    The mere fact that you're not raising your voice and we can hear you is all you need to know. No one is going to be right on top of their generator, which is why sound checks are usually done from 21 feet away. The neighbors won't even know this generator is running and with the windows closed, the owner will hear at most, a slight rumble and it will quickly become background noise and forgotten.

    Hey buddy, licensed master electrician here. I have to admit, it’s been years since I’ve done an automatic standby generator. And I can likely count on one hand how many I have done. I’m working on quote and was wondering, what kind of cable would you recommend for a 26kw generator? What causes the fuses to blow to begin with when wiring? Just curious for my understanding. About to install two of these on my new build. Thanks in advance.

    • @ipowergenerators4200
      @ipowergenerators4200 Před měsícem

      when your wiring up the ATS, typically you want to get power back on inside the building, so you wire up the line voltage coming from the utility to the transfer mechanism or breaker (depending on your switch)...once you do that, there will be power at N1, N2 and T1 to the board in the ATS. Then if you run you connect your control wires, the other end of the wire will be hot ... so in process of connecting everything you can easily ground the hot causing the fuses to blow. If you disconnect the molex plug you remove the "hot" from the board ... effective making it better to run the wires. The fuses in the board at the ATS are not easily sourced locally .... at least not where we are. Hope this makes sense ... i know its a little confusing.

      @@ipowergenerators4200 Generac gets an arm and leg for those fuses. We sourced them through Amazon in bags of 50 and gave each tech a few to keep on the truck. Two thoughts come to mind.... First is that Thermostat wire insulation is for Low Voltage, and shouldn't be in the same enclosure as conductors with high voltage. Use wire rated for 600V like the service conductors are, such as 600V MTW. Second, interupting the command for the Condensor, doesn't stop the Air Handler from requesting Cooling. Instead interupt the Cooling request between the Thermostat and the Air Handler. BTW, the Transfer Switch won't shut down the AC unless it is determined that the Generator is excessively loaded.

    You seem to be the man who can help me. I have a 20kw (about 14 years old) and two transfer switches. I am in Florida. When the power fails, the generator starts up and after a few seconds, activates the transfer. Only 1 switch activates. The other box of the xfer needs just the slightest tap, and the solenoid engages. Two different companies have come out and replaced a small control relay (clear cube). It doesn't fix the problem. Have you got any ideas? Nothing obviously wrong. Thanks for your advice!

      Really appreciate the compliment. We’ve seen this problem from time to time. The issue is with the springs in the transfer mechanism or the transfer coil magnetic loosing its ‘magnetic magic’. The transfer coil is an electro magnetic, when it gets 120vac from the transfer relay (obviously that wasn’t the problem) it energizes and pulls in a cylinder which switches power. Check the limit switches, transfer coil, springs in the transfer mechanism and cylinder for any binding or resistance. The last one is not likely but worth checking. If you in the Jacksonville area reach out to Premier Power Systems.

      Thanks for the reply! I wish your company was in Boca Raton. You have shown me more consideration than the "R" company I have been paying thousands to for repair of this same problem every few years. THANKS again! @@ipowergenerators4200

    Thanks for the helpful video. Im pretty sure just the stepper motor for the throttle is bad on mine since the valve is stuck open. Do you have a video on removing the stepper from the mixer assembly? It almost looks like its pressed fit into the throttle control arm.

    • @ipowergenerators4200
      @ipowergenerators4200 Před 5 měsíci

      Unfortunately… the stepper is not a serviceable part, you can’t purchase it separately and yes they are pressed together. If the stepper goes bad you have to replace the assembly… can you move the stepper by hand? You have to check continuity of the stepper wires

    impressive job on the xfr by electrician, can post the rest of service and generator work?

    • @ipowergenerators4200
      @ipowergenerators4200 Před 5 měsíci

      Unfortunately, I probably won’t be back there to take video of the rest of the work. Our service techs typically take care of the units after the start up.

    Had to replace one on a nexus. The internal butterfly choke snapped off the stepper motor connection so it’d throw an over crank being fully closed then throw an over speed when it’d fall open. Threw me for a loop.

      The good old pinkie finger in the intake throat test … it’s more common than it should be…unfortunately. When you removed the mixer did you use silicon to lube the o-rings.

    Do you know if that transfer switch will make when the grid is off if I am using the 2 wire start kit instead of voltage sensing start? I’m trying to 2 wire start a generator with a battery backup inverter only when batteries are low.

    • @ipowergenerators4200
      @ipowergenerators4200 Před 6 měsíci

      The transfer switch can function off a 2 wire start signal but you have to program the generator to send the signal once it’s told to by the inverter… we’ve done this with Xantrex inverters use their gen start module. The important thing is in the board at the generator and wiring it in the correct pins at the board.

      @@ipowergenerators4200 it looks like I need the generac 2 wire start kit as well. Is that right? Where can I find documentation about this. Is it in a manual? Do you have to be generac certified? Can I hire you for consulting?

      I’ll take a look at the kit tomorrow, but from what I remember it’s nothing more than 16g wires with molex pins on the end. We’ve seen guys cut wires and wire nut the splices…. Not the prettiest but it works. You don’t have to an authorized service dealer to do this … just helps in sourcing the parts needed. If you send me an email I can send you docs that I have. My email is in the about me section on the channel. Just reference CZcams.

      Yes this is it… generac calls it remote start but it’s 2 wire start … make sure you change it in the board
