    Thank you for expanding upon this. I’m a brand new special education teacher and having learning disabilities of my own so reading is something I struggle to do let alone teach 🤣🤣. This concept is very helpful and important. Also, both of your eyes are just radiating bright blue light it’s gorgeous.

    Do you have an example of one filled out? Would love to see how it all connects.. Unfortunately, we don't have a core reading program. Any tips for weekly planning without one? I do have Storyworks and Scholastic News. :)

      Download the freebie here and there’s a filled in example. www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/FREE-Weekly-Planning-Template-for-Reading-and-Writing-Instruction-4577559?aref=zlhzhmnl Are you given a scope and sequence of anything? You could start by finding a scope and sequence for phonics. Then for comprehension, use the texts you have access to and plug them in throughout your year. Double check that the complexity of the texts are appropriate for your grade/time of year (Lexile levels)- this is important for instruction. Build your vocabulary and fluency lessons using those comprehension texts. For more text, getepic.com, ReadWorks, and Reading AtoZ are some great options.

    Teachers deserve to be paid like movie stars- I am not even speaking to the amount of work and sleepless nights they endure to prepare lesson plans, but just their contributions to society, and our children's learning alone, merits them getting the increase. It's time for us to see the value in these awesome people and pay them accordingly.

    You're over-simplifying too much by only teaching that schwa makes the /uh/ sound. There are tons of words where schwa makes more of an /ih/ sound rather than /uh/: -- basket (baskit), bonnet (bonnit), ballad (ballid). It's not that confusing to teach students that schwa occurs when a vowel makes a lazy sound that is different than its typical short sound, and that it typically sounds like /uh/ or /ih/.

    Would you be able to share what your centers look like? Which are independent and which are with a partner? Do you use a rotation board or do they choose? Are buddies assigned? And how long is each center and how many groups do you see each day?

    • @TheSimpleTeachers
      @TheSimpleTeachers Před 10 měsíci

      Hey! Every year, depending on the class, my (Whitney) centers looks slightly different. I have a buddy reading center, but otherwise they are independent practice. Depending on if there are a lot of pulls outs or not, I do like to assign buddies when it works out. But some years it just doesn’t work due to scheduling issues. I’ve done rotation boards two ways- teacher placed into rotations or student choses the order about monthly with a limit on how many students can be a center at once. The last couple years I’ve trained my students to self pace themselves and I call groups back. I love the self pacing because it naturally differentiates the time need for students and teaches a lot of good independent practice skills. Some students need more or less time on certain centers and I like that self pace allows for that. It’s hard to train in ways that rotations aren’t, but I love the empowerment it provides and then it saves hours of figuring out the rotations. I I also prefer to call groups back to allow myself the flexibility of time. Some groups need more or less time with me- so I love it for that. I attempt to get 2 hours tier I literacy instruction with 1 hour small group/tier II instruction. My group times range from 10-15 minutes typically. Hope that helps? What do you do?

    We don't have a core reading program...:( makes it so much harder as I find I have to create everything. How would you suggest creating a yearlong scope and sequence for teaching comprehension and vocabulary? Can this strategy instruction work if we can only do through read aloud since we won't have copies of the text for every student?

    Are you using the text that was used in whole group? Is it grade level text? I was wondering if you use grade level text within your small groups, even if they are reading below benchmark?

    • @TheSimpleTeachers
      @TheSimpleTeachers Před rokem

      Yes, reusing tier 1 text. It depends what I’m intervening on in small group, for phonics intervention we use a decodable, for fluency either a reread from tier 1 or be slightly lower than the current grade level text, for comprehension using grade level text.

  • @kristyguest8443
    @kristyguest8443 Před rokem

    Do you recommend teaching fluency as a unit to the whole group and then in small groups for those who still need more practice with it? Or do you do it a different way with the whole group? I did ask this question before finishing the video...lol. You did address it, but I am wondering if you would do a whole group lesson with fluency weekly with shared reading material (We don't have a core reading program) or a whole unit dedicated to fluency and then reinforce throughout the year?

    • @TheSimpleTeachers
      @TheSimpleTeachers Před rokem

      Yes, teach fluency as a routine reading component during tier 1 instruction. Then those who aren’t at benchmark in fluency may need a fluency intervention. Reusing your main selection and/or phonics decodable texts is a great way to get rereads in with a different purpose! :)

  • @linnettebracero2278

    What about the duration pf each intervention? How do we collect data?

    • @TheSimpleTeachers
      @TheSimpleTeachers Před rokem

      3-4 weeks for an intervention. Continue progress monitoring their fluency to make sure they are making adequate growth showing that instruction is effective. Use diagnostic assessments (perhaps a phonics diagnostic) to continue filling any holes as needed. Hope that helps.

      We use whatever core reading program the district uses. However, we plan our instruction making sure we are text focused and have lessons in phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing every day. So we plan with that in kind and use the program to plug in text and objectives. When needed, we supplement with other text.

      I have a 3 hour block in the morning 2 days a week (with a 10-15 minute recess) and a 2:15 block 2 days a week. Our afternoons are the same, but assemblies, school-wide activities, etc get pushed to the afternoons - so on a weekly/monthly basis afternoon instructional times gets taken away. Fridays we are out at at 12, but we typically have at least 2 hours with the additonal school-wide things that get thrown in on Fridays. I share a classroom and teach the AM block (reading) and my awesome co-teacher teaches the PM (writing, math, and STEM). Hope that helps! A 3 hour block is so needed for literacy! That why my co-teaches takes on writing while we are in 2nd because I need all the time in reading and we just don't get time to write. So she integrates reading to writing or STEM to writing units.

    I’m going through this with my kindergartener and she is currently in a Tier 2 small group. Her school has put her on the possibility of retention list and the end of 2nd quarter is in January 2023. This is helping me understand the breakdown of what the school is doing with her. Question: When you have a child in Tier 2 or 3 do you provide extra homework of what you are working on in class? My child school will not provide it to me.

    Why was I taught that vowels have TWO sounds…when I always knew (as a kid) there were more? We learned about Abraham Lincoln with “Abraham” having three A’s …with 3 different sounds. NOT ONCE did teachers, parents or administration ever mention this SCHWA thing! I thought myself a confused young person but I am beginning to suspect that my friends and I were always right: Those that can’t do, teach. Those that can’t teach…teach English and Gym!
