No time to get the video right, this was a live broadcast (see below) 2022 April 21 at Underhill Bonsai in Folsom, Louisiana Evan Pardue, Artist-in-Resdence, invited me to take part in a live demonstration where we put together a bald cypress planting on two large slabs. The slabs were carved by me to Evan's specifications. The result is phenomenal! Evan's vision for the planting blew my mind. ...

What's In These Tanks? Find out before you dismantle them!

My guardian angels work overtime. The school principal for my kid's school asked the Men's Club to clean up the storage shed and get rid of the "helium tanks." I took the tanks because I wanted to make wind chimes from them; loud wind chimes. The valve stem of the smaller tank was damaged and would not turn, so I dismantled it. As it turns out the tanks are not helium tanks. Let's see what they...

Bonsai is more than the forms we see in Japanese trees. It is the techniques we have learned for taking Nature's beauty and transforming it into art. In this video, I explore the Blind River in Louisiana while exploring what it means to take bonsai into the world. Specifically, how bald cypress should be recognized for how they do not fit within the mold of what many consider to be a Japanese-o...

Before things get going at the American Bonsai Society 2019 convention in Houton, the "Bonsai On The Bayou" event, I took a look around the vendor area. I've known several of these vendors for a while and it's great to see them again. Other vendors are new to me and it was great to meet them. Isn't that one of the great things about bonsai conventions? Seeing old friends and making new ones.
Bald Cypress Bonsai - Root Aphids

Something quick. While repotting one of my bald cypress, I found small cotton-like masses on the roots. I cleaned off the roots as best I could and continued with the repot. Later, I diagnosed the problem and ordered beneficial nematodes to combat the problem. Root aphids feed on the sap of a plant, just like their above-ground cousins, but you don't know you have them. We wire our trees into b...

Bill - I am so sorry for your loss. I truly cannot imagine losing a child. Thank you for sharing your heart about the loss of your daughter. Many hospice programs also offer community bereavement groups and services to those who have suffered a loss, irrespective of how or where it occurred.
Filming, editing and content on a par with National Geographic. You captured what spurs me on in this hobby.
We dont need your stupid music
You are the Dr. Frankenstein of bonsai, my friend
Man, put your dog inside
A lot of work, nice job. What soil mix are you using?
Hi Bill, we haven’t met except by me watching your CZcams Videos. Your Cypress collecting caught my eye since they were one of my first attempts at Bonsai in 1978. I worked at Imahara’s Nursery in Baton Rouge which was the home of the local Bonsai club. I came about one of the cypress the club collected and with the help of the club started what you all call a flat top. Unfortunately I moved to Washington State after graduating LSU and my trees fell into decline / death one by one. Your video’s have re-inspired me to get back into Bonsai and Yamadorie collecting after a 40 year hiatus. My wife and I were in Palma Mallorca Spain last week where we saw centuries old olive trees. I jokingly told my wife if Bayou Bill saw this tree he would have a come along strap on it, and it would be half out of the ground before I could get my digging shovel in the ground. I would love to give you a shout when I am down in New Orleans visiting family sometimes. Most importantly, My sympathies for your loss and appreciate your heart felt message. I encourage you keep putting one foot in front of the other. I heard a lot of love in your voice for your lost child and hope you can find your way back to your God given talent for Bonsai. I will be praying for you and your family Dan George
You should have more subscriptions than just 2.45k...... you have some good insights on BC....I'm from Houma, LA..... Just collected my first BC last month (legally)
Excellent video series and beautiful tree. As a fellow Catholic bonsai enjoyer I appreciate the fitting name. Thanks from Southwest Florida!

Yo would you be willing to chat to a new bc addict about taking care of these guys outside of their natural habitat? I've been on a deep dive into researching and I'm getting allot of conflicting info. Figure best thing is to go to a source of solid experience.
Hey Bill, it was nice meeting you in Denver this weekend and again thanks for the shirt. o/
Oscar! Great to see you in the comments. Denver's botanical garden was a great place to host a convention. The facility was perfect. People were fantastic. Hope to see you down the road.

