My name is Baron Any relation?
No Sorry Joyce, just a user name, Bert.
Remember these great festivals
pete best is only known know for being booted out of the Beatles and Rory storm and the hurricanes are known now because Ringo Starr left them to join the Beatles.
I did.nt know that, thanks,
Good to see the old Antoria Guitar still gets an outing! Hank Marvin had the same when in the Drifters.
Who's that guy with the big nose on the drums? They gotta get rid of him and maybe they'll have a shot at the big time.
Great doc. They didn't have great songs or enough hits on the charts which is the point. The beatles were not plying their own music in hamburg as I understand. thats not the reason for their success./ It was because of a great song and songs. Good shows are not the same thing as good music. Rory etc are remembered in nOrth america only because of Ringo Star. I know more but not many others.
Johnny Byrne was a really nice guy. After the band broke up he was for a time driving a taxi for Eagle taxis in Liverpool. I remember that I got his taxi from the Cavern one Saturday night, and we discussed at length the Mersey Beat era ~~ Great times!!
David Turchick ~ In reply to your question re the photograph at 7:00. No, the Beatles are not there. They had well left Liverpool by then. Rory Storm and the Hurricanes are roughly in the middle of the photograph which, if memory serves me well was taken early 1964. The photo was organised by Der Stern magazine on Germany. Each person on the photograph received £1 for attending, and it was damn cold that day!
How do I contact John Steelman please?
This is an interesting story.
rory was a liverpool ledgend
I do not know good English, but he speaks with a terrible accent.
Thanks for this exceptionally interesting story!
Beautiful This is History of Music. The Golden Boy is much talked about here in Brazil. Liverpool contributed to a very musical time in the world with this Mersey Beat sound. Only the Beatles became truly famous, and we can see why...The Beatles took Mersey Beat to a new level. They had a certain charisma the others didn't. But Rory had something too. Better than some others from Liverpool that managed to released records to the world. As it was said here, he had the voice and the looks. Golden Boy from Liverpool, we won't forget you! Oh...his sister Iris dated George and Paul...Amazing.
Are the Beatles in that group photo?
No
Great stuff thanks
Loved it, though I wished it were subtitled. That Scouser accent is great, but hard to decipher for us Yanks! :)
Thank you, ,We have the same trouble with some Yanky accents, I will see what I can do about subtitles later
Bloody loved this show, thanks for sharing
Alan Caldwell, aka Al Storm, Jet Storm, and Rory Storm had a great voice! I Can Tell is the best song the group played. His voice was so original yet so rock n roll. It kinda sucks that they never applied their sound to any originally written work. Oh well, they were still Liverpool's best known group after the Beatles and Gerry and the Pacemakers.
Fantastic seeing this! Years ago I was the Cheshire 3000 metres steeplechase champion and Rory was the Lancashire 3000 m steeplechase champ. Fond memories of a great guy! Strangely at this time I am a crooner!
I was in the Manhattans who followed Rory Storm and the hurricanes into Butlins pwllheli in 1963. I met Rory at the camp ,nice guy. He had a stammer which apparently used to clear up the moment he got on stage. Quite a legend ,that man.
Amazing how he looks exactly the same, some loose skin and the huge hair gone, but he looks exactly the same. My granddad saw all these guys when he was stationed in Germany. Even saw the Beatles at the Indra, said he thought they were retarded as they had purple dye all over their hands and one guy kept having spasms which now I realized was John Lennon acting up
Interesting picture at 7:00, anyone have any information on it?? Are the Beatles there?

I first saw Rory and the band along with the Beatles in Hamburg 1960. We would catch a train from Sylt after lunch Sat. afternoon for the 3 &1/2 hour journey to the city, do the clubs all night eat at the fish market early Sun. morning and catch the milk train back to the island. Last time i saw Wally was 1967 at my cousins wedding. Oh what heady times they were.
find out what happened to rory storm, and his mother of rory storm and the hurricanes,
What I've noticed with the whole Merseybeat sound is that The Beatles stood out from the rest. They had an unorthodox and unique sound that was kinda 'left of centre', different from the others. The other bands were probably more commercial and appealed to the majority or common denominator. If you noticed this video the audience are dancing to the band whereas in Beatles gigs the people usually look on and don't dance. Not sure how The Beatles were able to play in dancehalls.
i'am watching this right now with jason bryne, johns son!!!
Johnny Byrne died in 1999 from motor neurone disease.
I only saw this bit because of follow-up research to do with the early rise of the Beatles. I always wondered how a Rory Storm & the Hurricanes would have been like live, though a docu also generously on here, gives a hint of cavern life. But the timeframe 4:41-5:11 sums it up perfectly for me. A certain never-before heard or seen-of vibrancy is there, it seems.Cheers for uploading. T
great story, love the accents
Yes, hznfrst, I am going to try to do something about the bad audio soon,
When Ringo left, me Dad sat in the drummers seat for a few gigs. Sad, they were well respected in Liverpool as being the best Rock N Roll band !!
No`it isn`t Joseph Cotton but the others are Trevor Howard and Jean Simmons and, yes, it is Kenneth Moore, who once appeared at the Grand Theatre in Byker at the early part of his career
dont forget The rock n rolling stones--= we wont...let it be versus let it bleed
dont forget The rock n rolling stones--= we wont
Love the little Antoria guitar..nice vid
Nice, but what is he saying?
Is that Joseph Cotton with a dodgy eastern european accent in Newcastle? & Trevor Howard with a dodgy tash & Kenneth Moore
Nice one Keith, the blues & R&B were the best sounds for the Mojos, Mojo working really jumped out of the radio on sounds of the 60s last month, the records either side of it were good but a bit tame compared to your song. Keep on rocking my man.
its great to see newcastle as it was i remmember the central station when it was like that thanks for posting
I second that about Johnny Guitar. When I made the Rock Family Trees BBC documentary about Merseybeat he couldn't have been more helpful and enthusiastic. He was starting to get ill when he came down to London for the series launch, but his enthusiasm was unstoppable.
Damn long tunnel! (btw, its the only way to travel)
I remember this so well, performing as Rory has been one of my greatest acting roles to date and to be on stage with Johnny Guitar was my pleasure as he was a true Gentleman. R.I.P Gentlemen Carl Wharton
His voice reminds me a bit of of Mick Jagger. Nice vid.
nice job, good work, great post of a nearly forgotten but deeply influential band. Thanks!
hahahaha cool man!
hahahaha cooool man!
