Skier #1 is how the majority of skiers do it nowadays. They HAVE shaped skis, the just don't use them 💩
Awesome video, look forward to trying this.
Incredible improvement. Now buy some more suitable skis and save these for water skiing.
It's not the same skier you donkey
Why is this "expert" talking about flex rating as if it is standardized across boots? It just isn't.
Really interesting. Am a chicken leg lightweight. Sticktion definitely defines what I face. I'll try not doing my upper buckle up so tight in the future. What are your thoughts on the power strap? I swapped out the Fisher RC4 strap for an elastic booster strap as recommended by my boot tech.
P.S. Forgot to add that boot boards should also have one sideed teflon tape put on them as well.
A hint to eliminate stiction is to use one sided teflon tape on the interior of the shell. First of all the teflon surface allows you to get the liner into the shell easier. An added benefit is that the stiction is eliminated. If you grind your shells the teflon surface will smooth the ground areas, so the liner doesn't bind or stick to the shell.
There is something about skiers and their 911 and I love mine.
Very very helpful. My right foot is small than left. I understand better why it’s hard to flex my right boot than left when I tighten my right boot. I use liner sleeve to increase the volume of my right foot instead of tightening the buckles. Thanks again.
Great to hear!
I have always wondered why manufactures do not make a full featured boots in the 120 range, or maybe I should say I have always been annoyed by manufactures not having a 120 full featured boot
What about when we all were using Derby Flex and risers? Talk about increasing the dead spot on a ski. Those mounting points were centimeters in front and behind the binding mounts.
Super informative and especially relevant for someone who has been diving into the technicals and fine tuning of boots. Picked up end of season deal on 120S WCR. General fit and everything is amazing, however, I need to crank down to the last few rungs.. not ideal and I’m getting that bind at closer end of ROM. Going to reduce volume near calves. Thanks for the information.
Update: put thin spoilers at front and back of liner, holy shit what a difference. My calves are average in size, but the extra space taken up is huge bc and I’m no longer at the end rungs.
Awesome!! 😎
Hi guys Brent , I have same BOA pro Fischer like you I need to get more flex as I am pushed back with those boots I removed one screw only behind and much better ; easy to ski and make turns What about grinding a bit the flap of the cuff to give more room to flex ? Internal one is touching the lower shell . Tom knows what I mean 😊 I live in France , thanks to give me a boot fitter you might recommend Thanks
Very informative, I learned a lot 👍
Glad to hear it!
This is such an important video for people to watch. A boot fit can be modified long after it's been bought, but most people are really not going to adjust the flex on their boots. I wish I had seen this before I bought my boots. I feel like I made an $800 mistake going up to a 130 Flex. My experience echoed his exactly. The 130 felt pretty good on trail, but I had similar issues in chop , moguls and trees (my favorite terrain). 2 questions 1. Can stiff boots also fatigue your quad muscles more quickly? Since I purchased these boots my legs have been screaming almost every time I've been out on the hill. This really never happened to me in the past. 2. Is it possible to get my Mach 1 130 closer to a 110 Flex? These boots fit pretty well and are in excellent shape. (My top two buckles are usually on the second to last notch. From what it sounds like this could also be an issue) I've lost my confidence in bootfitters. Many are just not that experienced. I bought these boots from an extremely reputable shop in Tahoe and I sat with their top guy. It still didn't work out. I don't think the right questions were asked by the fitters. The fit worked, but the application was wrong. I think they saw a 40 yo dad and assumed I skied groomer. Meanwhile I'm in the air and wood as much as possible!! Is 3 piece cabrio a better fit for my style? Don't think k2/FT will work for my foot shape unfortunately.
What is your opinion on the Tecnica Mach 1 130's stiffness? (Compared to some other brands 130s)
They are equivalent to a 70 flex boot in my opinion
Yes agree - so tricky to ski bumps in the beginning
I love when stuff is made more sustainable but really the plastic waste from ski boots is in no comparison to the fuel burnt by car and gas in a person's life eben if you swap every year which I don't think most people do.
great episode. one of the ski content creator.
Awesome content and insight as always
Great episode! I love the bindings resources. Thanks Tom! ⛷️🔥🤙
Glad you enjoyed!
I watched this vid and went through the progression. BAM! My carving took a quantum leap. I can hardly say I was carving before, I was but clearly not exploiting the potential of the turn or my skies. Then I took a dive into Tom’s other videos and thought maybe I should subscribe. $50 a month I thought this might be a bit spendy but, $1000 for an all day private is the alternative. I would give it a try. Happy to say the I was blown away by the material, and what is offered in live programs. I am a believer and wouldrecommend the same to anyone who is serious about their skiing.
Thanks Ted for taking the time to comment about your experience. So happy that you’ve found the big picture skiing site has exceeded your expectations.
As a technical/performance frontside ski my Fischer RC4 CT's are a solid 10/10.
I never knew there was so much to learn about bindings! I love the new mantra 102s as an every day ski. Is there a +112 you'd recommend that skis like it? I tried the Revolt 114, and felt the ski skied me than I skied it.
