My grandad had a 67 Bel Aire like that one to back up his 67 Impala. The Bel Aire also had a 283/Powerglide and may have even had AC, though he never ran it. He preferred his Impala as it was a 250/3-speed and was easier on gas. I got some of my early driving lessons in the Impala; don’t recall ever driving the Bel Aire. He’d also acquired a 67 Caprice with a 327. 4 four barrel/Powerglide that was pretty well optioned out but not running. It was intended to be a parts car. All were four doors and I wasn’t overly interested in them at the time. Miss them now. Nice find.

My first car that I drove to college in the early 90's was a 67 four door impala. It came fully equiped with field mice and I had to constantly add oil in it but it got me where i needed to go. That thing also had one of the hottest heaters of any vehicle ive ever owned. That ol 283 ran the Ohio Turnpike for 3 years. What a neat memory! ❤ i cant wait to see more here covering the progress of the car.

Some people say to paint it black, but I say don't. It's better to do the things that need done and maybe put reliable wheels on it (cause who knows how rusty the inside of the rims are) and get it clean, then enjoy it. It's not a special edition Impala, or anything like that, so it can be the family hauling sleeper. Better brakes, suspension and rear axle, and if you want to put a built small block in, go for it. Have fun with it. Just please try NOT to total it, cause I'd never hear the end of it from my woman. It's her favorite car, AND favorite color, so if it got messed up, she'd be mad.

Sweet score! Since the transmission is toast consider upgrading to a 700R4 to help get your newly acquired land barge moving. My '65 Impala came with 3.36:1 rear gear from the factory. That gear with the first gear of a 700R4 will really help motivate that car to move even with a 283. The 283 two bbl in my '65 with a slip and slide Powerglide couldn't spin the tires on wet or even icy pavement!🤨 It had to go but if I had it to do over I would of just upgraded the 283 and swapped in a better transmission. Instead of rebuilding the 283 heads that if I recall correctly have 65cc chamber heads, swap on a set of the brand new EQ sbc 305 Vortec heads. They are already machined for screw in studs and conventional valve seals. Buy them bare so you can upgrade the intake valves to 1.94" that are .100" longer so the cheap LD beehive springs will work. Do a little bowl blending and lay the short turn back a little bit and some valve unshrouding and you'll be over 250 intake CFM. Plus they have 58cc chambers to up the compression. Top the 283 off with a genuine imitation RPM Airgap dual plane intake and a 650 four barrel carb of choice and you'll be surprised on how well a 283 can run. There is no downside using this intake on a smaller cubic inch displacement engine, ran one on a sbc Vortec 305 all factory except intake and carb that ran 14.0s in the QM with that intake and a 600 Edelbrock carb in a 3,400 lb car. If there are funds left to go with a roller cam, the Comp XFI hydraulic roller with 202°/212° at .050" with .550"in/.546"ex on a 113 LSA would be the ticket. I have this same cam in my '65 Impala that I built a sbc 383 for. It has a 700R4 with a 3.07:1 rear gear and runs surprisingly good and gets really good fuel economy. The cam info says idle to 5,000 RPM, but it keeps pulling up to 6,000 RPM. Would probably pull further but I have the wrong valve springs on the heads and the valves start floating at 6k and won't rev any higher. Can't wait to see what you guys do with her.😎👍

The thing about sedans? You can still find them cheaper than 2-doors or wagons, less "Car people" turn their noses up when you modify one, and they make good dailies if you set them up right. Got a '76 Valiant sedan for $0 out -of-pocket about 8 years ago. 318, HD suspension, HD cooling, solid, interior not tore up. It's had a bunch of work & upgrades done to it, drove it in the 2024 Southern Classic...people smile & wave, take pictures, talk about their family cars in the past, even saw two people video the car on the freeway.

Dust and rust, not a bad thing

I love the 283. Wont be quick in a car that heavy, but adequate for all - around driving. Unlike the 6 which would struggle some. The 250/275 h.p 327 would have been a great choice when ordered new. That 283 is rated at 195 with a 2 barrel single exhaust
