy and it saves me money and time. You would be surprised how they feel about going to Architectural Antiques to get the part. Rarely they do not have the part for them.
@@fasteddyskeysexpress That would be nice but we don't have one here in town. the closest one is an hour to an hour half away. and most of the customers that have the old locks here are as old as the locks. LOL But so far I have had good luke with the flate spring steel. I may have to take a trip to the big city and see what they have.
I truly believe in your scenario I think I would end up converting their old locks into newer styles simply to save me the warranty trip back to their house. As far as springs go You might have better spring metal down there than we do. That's possible! It blew my mind on how many of them failed on me when I used to replace springs.
@@fasteddyskeysexpress Sometimes I can talk them into it but for the most part they want to keep the old ones just because thats what they 've had for so long or it's one of those historical homes that have to be the same. But it's all good I like the old stuff. We have alot of old lever locks that take Bit keys still in service around here also.
Yep! I get it! We have tons of old homes here. But we have 3 huge Antique stores. That helps! But historically as time moves on these old products are disappearing.
Yeah, that’s definitely an unusual sight. They probably saved a bit on the installation but then they had to pay you to come and fix it, so they didn’t really save at all, and they ended up a lot less secure than if a locksmith had installed an Adams Rite to begin with. Like you said, customer gets what they asked for, and you did great work in this situation 👏
Thank you very much. It defiantly was a mess.
Great work Eddy, as always. Thin door but definitely a needed upgrade, like you said the customer always gets what they ask for. Thanks for sharing it!
Thanks 👍
A cylindrical lock in a narrow stile door is rare but more intuitive to users than an Adams Rite pull paddle.
Yes I'm sure on the surface city inspectors are happy with this jerry rigged application. The part that bothers me is the rose closest to the glass is not flush with the door. The trim drops a bit! Criminals may think they can pry on it with a large screw driver or crow bar. If there ways one or two MS bolts on this door it might be a lot safer. I am sure some one will be embolden and try to break in at some point on this property. I will be back at this job site I am sure of that.
Very Nice Job Ed. I Hope You Have A Great And Locksmithfull Profit Day ! 👍🔐 The Famous A1 Drill Jig And Company Are Long Gone But Framon Manufacturing Makes A Look alike Now. It's Not Cheap Though.
Thank you Stephen I will be keeping in mind the Framon jig. Mine is on its last leg.
Awesome ! Mr. Mann I Hope You Are Well. Stay Safe Stay Prepared.
Stephen thank you and I hope you have a great locksmith kind of week.
Just bought mine this morning!
Have you ever picked a lock before?
@@fasteddyskeysexpress yes I started my own locksmith company last year
Well then you will like this pick gun. It rarely breaks a pick tip.
What city and state is this?
Minneapolis MN.
What kind of jig is that sir
It is a A1 but its no longer available. Believe it or not Kwikset makes a good one.
Thanks man I appreciate it bro
You are welcomed
Wish MN would get more locksmiths, I used to go there but wont anymore because of what the state has turned into. Get calls everyday wanting me to work in MN.
well I wish you luck
Probably one of the greatest inventions. Looks inexpensive. Fixes doors quickly. Surprised when you said it's been around for 15 years. Pardon but what is a continuous hinge? Liked & Subscribed.

I have the major brand tool for this type of application. Works fast and so simple to use
What would the model number be?
To all locksmiths. Look up Next insurance for your liability insurance. I pay $25 a month for 1 million and 2 million aggregate. My buddy went from $36 a month and got a notice it was going up to $85 a month. He signed up with them and is now paying $25 a month. This isn’t a sales pitch. Just a little hook up
I’m in Aspen Colorado area, I get 28.50 - 38.50 a cylinder
I can see that. Inflation has me thinking about raising my prices again.
It is not very common at all to need to be connected to the internet for an AKL or duplicate transponder programming to communicate with the immobilizer. I’ve seen some Nissans require it, if I recall correctly, and maybe Promasters and possibly some VW/Audis. However it’s like, at least in my area, 0.5% of the vehicles I am hired to work with. Unless the process includes acquiring a keycode, need internet for that but most of the time not for programming. I do the newest of vehicles with a SmartPro and will be acquiring an XHorse.
Its seems here in Minneapolis we have to spend tokens online for codes and programming almost every time. I would say our #1 request for keys is Audi/VW's. But we do use Lishi tools once in a while.
@fasteddyskeysexpress i use the tokens from Advanced Diagnostics but I pay per 25 tokens rather than the subscription because it's cheaper for me since I'm not only an automotive security specialist. If it's a subscription service token program that may be why it would have to be connected. I've never used that side of the system
I understand
Thank so much ❤
I am happy it worked for you! But keep in mind the prohblem is not going away! It will happen again! And if you wait to long to repair or replace the lock! There is a possibility that the key will never come out again. Either replace the lock or have a locksmith look at it! Good luck.
I’m up here in Toronto Canada and my boss charges $125Cad for trip charge and that covers the first half hour labour. Each half hour after the first is 45$. Rekey is 20$ per cylinder for standard rekey and 25$ for master pinning. 3$ per key for the standard schlage/weiser/kwikset key duplication. And then of course parts.
Interesting! And I can understand why! Toronto is a Huge city! And only committed customers will schedule I guess. My pricing comes from many locksmiths that have come and gone in my territory! But posting pricing that pays me more for taking my time is to constraining! I think our pricing in the end totals them same number of dollars as your company! But my pricing allows me to service ay least 2 extra job locations per van per day than you bosses company! At least I think so. I have to keep the FAST in Fast Eddys to keep up my reputation. LOL!
I know, I ran into the same issue...with the same lockset and maybe even the same finish a few month back...think I found it on that demon of all website with their own delivery drivers in grey vans...but I got it next day.
Amazon?
Great work on your videos Eddy. Its been a while since I've checked in and WOW great job!
Thank you very much.
Whats the tool you used?
The yellow tool is a roto. It lathe's the metal on the door. The blue tool on the door is a template which acts as a template that guilds the roto. I use them to cut prefect holes on the door. For a mortise lock made by Adams Rite Mfg.
@fasteddyskeysexpress thank you so much

Ok. Whats your opinion of Graffunder safes? Was looking at one of their Castle models. @fasteddyskeysexpress
Well I never have had the privilege to see one in person or work on one. But looking at the photos they have some really nice gun safes and I like their Iron works safes. But I'm not seeing any commercial style safes for banks or jewelry stores.
