Towels, hexi stove and version of foot powder still being issued in the early to mid 80s. Don’t remember the jocks or that version of water purification being issued. Do you have a “Bot Spoon” or “FRED” in your collection? Get hold of a CR1M basically the same today as it was in the 80s and late 70s still contains a FRED, canned cheese, Vegemite and everyone’s favourite a tube of sweetened condensed milk. BTW the hexi tablets stank and the smell was transferred into everything you carried in your Nam and Bum packs.

...and those boxers (at Kapooka [Basic Training]) had to be ironed starched and neatly folded. Never used after "the K-Place"... apparently good for polishing cars with. We often cut the towel in half, if living out of a pack. Good vid, bloke!

Do you remember “Draws Dracula” underpants with their drawstrings? They looked horrible, but were excellent at keeping your balls well ventilated on long marches. I like the '82 Pattern webbing. I wore mine in Afghanistan rather than take the Load Carrying Vest because I could better carry my spare mags - I added two more magazine pouches so that I could carry 8 mags, kept one in my rifle and had my tracers in a single pouch mounted on the butt of my rifle for a total of 10 mags. The vest, which has been the subject of numerous Technical Failure Reports, could only hold four and the rest had to be stuffed into the utility pouch, so you'd wear the extra LMG boxes by the bandoliers or carry them in your patrol pack. The '82 Pattern webbing was a much more ergonomic and modular design. The webbing was great on its own, but adding the rucksack seriously checked your vibe. The webbing's shoulder straps were thick, so the rucksack's shoulder straps slid all over the place when you were marching. The sleeping bag valise also sat too low and bounced off the small pack at the rear of the webbing and strained your shoulders with each step. There was also no happy way to fasten the waist belt of the rucksack. You would have to hike it over your mag pouches, but unless you were 7' tall, the rucksack was too low and the belt pulled down on your webbing. The rucksack really was the weak link in that system. They should have designed it to fasten directly to the webbing using the quick release the rucks had to drop them for fighting or battle order. Then, with the valise on top, where the jump rucks had them rather than underneath, they would have fixed the poor ergonomics and had a relatively squared away load carriage system.

  • @mh53j

Found them on eBay a few years back for about $10 for both! The large format and the pictures have been invaluable for me in building my Falklands era models. There are many pictures that haven't been published before. The aerial view of the "Red and Green Life Machine" actually shows several Land Rovers parked about...as well as a 1-ton ambulance leaving the adjacent helo pad with with an HC-4 that had just delivered casualties; may make a diorama of that! I didn't get the map; I did get it separately from another source shortly after it was printed. Definitely worth getting if you can find them. Last week I got a practically new copy (still with undamaged dust jacket) The Falklands Then and Now , edited by Gordon Ramsey. It is absolutely phenomenal; many color pictures taken by the participants and the 'story' of the campaign is actually a compilation of stories by the participants themselves.... Argentine, British and even the civilians. Another "must have" for Falklands War students. I do like you recommending reference materials on the subject of uniforms, etc. Being in the States, I'm not aware of some of these.

There were indeed numerous previous versions. At least three issues in fact. The third issue of these was printed in 1982. They are very rare now. It was the same size and a similar format as 'Survive to Fight' with a lot of the same content. It did not have a plastic cover though. It was called - NBC Survival Task Book.

U.S. M1917 helmets (many made using British metal "shells) have a leather chin strap with the liner riveted in on top. I noticed Your MkII has a filister screw head showing on the top, and this later manner of mounting the liner was used with the new aluminum liners on the American M1917A1. Do you know if British helmet liners were always held in place with a screw, or was a rivet used randomly?

I had US jungle boots in Belize 83. Very good boots. The drainage holes tended to clog up and retain the water in the boot, best just to prise the little round grills out and just have the 2 holes. Yes water got in but it also now got out.

Thanks for the video. My father gave me an Army helmet in the mid 70s that was scrap which he said might have been an airborne but thanks to your the hole in the top means it wasn’t. I can’t remember now what the steel helmets in the 80s were like and no doubt there have been various iterations since.

My grandfather took part in this operation. He was an RSM in The Black Watch and was flown into a jungle airstrip named Aberdeen, and survived. 1945 saw the end of his 25 years service in the British Army, having signed up as a 16 year old in 1920. He served in North Africa, in the defence and subsequent evacuation of Crete and the relief and breakout of Tobruk, before being sent to Burma.

Hi, I can’t think of any equipment issued to us that had such minute usage as this helmet! We tried not to put it on until the last moment on embarking and it was the first bit of kit to be taken off on landing and in most cases it took precedence to having a slash. The knot in the liner cord always dug into your scalp and in spite of any padding it was always uncomfortable, heavy and could have been so much better designed had the treasury allowed the funds to be available. When serving in the Middle East we would repaint the helmets in a sandy colour and add a sprinkling of fine sand over the helmet when wet with paint. This would give a sandpaper effect allover and add a bit more weight. The daily fatigue dress in those desert for us was a beret, PT shorts and boots, no wonder most of us got skin cancer in our old age if we ever survived that long. Cheers mate Harera
