The Future of Urban America
zhlédnutí 162Před dnem
Empty office buildings. Workforce changes allow for more remote work. American downtowns are struggling. The pandemic-led changes in where and how we work and live have weakened and withered many urban cores. The office vacancy rate in Houston is some 26 percent; in Phoenix it is above 20 percent. This shift means fewer workers, fewer businesses to serve them, less tax revenue, and hollowed-out...
Talking Revolution, with Nathan Perl-Rosenthal
zhlédnutí 90Před měsícem
There is broad scholarly agreement that our current political world owes much to what Thomas Paine was the first to call the "age of revolutions"-that is, the several late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century decades during which revolutions rocked the globe. But what gave rise to the age of revolutions? Why, suddenly, were era-spanning monarchies being toppled? Were revolutionaries motivat...
What's the Deal with the Electoral College?
zhlédnutí 135Před 2 měsíci
Perhaps no extant product of the U.S. Constitution has received more bipartisan animus than the Electoral College. Since 1800 there have been more than 700 proposals introduced in Congress to amend or eliminate the way in which America chooses its presidents. Yet the Electoral College lives on. Why do we have this system? Why does it inspire such cross-party antipathy? Can it be changed should ...

3:05 Racism is a worldwide phenomenon. There are varieties of racism. The most common symptom of racism is narcissism. In fact, racism and egoism are interlinked. Another symptom of racism is superiority complex. Racism is a mental disorder. It can be treated, but before that it must be declared as a disorder. Failure to do that is harmful to society and human development.
It was our good fortune to have her as a Supreme Court justice. She was an exceptional person.
May her soul rest in peace
You could start with the US is a constitutional republic
You misclicked, didn't you?
I agree with Kevin Meyer. The current voting system is so vulnerable to tampering by either rogue computer software or corrupt administration, that I don't even trust the results of a 'simple' standard election. Half of the voters have big doubts about the integrity of the process and those who run it!!! I SURE DON'T TRUST them to further complicate the process by making it much more difficult to verify by doing a hand count within a reasonable amount of time. Get the system we have now working reliably!
This was very interesting. Hearing professor Miller speak about natives being in the US Constitution was eye opening. Thank you
Great information!
Remember when republicans appointed qualified Supreme Court judges…..
Lol this women was a Polticial activist not a judge she ruled in favour of Homosexuals and abortionists although these 'people' don't have a basis in our Constitution. Regan promised to appoint a pro life Justice to fish for the votes of Religious conservatives. And he betrayed theme by appointing this Polticial abortionist... so shameful!
Liam is an attractive host
Always enjoy listening to Dr. Cochrane
Ranked choice voting is a cluster fk.
Very glad to hear from Kevin Meyer and Alaska's recent experience, which was good, and positive. Jaime brings the voice of experience, and healthy skepticism. At the end, Steve Goldstein has me in his camp, as a moderate voter having to choose between the lesser of 2 evils in general elections, since Independent's and moderates under the current setup rarely make it to the general election ballot, even though we make up as much of the voting public as either major party does. RCV would level the playing field for those of us in the center.
Yes it will help everyone who actually wants a choice. Being forced to choose between Coke and Pepsi isn't a choice.
Thank you for watching the video and commenting.
In Steve's proposal, what is the signature collection burden for candidates? Would independents still need to collect far more than for a candidate within a party?
Thank you for the question. Mr. Goldstein's organization is advocating to treat all candidates equally--independent candidates in Arizona would no longer have to compile more signatures than partisan candidates to appear on the ballot.
Many thanks to the panelists.

This measure was written poorly. Requiring the original funding source (individual donor info) be disclosed of an entity is too far. Why not just require entities must disclose or reveal their true mission statement or objective versus having to provide the list of donors, their addresses and employers. I suppose this could be problematic as well, but creating hit-lists of donors goes too far.
Thank you everyone involved here for providing this debate and civil discussion of this proposition at a deeper level.

Republicans need to leave Trump behind and go back to using a less polarizing rhetoric. In the current political climate bipartisanship is impossible, thanks to DJT vitriolic legacy..
Has our darling YT scrubbed the likes and the comments too?!🤔😱🤣 Perish the thought! This is the dynamite, that once understood by our feckless younger selves, causes the dark clouds to split apart and the joy of our freedoms to pour in. Very dangerous stuff. Like and share, share, share America!
I have come across CZcams comments on videos of Thomas Sowell that are downright malicious, accusing him of being a "liar" and "charlatan". I've studied Sowell, reading much of his work and listening to him speak on a wide range of important topics. I have never once come across what I would describe as deception or lies. I get a couple of different responses when I question these comments, but typically they do not respond at all. I get the sense that what has really motivated their anguished howls is the fact that Sowell has hit a vital spot somewhere in their presuppositions.
Jason's intro seemed a tad too long. But enlightening as always.
Pinker, Sowell, Riley - this talk could have lasted ten hours and I would still have listened to all.
It looks like Richard Posner's Sex and Reason on Jason's bookshelf. Interesting.
I notice that Stephen Pinker's name is not in the searchable text describing this video. It is Stephen Pinker's presence that created my interest in this item. Thanks.
Thank you for sharing this
Great program and engaging discussion!
Thank you for providing this engaging and informative presentation.
An outstanding program based on the information given regarding Jefferdon's African Am. descendants. Thank you for the thoughtful discussions of the paradox of slavery. Peace and stay safe, Sue Kozel
