The problem with a lot of these healthcare paths such as being a doctor, dentist, pharmacist, veterinarian, optometrist, physical therapist, etc is that you have to dedicate so much extra schooling compared to undergrads who pursue stuff like engineering, computer science, accounting/finance, etc. And if you make the wrong choice you're pretty much screwed. I think the important question to ask yourself is do you see yourself in healthcare? If you do, then you should pursue something in allied health sciences such as radiology technology, nursing, respiratory therapy, cardiovascular technology, etc which all take considerably less time (2 year associate or 4 year bachelors) and don't require taking out so much loans. Try to focus on what you want out of a career. Is it direct patient contact like nursing? Is it technical procedures such as radiation therapy? Is it more science based lab procedures such as biology or chemistry? This is going to require a lot of introspection on your end and I think just watching a "day in the life" video of a number of professions will help get that spark going for you.

Sorry to hear this, but I can’t disagree, and you made the right call. I want observers to know a few things about this industry. Pharmacist here. Have worked retail, clinical and hospital pharmacy. I’ve worked at Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens. All major retail chains have been sued by and settled with the DOJ for their role in the opioid crisis. To my eyes, all are still engaging in the same behaviors. Walmart was very close to being the first corporation to being criminally charged, for how negligent they were. I’ve traveled to five states for work. At Walmart in Ada, OK, I witnessed, routinely, acute opioid Rx’s being dispensed to patients at a rate of 10, 15, or 20, within a 2-3 month period. Oklahoma law only allows for 2 before you must switch to chronic pain mgt. I passed this information along to OBNDD and the board of pharmacy. To my knowledge, nothing was done at all. I don’t think the public understands the state of retail pharmacy, and pharmacy in general. I am a pharmacist in name only. I was retaliated against for bringing up this, and other serious breaches of law or responsible pharmacy practice. I was alone in standing up. I always am. I let them fire me. Technicians often run the show, or store/district managers, none of whom are pharmacists. The relationship between pharmacist and patient has long been destroyed. I don’t believe in this profession, nor our regulatory bodies ability to regulate it against large, wealthy corporations. This goes for hospitals and clinics as well. Be careful out there. Most docs are mandated 10-15 minutes from start to finish with you, and that’s why they appear sloppy. I sometimes verify 400+ scripts per day alone, and do not consider my work to be responsible or safe. The vast majority of HC professionals are unhealthy as a cohort. The conditions press hard on you to make it so. I am only as athletic and healthy as I am, through sheer effort, being single, making fitness/climbing/endurance sports a central fixture of my life, and being a stubborn, tough SOB who allows no one to steal his health or what brings him joy away from him. No matter what.

There has to be interest and passion in what we do, if it’s not there, it can be hard to stay in that career, it’s difficult without it
