Fair ball
Obstruction should have been called on the pitcher.
Yikes
While this was obstruction, I would still have called her OUT at home. We should take away the effects of the obstruction; here she has to widen her running lane a bit but really doesn't slow down her run, but I still think she would have been out at home - regardless. This though is a judgement call by the umpire, but I think protecting her that far was a bit much with the obstruction that occurred. Here, I would have protected her to 3rd and that is it. For a slight swerve like this, even if we take away the obstruction, she would still have been out at home, she was out by a mile. Was U3 wrong here? No, he judged it according to what he saw. I would have judged it a bit differently, but such is umpiring. Thanks for all you do! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the comment. It is judgment. Umpire has to decide how many feet the runner was slowed down from that 15-20 feet of the fielder in her way and decide if that extra distance would have made the difference on the play at home plate. Also, there are schools of thought that give the benefit of the doubt to the offense since the defense violated the rule. Not to mention we get video while being relaxed vs the umpire being on the field, during live play, and only getting one look at full speed to decide.
The ump called obstruction before she even reached third base. I don't know the rules on this but should she have been giving third base and continue the inning?
@@donnash5813 The play is evaluated in its entirety. The umpire decided the obstruction slowed her down enough that she was out at home. Without it, he judged she would have been safe. The applicable part of the rule reads: "If no play is being made on the obstructed runner [when the obstruction occurs], the play shall proceed until no further action is possible. The umpire shall then call "Time" and impose such penalties, if any, as in that umpire's judgment will nullify the act of obstruction."
@@donnash5813 this was proper mechanics by the umpire; you call Obstruction when you see it, then let the play run. Then after the play is over, you reverse any effects of the obstruction. So, generally you "protect" the player to a base, or you think "That delayed the runner by X amount" so if the runner gets out by less than that X, you call them safe instead etc.
Was not in the way she made a wide turn to hit third with intention of running home.
May be easier to see in the full size video czcams.com/video/bZN52xI-NfA/video.html Runner pulls up and has to work her way around the third basemen. It's subtle but enough that it doesn't allow the runner to go through unimpeded.
@@heyblue3251No she doesn't the runner is clearly wide of home plate even when she gets to home plate therefore there is no obstruction
@@NKgoalhorns Runner definitely pulls up to avoid the third basemen. That's obstruction. Did she pull up a lot or a little? Did it change the play? That's all umpire judgement that has to be called right away in real time.
@@heyblue3251 doesn’t matter how much she changed her speed the fielder is in the way should have been called as an ex coach and ump I’m more mad about the 3rd base umpire not being in position to see or make the call for some reason he or she is looking to left field once the ball leaves the infield and it’s bounced the umpires should be facing their bases or runners coming to their bases
@@adamzemke49 The third base umpire saw it and called it. Notice him point at it towards the end of the video. Ahh, I see maybe it's not clear from my edit that this was ruled as obstruction and the runner was awarded home?
No need to explain
Like watching paint dry woof
That was not interference she was sliding into the bag
Boo hoo, it caused the second baseman to stumble.. therefore correct call
@@uuu817 boo hoo the runner can slide into the bag it would only be interference if she tried to slide into the runner
@@LiamLaForestthis is interference but not judge hand up ?
@@Smyth1-jo4fp search up the rule for interference it says if the runner makes accidental contact with the runner the batter is not out
I like the discussion about how to score the play.
As a giants fan this was very unfortunate 😢
Weird title.
It refers to the umpire mechanic of signaling safe on this play to indicate there was no violation by the runner. If there had, she'd have been out.
@@heyblue3251 Cool.
This play will not be featured in the ⚾️ Hustle HOF. <jogging emoji>
"Honestly, if you were any slower, you'd be going backward."
A runner's baseline is only established when a fielder initiates a tag, if the fielder doesn't have possession, no tag is initiated, runner could run to the mound if he wanted.
Safe
It might have been easier to throw it 2 feet to second base for a force out
The ball was caught for an out. The only out then possible was back at first to get the runner before she retouched.
OK, that was a great catch
Pegging the runner is the best, playing kickball growing up, made it dodgeball, you thought I was gonna toss it to my teammate, wham in your face
Why?
@@heyblue3251because that's how you play kickball
@@simunator Haha. So it is.
Since the defender had his chance to field the batted ball and failed, further contact creates obstruction of the batter runner, and he is rewarded the base because of it.
