As someone with whippet experience and currently have one with severe SA... I personally believe the males are more prone to it. If you have a puppy who's showing signs of SA... Try all the suggestions that you'll find on the internet. If you have no success in a year or more, look into prozac or another SSRI drug. The reason being... The level of anxiety that creates SA can also eventually create other issues. My SA dog eventually came down with a severe sound phobia, where he shook and panted off and on all day with every noise he heard. It took over a year to get him remotely back to normal. But when using an SSRI drug like Prozac, just keep in mind... They may get worse before they get better. It can take 2-3 months to go through the loading period, before you can see positive results. During that time, it is crucial that they receive the drug in a perfectly uniform amount. Going up or down will prevent the loading period from finishing and it won't work. Different generic brands can also change the effect. Stick with the same brand and amount. Diet can also have an effect. Keep fiber level at the same amount and don't use probiotics. When carefully administered, a drug like prozac can be a life saver. But be prepared to see them looking pretty bad during that loading period. Paranoia and appetite loss can be severe.

Yes they are exceptionally loyal.

They are wonderful companion dogs but you're right they are not people pleasers meaning they are a bit hard to obedience train not like some other breeds sight hounds can be a bit stubborn when it comes to learning multiple commands. They have a more independent personality but I've had 3 and each one was a fabulous dog if you have the time they are trainable in obedience and agility but it does take a lot of time and patience.
