How do you grow pineapples?
Don’t throw away the top of your pineapple! With a little effort and patience you can add this unique fruit to your garden. It’s going to take about 3 years to get harvest your pineapple, so if you live in an area prone to frost you’ll want to protect it during the winter. I find that planting them in plastic pots makes it easy to relocate them as necessary.

Planning baby’s first sensory garden
zhlédnutí 42Před měsícem
We’re transforming a small corner of our yard into a sensory garden for our grand baby. We’ll give him experiences with sounds, scents, textures, colors, and shapes. Apologies for the video quality, I’m much more comfortable playing with dirt than I am technology😉 .
What does Ladybug larvae look like?
zhlédnutí 33Před 2 měsíci
Ladybugs are my favorite means of controlling aphids in the garden. Ladybugs lay their eggs near the aphids, and when their larvae hatch they begin munching on aphids until they are ready to form a pupa (ladybug cocoon). The emerging ladybugs will continue to prey on aphids, flying from plant to plant, laying their own eggs as they go.
How to grow Cannas from seed.
zhlédnutí 55Před 2 měsíci
Cannas are an easy to grow, colorful addition to your perennial boarder. The blooms come in several shades of yellow, pink, red, and orange, and there are a few different leaf colors, as well. It easily spreads through rhizomes, but a patient gardener will wait for seeds to develop after the blooms fall.
Plumeria seeds

A single plumeria seed pod will yield dozens of seeds that are not only easy to germinate but extremely rewarding to the patient gardener. The coolest thing about growing plumeria from seed is that the blooms will not always look like the parent thanks to the magic of cross-pollination.

Spiderwort: wildflower perennials for Florida gardens
zhlédnutí 58Před 3 měsíci
Spiderwort is a nice wildflower addition to your pollinator garden. It literally grows like a weed here in Central Florida,- it costs me nothing to transplant from under my oak trees where it keeps popping up. Pollinators love it, it’s not offended by our heat or humidity, and it’s non-toxic - actually it’s edible - and it spreads to form a nice dense clump when it’s not being attacked by the l...

Oleander Moth Caterpillars- too hungry for their own good!
zhlédnutí 30Před 4 měsíci
Oleander Moth Caterpillars are quick to damage your oleander as well as your desert rose bushes due to the moth’s habit of laying dozens of eggs on a single leaf. The single best way I know to control them is frequently inspecting your susceptible plants and removing the infected leaves before they spread to the rest of your plant. Careful: they sting😉

zhlédnutí 11Před 4 měsíci

Growing sweet potatoes in containers in Central Florida
zhlédnutí 850Před 6 měsíci
This year’s sweet potato harvest turned out pretty good. This batch was grown in an old fashioned bath tub from slips we made and planted in mid August. They like full sun and don’t mind the late summer heat we get here in Florida. The tub has a layer of plastic bottles on the bottom under weed cloth which helps with drainage, because you don’t want them in soggy soil. We fed them with fish emu...
San Marzano tomatoes with blossom end rot
zhlédnutí 250Před 6 měsíci
We’re growing our first San Marzano tomatoes in our Tampa backyard garden! The plants are a nice color, they’re full of beautiful tear-drop shaped tomatoes that will make delicious sauce. Out of nearly 200 tomatoes we found about 6 tomatoes with end rot, which isn’t too bad at all. The remedy is simple enough, just cut off the affected tomatoes and hope that you don’t find any more 😉. It’s not ...
Why are my sweet potatoes deformed and mushy?
zhlédnutí 107Před 7 měsíci
This is a tale of two potatoes, one healthy and one not. They grew for about 4 1/2 months in containers side by side, but while one tub was firm and healthy looking, the other was deformed, mushy, and housing a variety of little ants and mites. The only explanation I have is there must have been something lurking in the soil.