Any ski that has the attributes and DNA of a Mantra 102 that is in the 112+ range will ski you even more than the Revolt 114.
Interesting across different markets too. Europe trip from NZ recently to France and Switzerland. The rentals and even locals looked to be so channeled into short, sub 170cm, narrow waisted SL carvers. The irony is skiied properly, you do twice as many turns on their huge wide open long runs with the associated extra effort required. The reality looked like most can't ski them properly anyway, weren't fit enough to ski a run without stopping, and spent all day skidding around being dominated by the sidecut and wider tails. An 80ish narrow wide all mountain would suit the majority except nobody was.....which just seemed crazy to me. We took 174cm 82ti's with a 16m radius and they were amazing everywhere at all turn shapes and speeds.
Narrow/wide and wide/narrow - gem! Thanks
I liked this concept to explain those similar waisted skis too 👍
Great collab! Epic Ski/Pugski/Ski Talk has been instrumental in my gear purchases, learning how to tune skis, finding bootfitters, etc. Thanks Phil!
Thank you
Mountain of fantastic info today. Thanks, guys!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent. Really enjoyed this episode. It would be great to hear your feedback one time swapping between a few skis and hearing what you have to say about them and how they differ at your ridiculously high level. Preferably between manufacturers also.
Id like to do that too. If I get a chance to attend a demo day this Aussie winter I’ll do that.
Thank you but I am hardly a rediculously high level skier but I can discern the attributes of a ski. It is getting tougher and tougher choosing a ski because they are really all damn good.
Great instruction. What length ski pole do you recommend Tom? Im 183cm and use 125 poles. Some suggest shorter poles to help with getting further forward and staying connected in the plant. Cheers Nick
I would get some adjustable ski poles like the Play poles my friend Paul Lorenz designed. That way you can experiment and not have to commit to one length. I switched to adjustables years ago and love the versatility. I go between 110cm up to 118cm. Depending on what sort of turns and terrain I’m skiing. I’m 179cm tall
I love this podcast.
They look great. Do the GW soles fit in a normal binding, or did you already have GW bindings? Cheers
Gear stuff. Compliments. Great work. Great student👏👏👏
This video is gold. I've always wondered about proper use and no video explained it logically like this.
Thanks 🙏
This is awesome!
Thanks hope it also helps
Thank you Tom, i was waiting your homework for this summer, whatching your videos make one really reflexionate, very interesting details
Great to hear!
I always tell my clients that there’s a positive to every negative. For example, beginners always get disheartened and a bit embarrassed when they take their first fall, which is the negative, but the positive is that they learn how to get up again 😄
So true!
As a beginner ski instructor this helped me a lot. The way you point out these minor details - that can actually have a major impact - will not just help me progressing my own skills but also will help me to explain it in a more understandable way to my students . Thank you!
Fantastic so glad it was useful for not just you but your teaching of others
Thank you Tom! I think getting good at this will be a game changer for me.
Let me know!
Great video Tom. I believe how and when you plant your pole can have a big impact on the fluidity of your transitions. In addition, having a tidy pole plant gives your skiing a very polished look. The reverse is also true. A sloppy pole plant can disrupt the flow and overall aesthetics of your skiing.
Thanks Chris. You’re in a great position to spread the word to members of your ski school. They’re lucky to have an open minded director like yourself.
Awesome video on using the poles. I was letting go with the pinky. How did you know!😊Major difference keeping pinky strong,
Glad it was helpful! And most of all you could feel the difference 👊
Sweeeeet 👌
Off topic, but do you recommend those Fischer Ranger 96 with their soft flexy tips? I'm in the Pacific Northwest and hope to ski like you one day and yes, I'm a BPS website subscriber
First off thanks for the support 😊 Yes I like the Ranger 96s in bumps. I have spent more hours in bumps with them than any other terrain type actually.
I wish Ben has a better mic
Me too. He was supposed to organise one but his person lending to him fell through
Wow! That’s amazing stuff. My ski season just ended here in Southern Québec but I still watch videos to improve my skiing for the next season. I’m looking forward to practice these little but important tricks. Like you said, it’s not about speed all the time but the aesthetics also count a lot, you get a ton of pleasure by skiing smoothly and with grace. Thank you very much.
Glad you liked it and good luck working on your skiing
Nice ! Thanks you share
Excellent!
Thank you! Cheers!
love it and learn new things. So good ❤❤❤
Thank you! Cheers!
Excellent teaching so easy to understand. Thanks for your videos.
Glad you like them!
Thanks, Tom for grate video! Not many goes into this detail like you. Pinky finger feels great tip and it put all the missing pieces to my pole plant. Already tried it today!
Awesome. Did you feel how it had an impact on the way you felt your balance and motion in the crossover
@@Bigpictureskiing Yes, better balance and more confidence at the beginning of the turn. Also for me it gives better forward movement and sort of it adjusted sweet spot for it because before It wasn't stable some sometimes too much forward sometimes not enough. Ower all It gives me some final missing pieces in balance, fore-aft orientation, and better control and confidence at the beginning of the turn. Thanks one more time!
