      Yup - I stand corrected - at 13:08 one can see the freehub splines - looks like a campy freehub (for old, Exa-Drive 9-speed Campagnolo cassettes). I'll see the owner on Thursday (unless something unexpected happens) and I hope he remembers what groupset he had (he has a newer bike now, but he rode that one for years until relatively recently). So f (front gears) and r (rear gears). So for 3Fx6R 1F to 1R or 2R 2F to 3R or 4R 3F to 5R or 6R Is that correct?

    • @BikeGremlinUS
      @BikeGremlinUS Před dnem

      You usually can cobine about half of the cassette sprockets with one front chainring. So it would be more like: 1F 1R ~ 3R 2F to 2R ~ 4R 3F to 3R ~ 6R There is overlap, especially with a triple - and that's good.

  • @censorshipBS
    @censorshipBS Před 2 dny

    I was always told to use the front small chain ring with the largest gears on the rear cassette and then if i was using the large front to then use the smaller rear cassette rings that way the chain stays straight ❤

  • @censorshipBS
    @censorshipBS Před 2 dny

    Cant you just use your eyes to look down the chain line to see if its in the correct place?

    • @BikeGremlinUS
      @BikeGremlinUS Před dnem

      If the rear chainstays were parallel to the bike's centre-line, that could work OK(ish). Since they aren't, you can only reliably tell if the chainline is waaay off or not, but you can't tell if it's "only" 2-4 mm off. Combined with short chainstays on most modern bikes, that's still enough to make the chain rub or drop more easily (and get more component wear) in certain gear combinations. Now, a steel rod or a ruler that's not flexible - that works better than just eyeballing it, at least when you get the chain and the front derailleur out of the way. Relja

    Saddle clamps generally allow saddles to either be adjusted in small increments of say 2° or have a infinitely variable adjustment within a limited range ( depending on model ) . The model of saddle can also limit the usable angle range. I have an Ergon SR Comp that I can tilt 8° nose downwards and I don't feel like I am sliding forward ( quite a hard saddle with a 'grippy' surface ). I also have a Specialized Bridge Comp with MIMIC but a >4° nose down tilt makes me slide forward. You rarely get reviews that tell you things like this. Your weight as well as your sit bone shape affects how much a saddle deforms and thus the tilt required.

    Hi all could you please give me some advice. My two wheels spoke lengths are 284.5 / 282.9 and 284.4 / 285.5 what lengths should I get slightly longer or slightly shorter? Thanks.

    • @BikeGremlinUS
      @BikeGremlinUS Před 3 dny

      Hi, The optimal spoke length depends on how you calculate it (some calculators require rounding up, some to the closest size etc.), and the spoke thickness (some calculators take that into account - that the thinner spokes may elongate more under tension). So, very generally speaking: 1st wheel: I'd go with 284 / 282 for even, or 285 / 283 for odd spoke lengths (making sure there is a 2 mm difference in length). 2nd wheel: 284 / 286 for even, or 285 / 287 for even sized spoke lengths. Hello, Relja! I am a big fan of Selle SMP 🥰 And from my own experience, I can say that the option you showed may work well on a model, for example, VT30c. But on the model, for example, TRK, the nose of the saddle almost always needs to be lowered down from the horizontal position.

    • @BikeGremlinUS
      @BikeGremlinUS Před 3 dny

      A very good point (pinned the comment). Yes, for some "exotic" saddle designs, the setup is different. The angle may also differ to a degree (pun intended) based on personal preferences and other bicycle fit setting (TT vs endurance setup, for example). The level parallel system shown in the video is generally a good starting point for any further fine tuning. For example: I see way too many flat saddles angled down and people complaining about the wrist and neck pains while riding. Setting the saddle to be horizontal solves those problems in most cases. Relja

  • @thankmelater1254
    @thankmelater1254 Před 3 dny

    With the curve in the seat, is level good or bad? The curve can exert a slide forward or backward influence, depending on other things. I bought my ebike in a slightly smaller frame so I could use my feet off the pedals to skim over ice and snow like canoe outriggers and if the bike slides out fast from under me on ice or ice under the snow, I can just let the bike go its way and be left standing up. That shortness in length makes seating not optimal because handlebars are a bit too close. It's all trade offs :)

