Good thing - if your tank is newly set up you literally have to do nothing . The beneficial bacteria will develop on its own over time and eat the harmful ones , therefore making your water clear again .

Bare bottom is better (Unless you have plants or fish that need substrate) because you can keep the aquarium cleaner, BUT there is reduced sueface area for biological filteation. I would use a sump with an equivilent amount of bio media and this is better because all of the water passes through it.

i learned a lot; thank you. I feel bad because i've had 5 killi lamp eye's , 3 guppy's,, die qithing 2 weeks.... this does not make me feel good. I wish I would have been told that oxygen is important for the survival of the fish when I first bought the fish.

The paradise fish is probably the easiest. It is essentially a cold-water betta.

There are actual formulae for calculating this. First, fish weight must not exceed 1/1000 of the weight of the water. So, for example, you can keep a goldfish in a 30 l tank, but only if its weight is less than 30 g. With different species and breeds the proportion between the length and the weight may be different. For koi (and I assume for long-bodied goldfish too) the weight is estimates as length x length x length / 100 x by 1.8. It is the last figure that differs among different fish. So, for example, a 10 cm koi will weigh 10x10x10/100x1.8=1000/100x1.8=10x1.8=18 g. So, you can keep a 10 cm goldfish in a 30 l aquarium, but if you care for it properly.
