  • @Kevin-ht1ox

A dam is a lot better than buying natural gas from Russia. Instead of paying money to dismantle something that generates clean energy, how about they manage the water better or build fish ladders if you're worried about the fish. I am an environmentalist but I can also think ahead a couple of years and hypothesize where that electricity is going to be realistically generated from 5 years out: burning fossil fuels. Worried about the fish and water management? Build a modern nuclear reactor and store the biproducts because they are still a source of energy -- we just haven't developed the technology to utilize it yet. Spent nuclear fuel is not "waste", it's an asset that takes up an enormously miniscule amount of space for storage. Unfortunately, the clowns pushing dam removals are science illiterate and too naive to understand the harm they cause because they believe they mean well. Imagine believing that your actions were virtuous because emotionally you believed you had good intentions but were simultaneously incapable of understanding and measuring the impact of your decisions. That's about 95% of the humans alive today and this is effectively what is happening when someone removes a dam instead of adapting it to address environmental concerns.

@Kevin-ht1ox how many megatons of CO2 are released as that dammed up water warms. And you should really visit a water turbine discharge. Only water enters the turbine, but if the discharge is submerged, it frothy and boils with all of the gasses that were entrained in the water. If you visit an above water discharge, the pipe is running about half full of water, and there is a steady rush of gasses out of the top of the pipe. If you are downwind and have a 4 gas analyzers, you will get constant low O2 warnings! Less than 16 percent O2. If you do the math that is 50,000 PPM CO2!
