In the UK, the 1974 ESC is generally regarded as a high quality contest, one of the strongest there has been. It produced four significant UK chart hits, something unprecedented as far as Eurovision was concerned, although the solid quality went much further down the leaderboard than that. I think Dani's song would have been competitive but would have been handicapped by the presence of at least three similar catchy, light-hearted, mid-tempo songs by female soloists, all of which did well, although I think 'La Vie a 25 ans' may have done at least as well as any of them. Abba certainly did not have things all their own way, and had two Scandinavian neighbour juries to thank for over a quarter of their total score! Gigliola Cinquetti, 'Si' was, I think, the pre-contest favourite on the tenth anniversary of her 1964 win.

You are correct, this was Spain’s best song. It was so strange that didn’t come first… even made it to the top ten hits in the USA.

The Spring (I Anixi) If you come to me and dress like the night, If you come to me and hide inside my body, If you come to me and get tangled in my nets, You need to know this, that you will not get betrayed. (x2) Then, it will be like the coming of Spring, Then, it will be like the skies open up, Then, it will be like the coming of Spring... all of a sudden. (x2) (worst sax solo in the history of music) If we are open to the winds, If we are firm in what we live by, If love is what ties us together, If our bodies are like hanging gardens. Then, it will be like the coming of Spring, Then, it will be like the skies open up, Then, it will be like the coming of Spring... all of a sudden (x3)

Sophia happens to be one of my vocal teachers. She has been telling me what happened with the saxophone player: the gentleman who played in the performance just replaced Sophia 's saxophone player who got sick some hours before the performance. Sophia kept herself disciplined and went on singing the unique way she always sings. The song is a love song actually and anixi means spring. I would give it a try to translate the text for you guys, if you like. Lots of love from Germany!❤

Technically there's 'leaf' in sax (also in clarinet and oboe) player probably didn't keep moist enough resulted that ridiculous sound? On the whole the orchestra was unprofessional, cause there were other songs (Finland) it practically destroyed too and sounded terrible and ackward.

Thank you for reacting to such a beautiful song that has stayed one of the most pleasant & strongest French entries at Eurovision Song Contest for years now. As U said Nicole Rieu's voice is angelic & crystal-clear. This artist has kept on singing since then having success in France & French-speaking Europe & Canada until the mid-80's. She stopped for a few years and came back in the 90's but much more discreetly than at her beginnings. Eurovision 1975 was the very first one I watched on TV making find out what this contest was. I skipped the 1976 edition to watch ESC in 1977 again, the year when France won the contest for the last time. I was a child and then a teen when I found out Eurovision. Then, I stopped watching it in 1983 until 1996 & I stopped being interested in it again until 1999. Actually, I'm not deeply interested in ESC because I have noticed with time that the best songs did not win very often & that geopolitics has corrupted the contest through years as never due to the presence of Eastern ex-sovietic countries mostly. Since the 2000's it has become obvious. 2022 has certainly be a top of that downward slide when Ukraine won again. In my opinion, France has no chance to win again for a VERY long time. The country would have to withdraw for a few years to make other participants miss it and then see its come-back with joy making it be seen more positively. Italy that also belongs to the Big-5 group withdrew from 1998 to 2010... and since it came back, this country has got very good rankings most of time.

This is one of the best Eurovision songs and one of the best vocals at the contest ever. The Saxophone player was a last minute replacement due to illness. It sounds as if the reed in his saxophone was not properly prepared or broke while playing . Reeds can crack due to dryness / heat under TV lights. The saxophone part is written right at the highest point of the range of the instrument and so the loss of control over the instrument sounds so obvious. It is a shame as Sophia Vossou deserved to go on to world stardom after a vocal performance like that!

Sure that is not a UK socket there on the wall...just kidding. As for the sax, that is the curse of reed instruments...maybe his reed got dry, but he lost the high notes. And is not hard to loose the high notes and squeak. The same happens with brass instruments, you might be the best and loose notes, unfortunately, sad but true, can happen to everyone!

The original Greek saxo player was ill and didn't travel to Italy, then when the Greek team went to Italy they arranged for an experienced saxo player to fill in for the missing Greek musician. They were rehearsing excellently, everyone was happy with the Italian saxo player, however, that person saw his participation to Eurovision as leverage to ask a raise from RAI (because I think the orchestra was of the national TV of Italy - correct me someone if I am wrong). So, long story short, his blackmail to his employers didn't work and he decided to leave the Greek Eurovision team without a saxo player a couple of days before the event!!! (Talk about a Mafia move there). Anyway, the Italians then scramble to find a replacement sax player and they appoint the old man you see on the video. That guy probably wasn't a good player to begin with and coupled with the lack of proper rehearsals, he completely blundered taking the Greek song down with him.

My partner and I are big lovers of Eurovision, and this song is an amazing example of its time! The girls look the y are having such a great time, especially the one on the right who I think even gives out a little 'whoop' in the Eurovision Final version. I also like the two singers off at the back - they look very much like they might have been teachers or something! As you say if this song doesn't cheer you up then nothing will!

My favorite ESC entry ever 😊 I read an interview with the Greek conductor, Haris Andreadis. He wrote the saxophone solo to the song and all week the rehearsals went well. There was a young saxophone player in the orchestra. Then on Saturday to the conductors big surprise there was a new saxophone player. Apparently the first one had demanded a raise and RAI, the Italian broadcaster let him go.
