I love this era of film making. No Hollywood happy endings, but the stark reality of life. Easy Rider was the same way. These films were groundbreaking and heartbreakingly brilliant.

Why don't they make movies like these anymore?

The beauty of this movie for me is that the movie ends on film, but it keeps on going in your head long after wondering as you see the tragic despair in Joe's face as he holds his dead friend, that somehow Joe finds some peace and happiness, and that life cannot be that terrible and there must be something good...or is life that totally unfair and terrible?
