Well, as far as I know, Pepe wanted continuity and it was not decided to renew him (Zidane and Pepe did not reach an agreement). At that time, Varane and Ramos rotated ownership with Pepe. Pepe went to try his luck in Turkey and returned to the place where he was made known internationally, Porto. For many, Zidane did not do well by not renewing it and they thought that Pepe was no longer performing at 35 years old at that time but, now at 39 years old, Pepe shows why he is a starter in his team and in his club (current captain). Still, I think he lacks marketing, of the best defenders of Portugal in history.
