There’s a song named “Spooky Scary Skeletons” which was supposedly sung by a man named Andrew Gold and released in 1996 - 28 years ago. I’m guessing it to be a rehash of this song. Fun fact (Well, not very fun…), this Andrew Gold guy has been dead for 13 years (died 2011) due to heart failure. He was only 59… But I guess he either had the wrong genes or had his own demons to deal with. Turns out the song that man sang dates to a far earlier musical short which Walt Disney himself had a hand in creating - in 1929! That’s 94 years ago, meaning the original version of this song will become public domain in the United States at the beginning of next year. (Those damned copyright laws need reform… But will it happen? No no no! Copyrights with a lifespan of 95 years? Are you kidding me? The world changes too quickly for that to ever work now. Maybe a better idea would be to say that if it’s a corporate-owned work it will last 25 years from when it was purchased and/or created until there’s nothing they can do on the legal side about any attempts to duplicate or pirate it. And if it’s from an individual creator (Not tied to any company), it can stay in their hands until their death, whenever that may be. Just an idea…)

A couple of clarifications are in order 1 this was actually released (other than the song) in 1937. While yes Ub Iwerks was involved in both shorts, this was done at his studio for Columbia not at Disney. 2 there was no three strip technicolor shorts in 1929 but Iwerks and Lantz would do an two strip animation projects an short time later separately that is. Finally 3 despite Iwerks involvement you can tell which short of the two was better from an story and technical side and it's not this one. This short was called Skeleton Frolic. Though why someone added an song decades later in this short is anyone's guess.

Believe it or not, three of those Spooky Scary Skeletons are Walt Disney, Ub Iwerks, and Carl Stalling. They worked on this all the way back in 1929, and here we are, 95 years later, in 2024.
