I started with Diablo 2 and am now playing Diablo Immortal since I really can't afford to buy D3 and D4. For me, I love to play the game no matter how it looks or how it works, but because I love to be inside Sanctuary once more and interact with what's going on inside it, like going to places I am familiar with from my stint on D2. I remember playing Diablo 2 not really invested in skill builds but because I was invested in the story itself. I pictured myself as the character I play inside the game. So, in short, as a story-based fan, I will love Diablo in all its forms, no matter how.

Uhmm you are just dead wrong about D1's story. It goes like this. Dark riders, evil occultist came to round up sacrifices for their evil designs. They don't just disappear but continus to capture and kill the townsfolk of Tristram. Eventually the prince is captured. The Archbishop in a desire to plaease his Lord riles up the people to go find the prince. He obviously succumbs to evil posession and actually leads the militia to the presence of the butcher. As the Archbishop does not return King Leoric and his personal retinue and remaining priest go personally to find the prince... So I have no idea where you get contrasting story. remember our hero arrives after all these events take place.
