The UK's Lake District - 4 Day Hike & Wild Camp - Superb Cloud Inversion!
Join myself and Mark from @trickofthetrail on a 4 day hike & wild camp in the UK's stunning Lake District.
We had a good mix of weather, and we were treated to an epic cloud inversion on our first morning. Along the route we scaled the iconic Great Gable (899m), along with a cold, windy and cloudy Scafell Pike (978m).
Mark was testing out his Bonfus Middus 2P DCF tent, whilst I took my Tarptent Double Rainbow DW Ultra.

    I just bought one of these and have had it on its first multi-day hike. Overall, I'm happy. I'd prefer the hipbelt pockets a shade larger (probably because I'm used to bigger ones on my previous pack), and I agree with your observations about the shoulder strap pockets (and the ejecting bottle!) - I'll see if I can do a fix myself. The side zipper pocket seems pointless, but maybe I'll find a use for it later. The side pockets, however, are brilliant, and their size/construction was what made me buy the Kakwa in preference to an Atom+.

    Well done Paul and Mark. What a beautiful journey! Paul, do you use an actual filter or a digital one to get the high saturation? I used to use a polariser for colour, and a red/orange one for black&white with my film setup. (Film? What's that?) Sorry this comment is months late. I waited until I had time to binge it all at once. It was worth the wait!

    • @PaulandaPack
      @PaulandaPack Před dnem

      Hey, thanks Anne. This was a great trip, if a little chilly at times! I sometimes use a polariser on my drone. The action camera I use (most of the shots where I'm not talking to the camera) has no filters on it. The camera I use for talking to, I usually have ND filters on that. I use an LUT in processing on all the footage, I'd guess that's where the saturation is mostly coming from. I've actually got defective colour vision, like a mild colour-blindness, so I'm sure things look a bit funny sometimes to most people! I'm still learning each time I go out to be honest!

    Definitely a good decision not to continue through the snowfields. One slip and it's over. I've also encountered harder snow a few times in the Alps and always turned around and went back. Your use of the drone was really impressive in making some high-quality content. I was curious about how the SWD pack held up on this trip and what your overall impression of the pack is? Also, any more hikes on tap for you in 2024?

    • @PaulandaPack
      @PaulandaPack Před 23 dny

      Awesome, thank you! The drone had a close call with a Vulture on it's first flight on that trip! I was more careful using it after that, but it was such awesome hike, thank you for watching! I absolutely love my SWD pack. The only issue I've had was my own fault for not using a pack liner. As the bag isn't seam sealed, everything inside got wet during a day long rain storm. I've now sealed it myself, and gone back to using a pack liner too, so problem solved. I find it extremely comfortable, and it carries really well. There's a bit of de-lamination of the Ultra material happening now, especially on the roll-top area, but there's no holes or tears anywhere, and I've not been all that careful with it either! It must have over 1,000 miles on it now. In a week or so I'll be heading out for a few weeks across the Yorkshire Dales on the Dales High Way, then moving on into the Lake District for a loop around that if all goes according to plan. I've almost used all my holidays up for this year, so am a little restricted to what I can do now!

    Isn't there a grommet to insert the tip of your trekking pole underneath the edges of the carbon arch pole? So the trekking pole is upside down? I thought this was the case for the 'standard' (non-ultra) Rainbow. It would seem stupid if they removed this feature for the ultra version.

    Hey! This is really a good report from practice - that's how it should be! The noise and feel of the material somehow reminds me of my GG The One (first generation) made of Spinnaker from many years ago. Silnylon is much more pleasant, but since my Rainbow was pretty worn out after 13 years and the Rainbow Li is finally available again, I ordered it. I hope that the Cuben Fiber isn't as loud as the Ultra TNT or Spinnaker. The Cuben floor is no longer available in the new Rainbow Li, but it is now made of 15D nylon. I have my concerns about the durability because I once had a Big Sky Mirage with a floor made of 15D nylon, which didn't last long and let water through pretty quickly. I didn't use a groundsheet, though, but the 30 D floor of my "normal" Rainbow held up for many years without getting holes. For some time now I've been using a groundsheet made of Tyvek, which makes the floor last longer and it doesn't weigh too much. But even so, and even though the Rainbow Li is no longer available with a Cuben Fiber floor - what bothered you about it and how is the 20D floor of your Double Rainbow DW ULTRA doing so far? Many thanks and greetings from Germany, Matthias