Or you can go directly to www.bonsainut.com/conversations/add Enter BillsBayou in the "To" field "swamp tree" in the subject, and below the message box, you'll see "Attach Files". Thanks for sharing. Interesting ideas on deadwood.
Thank you. All I did was listen to the tree. I only translated the message.
Great to see you back👍
Good to be back.
Have a great time in Denver. I love bald cypress!
The convention was great. The altitude took a little getting used to. Mostly because before showing up in Denver, I camped at Mueller State Park. My campsite was at 9681 feet. THAT is too damned high for someone who lives below sea level.
Thanks for the insight on dead wood!
Glad you liked it. This is giving me new insight and ideas on how to capture that deadwood.
Great video bill... amazing....
Glad you liked it.
Been wondering where you’ve been. Glad to see you’re still at it. I see Nigel was glad you turned up too. Thanks for the vid.
Love the videos Bill!!!
Happy to hear that. I love yours as well!
The trees you have are amazing. You inspire me to try a flat top bald cypress.
Thanks for watching. Bald cypress are easy. If you want, you can just do basic upright styles. If you want to try flat-top styles you can find me on bonsainut.com from time to time.

Dont know where you are located but if ever in central florida and wanting to collect another bald cypress for a bondai or help someone locate one to collect please let me know. Would also love to document (film/photograph) it! I really want to collect a bald cypress myself and not purchase one for my collection. Im still pretty new to bonsai.
I live in south Florida and was planning on collecting a bald cypress. I think I know a place where there’s a lot of good ones what time of year do you think would be best for me to collect it?

That’s a great looking Forrest. I’m about to make my own Tanuki rock planting with baby sequoia trees, complete with stone steps a cave a slide and swing. I was looking for Muck mixes and came across your channel so you’ve been helpful in your knowledge my friend. Just subscribed 👍👍
Back for another take. This video is amazing. I have a Montezuma forest in an oval pot with no hole. Seems to work perfect. And now another forest planting on a slab. Thing is there is no mud dam and now I have roots poking out of the edges. The whole thing is almost at the point where it can be lifted up. I plan on putting about 1cm soil under it. I realize your not used to such juvenile material. But any suggestions? Also what about the pond cypress Taxodium ascendens? I'm the guy with that huuuge wooden bowl. Still done nothing with it. Perhaps I never will as its still attached to a stump on the tree.
would you feed that tree with whiskey or kerosene?
I recommend a 'light' fertilizer
Good to see ya Bill!
Merry Christmas Bill and friends!!!
Bill, do you have an email I could contact you at?
Lost my older brother when I was 13 to liver disease in 2000. I get it. You never go back to what you were, but I can say it does get better with time. I feel you loss. You're not alone. God bless.
Awesome brother great job and thanks for your time and expertise!🙏
I wish you and your family peace and comfort.
I’ve had my bald cypress bonsai for at least 5 maybe 6 years now, bought as a tiny twig of a starter… The entire time I’ve kept it in a fish tank under at least 12 inches of water, year round 24/7, with a gold fish to eat mosquitoes… I’ve chopped it 3 times, it’s about 5.5inches diameter at the base, always grows a new straight leader. I want it to grow some of the “knees” they are known to get in nature, I believe I read the knees are grown to get air, so I keep my tree under water in hopes knees grow… I’m about to take it to my new place and add it to my turtle pond, planted in gravel in a pot to contain the roots. It should help keep the water cleaner too, in the growing season anyways…
Thanks for watching. The book "Baldcypress: The tree unique, the wood eternal" by Clair A. Brown and Glen N. Montz, concluded that knees are used for starch storage. My belief (because I don't have the funds to do a massive study) is that trimming on a bald cypress is counter-productive for producing knees. My reasons are a daisy-chain of research into the functions of plant hormones. Simplest explanation of my theory: Knees are used for long-term food storage, starch, but it will not store starch if we're constantly asking the tree to produce ramified branches and new limbs.
@@BillsBayou sound theory, but I was always under the impression the knees were used for air exchange, actual “breathing” in oxygen-poor swamp waters… I guess we both need to see if we can find out for sure, right!
