Mana does play an important factor to a mage's power, but it's not everything. The mages said that the battle between them is like rock-paper-scissor, only more complex than that. Frieren herself said she lost to a number of mages that had less mana than her before.

some comments here are goofy asf. Serie probably wouldnt be able to beat frieren in a fight despite having TONS more mana because how how the power syste, works in Frieren. Serie is a living grimoir, her entire being is meant to hold the knowledge of the world while Frieren was literally raised as a demon killer. They a have differing roles, and to say one is stronger than the other (while factually correct) undermines what their entire existence is used for in the story. its like comparing a body builder with Usain Bolt.