    • @PaulandaPack
      @PaulandaPack Před měsícem

      Hi Matthias, thanks for watching! I found the DCF floor of the Rainbow Li to be quite slippery. I also managed to puncture it on my first night out. My own fault for not checking the ground fully, I didn't expect a small rounded root would puncture the DCF, but it did. I find the Ultra TNT to be louder than DCF, in rain and wind. The floor of my DW Ultra Rainbow is doing great. I had it in a 12 hour rainstorm in France where water was pooling around the tent and it had no problem.

    Excellent review matey, really detailed and will give people are great idea if this tent is for them. I think it's an excellent tent and am always a bit jealous when we're on a camp and you bring this bad boy along. I love the space you get inside and the seemingly taught pitch every time. The porch mode is also cool. As with any tent there are always compromises I guess and depends on individual needs. If they made a doubled walled DCF version with a solid inner, I really might be tempted. 👍

    Nice video. I have only 2 nights on mine. Agree with the combined inner/fly setup difficulty. I found it easier if I did not connect the inner and fly at the midpoint on the main pole until after setup. For the crosspole- you can put the cross pole inside the fly. I feel this preloads the pole better and prevents pointloading it on the mainpole. Am considering cutting down an extra AL pole to replace it. For the slipping tensioners- its tough with non-stretch flys. On the Xmid- tell your buddy to replace the Lawson line with slightly thicker Kelty Triptease. Still non-stretch, holds FAR better and shows up better on the guylines due to being gold instead of black. For the Tarptent, use a high grit sandpaper foam block and lightly sand the webbing on the side where the buckle grips. It will increase the friction considerably. I really wish the doors were symetrical instead of offset. And Ithink magnetic door holders create more problems than they solve. Hated the Xmids holders and very much dislike them on the Tarptent. Overall a really nice tent.

      Hey, thanks for watching. I'd not considered putting the crossing pole on the inside - didn't think it would make much difference but I'll give it a try next time. Great tips on the slipping tensioners - thank you!

    LOVED THIS VIDEO! Been waiting for your review. A few questions... Is the fly color more blueish or greenish color? (It's hard to really tell in pictures/ videos) Also can you tell me a bit more about what you mean by attaching a "close peg" for the door? Never heard of that before. Lastly, do you think this would work well for snowy/windy conditions? Thank you for this review!

    • @PaulandaPack
      @PaulandaPack Před měsícem

      Hey, thanks! Glad that you enjoyed it. I'd say the fly definitely has a greenish tinge to it. It looks quite bright in the video but is actually a little duller than that. It seems to get a bit brighter in the sun. The 'close peg' is probably my Yorkshire accent lol, it's actually a clothes peg, or clothes pin, used for hanging washing out to dry! I'm still undecided on the wind situation with this one. A few people have already suggested a few things to try to make it a bit sturdier. One would be putting the crossing pole on the inside, instead of the outside, and there's also the possibility of running a line from the tie-outs on the pole, down to the door stake, making a 'V' pattern on each side with the line. It obstructs the doors, but apparently people have had success doing that on their DCF versions. As for snow loading, I couldn't really say. The Ultra material seems pretty 'slippy' and I'd imagine that anything less than a very heavy dumping of snow would simply find it hard to settle on the walls or the roof. You can tension the outer right down to the ground too, so minimal problems from spindrift blowing in. The fabric panels around the bottom of the inner would also help with this, but bear in mind that about 3/4 of the inner is mesh. I'd probably be happy using it in Spring and Autumn, but I think Winter would be pushing it for me. Ryan has a great review of the DCF version here czcams.com/video/4k5T6YZu2V8/video.html he talks about snow loading from about 18:20 onwards, but the whole video is worth a watch if you've not seen it.

    I was wondering if you considered doing the alternative (nueva variante) which skips the descent to Banos de Panticosa (and subsequent ascent) which splits from the main route at Refugio de los Ibones de Bachimana? I am considering that alternative in planning my GR11 attempt next summer.