I agree with you. Note though that home plate did not call it Obstruction and it is not reviewable. The runner was safe because he beat the throw, not because it was ruled obstruction.
This is nothing. The runner is properly avoiding the fielder fielding the batted ball. There is no tag attempt because the fielder fails to field the ball. This is not obstruction either, as the ball remains within reach of the fielder so he is considered to still be in the act of fielding the ball. Live ball, play on.
That's a fair assessment if you judge the pitcher is still fielding the ball. I see the pitcher stop his play on the ball to intentionally get in the way of the runner (note the elbow swing out - best seen in the full video czcams.com/video/U6tJN6zXyJA/video.html In the end, it's a judgement call that can go either way.
Luckily they got an extra challenge in this game (lost one in the first few innings and somehow able to challenge a play later) so they challenged and he was (rightfully) called safe. Rowdy's foot was off the bag.
Yeah, worked out for the Cards. It was a crew chief review. Laz was the calling umpire and called for the review himself. Arenado just beat it out as Rowdy scooped it (looks like his foot was on the bag to me). They were lucky he did beat it out since no Obstruction was called (an error imo) and that's not reviewable.
The pitch being called a ball was just as bad as the runner leaving early !! It was right down the middle
Why is there always a girl who looks like she can handle a farm on a softball team lol
Did the umpire call that a ball?
Just as bad as the other call
Did he cluck like a chicken?
Obvious chicken wing. Good call. I wish OBR and NFHS would add a penalty strike for this. Without a penalty strike, with all the armor batters wear what's the downside to intentionally getting hit?
Agreed. Time to move on from "We've Got Ice!" culture.
Can't review it? Why emphasize it in the rules this year?
It's not reviewable by rule. Don't know why and it doesn't make sense to me. Being an emphasis this year could be to drive more offense. Personally, I think this play 2 years forced it to be dealt with since the ump kind of made up his own rule (runner should have gotten second base but he kept him at first) www.closecallsports.com/2022/10/obstruction-type-eh-porter-keeps-runner.html
because it’s a judgement call, judgement calls aren’t reviewable
@@aaronaguilar9172 Not clear to me that's always the case. Fair/foul is reviewable in the outfield but not the infield for example. Same thing, two different locations on the field.
What if the ball hits the bat accidentally?
Then it's a batted ball and would be fair or foul as appropriate. If it hits the bat and then the batter it would be a dead ball foul (no runners can advance). Does that answer your question?
Yeah that's the right call
I'm not sure I'd even call that RLI in NCAA or NFHS, which do not require a quality throw. You should still judge that the runner out of the lane somehow interfered with the fielder's throw (i.e. by the fielder trying to throw over or around the runner out of the lane), and it's tough to argue that a throw that far to the opposite side of the runner had anything to do with him being out of the lane. if anything F1 might've been trying to hit the runner to draw the interference call (which would absolutely work), and completely missed him
no RLI. He didn't leave the lane and as I've seen in another video, he didn't change his running path to attempt to interfere with the throw. He established a lane of travel.
The batter has to run inside the 3 foot lane. In this case, he was outside of it the entire time so the first condition of RLI was met. If it had been a decent throw that the runner interfered with, RLI would have been a justified call. Establishing a lane of travel (the runner's 'base path') applies to attempted tag plays, never in relation to a throw.
someone's making up rules
Its a foul ball....
How so?
No, it's not. That the batted ball first bounced foul means nothing... it's where it's first touched that matters.
Even though I am fan of Blue Jays, I agreed with umpire’s call.
oh please, give the kids a break. he's allowed to catch that ball as much as the left fielder does !!! it's his problem if he can't make the play. LOL
Sour grapes by the outfielder! The kid certainly beat him to the ball. Yeah, it's so natural for a fan to go after that ball. A lot of fields have seats offset from the wall to avoid just that.
They didn't give the last One a Break. Had to Move To another State and Change Identity. Good Luck Kid you gonna need it.
The kid grab the ball above de yellow mark, the player pull down the kid glove .
So the kid robbed the homerun. Incredible play
Was a smooth grab by him. Too bad it was against his home team!
No the outfielder had it. Wasn’t a home run.
That was not an attempt to hit the pitch. More idiot announcers.
The right call. But this kid's no look catch is something to talk about.
Usually it is of the worst snapped which it did. So I get what he is saying
