I'm 48 and once in a while this performance of The Rainforest just gets stuck in my head in the morning. Such a great show that lives in all our minds forever, the placement doesn't matter. I barely even remember the other shows from '92.
Give a little imagination, and School for Scandles could have worked into one of the children's themed shows, but what are children but little scalliwages😊.
The earth could do with a little love right now. Think about a show that cuts your carbon foot print: start by dropping there membership down to around 135 to 140 so as to not need one more bus ( wasn't 150 bloat enough for everyone, but then 3 or 4 bands decide it should be 175?). The staff only needs one bus. Get rid of the god awful props, that'll cut another tractor-trailer. Set an example for the good stewardship that's expressed in the two Earth shows.
The '90s was really great for the Crossmen and legacy of superb shows. If you're a Crossmen fishinato, you can drop in a CD and pick the year and the show as quickly as you can star snapping your fingers. If they really want one of the coveted top 12 spots, their staff needs a fresh set of eyes to look back to those shows with great charts and NO clutter. And sell all the electronics and trombones too, we could do with one less marching band.
I can't wait to perform parts of this show as part of the Alumni performance on August 9th, 2024. I aged out in 1978 and we didn't play anything like this stuff. It's been a pleasure and challenge to learn. 5/4 time!
DCI was held in Olympic Stadium in Montreal in 1981. This is Warhawk Stadium at UM Whitewater. There was NO FINALS TELECAST in 1981 due to some legal issues between the Canadians and PBS. So it was decided that the DCI Midwestern Championships would be the televised show that year. So this is actually about two weeks BEFORE DCI. The "Top 12" in this show was not the same as the "Top 12" in Canada. Also, several corps that were finalists at both shows ended up placing differently at DCI than what happened at this show. In **THIS** show the Madison Scouts won, with BD taking second and the previous year's winner (27th Lancers) dropping to 5th place. SCV (which won DCI two weeks later) placed 3rd at this show. I think this is the best recording of Crossmen playing "Explosions" I have ever heard. The soprano soloists were on fire that night. This is also one of the better audio recordings from that era.
Idk but kust seem back in 70-80s culture no cell phones meant more time perfecting your craft todays corps evolution don’t have these screamers without synths and mics
that face paint looks wild but I wouldnt have wanted to wear it those tenors are huge, 14,16,18 even maybe? 09:50 love the sound, fat! tenor not soprano
Never understood how broadcast each year had great extras used 80s-90s like PIP for solos then added songs titles graphics then changed it by 2010s they really should spent money used cable cam stadium systems loose that jib/crane
Thurston is indeed a legend, from his time and success with the Crossmen to his competent leadership of WGI percussion for many years. Bravo Mark Thurston!
My high school band did this show in 1999. It's a shame we had to cut Niner Two out because it was the best arranged song. The majority of our band couldn't get the drag step you have to do since it's not in 4/4 time. We still played Birdland and You are my Sunshine. It was my favorite year we had out of the four high school years I marched, then I went on to the cymbal line of Capital Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps (RIP) for the 2002-2003 seasons. I'm 40 now. Go Bones, but bring back your damn cymbal line.
My all-time favorite Crossmen show. Heck, It's one of my favorite drum corps shows.... period. The music is upbeat, the guard is spectacular. Killer drum line and despite being on the small size the brass line sounded like it had 100 very talented members. Kudos!
my first DCI album, I had DCA albums from the 60s, clean video and audio, happy to see the snare line get the coverage, they looked and sounded great! 3:35
Although we were a little challenged in the Brass and Visual captions, we did come a long way. In the end, at Finals we were 4th in Percussion with a 9.5 and 5th in Guard with a 9.4. The Corps finished 6th Overall with a corps history best 93.0.
At the time, people didn't like how much of a departure this show was for Crossmen but I absolutely love it! Who knew this hornline known for hard driving jazz could play two great Symphonic works so eloquently? Highly underrated, under appreciated and grossly under scored competitively (I would have had them in 8th. Not 10th).
There were lots of amazing shows I saw and heard. There were only two shows that made tears stream down my face. '88 Vanguard, and '92 Crossmen. So I was flat-out bawling when Crossmen surpassed Vanguard at Finals this year- and Vanguard turned to face the Crossmen as they played their retreat. Pure class. OMG I need a tissue *snif*
The heart of this show was unparalleled.
I'll Venmo $100 to anyone who can get me the snare part to this drum feature. I'll know if it isn't authentic. Easy way to make $100.
fun stuff! Thanks for uploading this!!
ICONIC
BONES!!!
Crossman stink
The line that changed the game! Wayyyy ahead of its time!
It’s one of the all time best drum books. Awesome arranging from beginning to end.
I loved performing this show (Contra 1981, 1982, 1983)
Don't forget the pit marching handheld cymbals in the 2nd tune, The Elements....All 32 counts of drill!
'90 was the start of some of Crossmes' greatest color guards

In the drum feature that damn snare entrance is so damn FONKY and just nasty I probably would have hyped my damn hat off playing that
I love this show, but the contras poking fun at SCV by doing the Bottle Dance at the end always makes me smile. Great work, people. Bravo!

That made me feel young again. GO, CROSSMEN!
Awesome!
Beautiful 😊
King of grooooove his licks still resonate timeless
Precursor of Bones about to bring on the groove of 91-92
Idk but kust seem back in 70-80s culture no cell phones meant more time perfecting your craft todays corps evolution don’t have these screamers without synths and mics
One of the most head bobbing grooving drumlines to march a DCI field - i recall the other corps all wanted to see this show superb

Damn….the musical cohesion is amazing. This is great ensemble writing.

Love the different pulses in their feet

35:18 That's me!

The first time I saw this Crossmen I thought it was ok. I was wrong. It's one of those shows that just seems to fly by. So I watch it again and again.
17:55 "Barry, they're good, man."

the fade out at 1:47 thoughhh

How many in the brass? I’ve always felt they looked small even for the time.
My years in Atlanta we sang that Sop solo all the time!
What a powerhouse year 1993 was for so many corps!
🥰💢
Great drum solo in the middle.
Go Gary, sop soloist!
i really miss jazz standards in DCI the first song is either artistry in rhythm and hearing it on the field and not in a stan kenton recording is cool
That’s some crazy KISS makeup on the drum line!
Im trying to find who originally wrote/arranged Jazz Rhapsody.