    • @BikeGremlinUS
      @BikeGremlinUS Před 3 dny

      See the pinned comment (and my reply) for the curved saddle tilt. Regarding the saddle height - it is set relative to the bottom bracket height, not the bicycle's size. I.e. many modern bikes are built with high bottom brackets and they don't allow you to reach the ground from the saddle easily (unless you set the saddle too low, in which case it's not optimal for pedalling and puts more stress on the knees). I understand you've made a compromise for justified reasons, and that e-bikes with low bottom brackets are not easy to find. Aging derailleur hangers made of aluminum can be returned to new condition (once carefully straightened) by carefully heating enough for any work hardening to be relaxed, without heating so much that the metal flows or slumps. Standard engineering tables offer temp ranges for most metals. This won't fix cracks, but may help remaining metal soften enough so any cracks don't spread as fast. Talented welders can fix cracks, though reshaping where any weld metal affects function is filed or ground back to original hanger shape. My treasured MTB is just over 20 years old, and a new hanger probably won't be found.

    • @BikeGremlinUS
      @BikeGremlinUS Před 3 dny

      New hangers are a problem even for new(er) bikes. It's crazy - the amount of needless slight differences that manufacturers make even between their own models, just enough to make it not fit - not enough to make any reasonable technical difference. Relja

    The reason we have front and back gears is not to achieve so many speeds. Rather it is for ease of shifting. When you come across sudden uphill or downhill you immediately shift the front gears to achieve quick shift. When you are having steady slope you use back gears to shift steadily and slowly over the path.

      Internal gear hubs have their pros and cons (I might make a video on that). I think that cons outweigh the pros for many use cases. They make sense for riding in deep freezing temperatures (when external derailleurs and cables more easily freeze up - like -10 and colder, with a lot of snow). But they are complicated, and make wheel replacement (for patching tyres and similar) more of a hassle - and are arguably more tricky to service. @@BikeGremlinUS I'm not an electrician so it seems wrong of me to start such a talk. I did log in to your forum to see if you had created a video topic and there was no direct link from YT like you did with waxing which will also discourage use of your forum. All I was going to say is that LiFePO4 batteries are far better in terms of lifetime and safety than the Li-ion ones with Cobalt and Fluorine in them. I had a smoking and rather hot bike light and since the manufacturers go for high power density and low cost, and from the noxious fumes it was likely to be one of the cobalt ones. I got it replaced under warranty so did not open it up as the manufacturer wanted it back ! This is one advantage that Dynamo lights have in that they won't set on fire. If I ever try to replace the batteries on the replacement light, I will probably have to use the same ' unsafe ' chemistry because the internal circuitry likely won't handle the lower open circuit voltage of LiFePO4. For laptops, being able to set battery threshold limits is useful. For my thinkpads, under linux I use the tlp package and you can use tlpui as a GUI . I have no idea if it works with other models of laptop. tlp will also set clockspeed thresholds so you can limit heat output. For high power devices , higher voltage is the way to go for transmission wires since from Ohms law ... V ( voltage) = I ( current ) X R ( Resistance ) and Power P = V ( Voltage ) * I ( current ) , So ... P=I * I * R so if you double the current you get 4 times the resistance and heat !

    You can even tell that the chainrings are completely worn by looking at the teeth! Some of them have a shark fin shape already.

    I had the same problem once. The teeth of the chainrings are completely worn, their worn shape causes the chain to be pulled upwards. I recommend replacing the entire drivetrain, i.e. chainrings, chain and cassette, because if one of these components is worn, the others are probably worn, too. Don't mix new drivetrain components with worn ones, because that will immediately damage the new.

      Replacing all the components is a safe bet. However, a chainring that doesn't skip with a new chain or suck the chain, and a cassette that doesn't skip with a new chain need not be replaced (unless one is planning a really long trip and wants to avoid replacements after a thousand or two thousand kilometres). They won't cause any measurable damage. Relja

    They tell you it's a combination of Robot and Company. But with their prices and business tactics, It might as well be Robbers and Conmen! The Government doesn't want you to know! They're in bed together! Them and all the big companies, like Vault-Tec, Arc Jet, H&H Tools, Poseidon Energy, Chryslus Motors, even the Nuka~Cola! It's all a conspiracy propped up by Galaxy News! They's gonna get us all nuked! Wake up sheeple!

    In short. Never create a hard ass diagonal angle with the chain when shifting gears. Keep chain as close to parallel as possible
