If you think archer deserves dukes anger, youre reading it wrong. Archers genuinely trying to empathise, hes not taling the piss. Hes saying theyre both victims in this cycle, both dehumanised by the system. Hes genui ely shocked when duke gets cross. Duke knows this but hes saving face by reminding archer that things are as they are and he is still very much in power. Archers emasculated him by mistake because he overestimated dukes capacity for free thought. Again, duke is well aware at this moment that he is in fsct the true prisoner but lacks the courage to face it. I dont think he would have really hit archer hes just angry at his own weakness. Id like to think later on in dukes life he's thought about this exchange and is remorseful. He certainly reapects archer and archer respects him too.

This scene always stood out in a movie that was already jammed with memorable ones, he knows the kid is right and can’t accept it, as bad as the screws were Duke was probably the only one trying to give advice and help, his realisation that archer is right dispite his smugness annoys him and he lashes out the only way he knows how, by becoming what he knows archer said he was, a cog in the wheel

This guy was one of the good officers and Archer disrespects him and makes an enemy of him. Archer may have been smart but he is silly, he lacks wisdom and good sense. He never answered the officer's point about what to do with thugs terrorising decent people.

Duke didn't deserve Archer's lip in this scene. Archer constantly complained that he wasn't being treated like a human being and when one of the screws actually does he insults the guy. It's easy when you're young to look an older person's life and think they're a failure but you've yet to find out exactly how well you're going to turn out as an adult.

  • @stephenwilliams5575

Archers final comment of it being a humiliation to be a long serving officer is off the mark. Not all staff want to be promoted ive served close to a decade and what ive gained is patience and a better understanding of the human condition. Smartarses like archer might have the odd insight but this officer is right in that they're mugs to themselves. I have seen many many archers whove become old men who realise long after its too late that their little 1 man crusade against the system is for nought. It cant be improved from the inside of a cell

There are lots of Archer moments in life, if you are that way inclined. I think something triggers it early and suddenly you're living life with an altered perspective, like on a step ladder of original thought. It's that spirit of I'm going to be me, however difficult that makes things, and no-one can force me into being anything else. Suffice to say, it does not sit well with conventional society and conventional "success" is unlikely to follow, but not everyone chooses the conventional definition of success.

I relate to Archer the most out of everyone in this film, though I spent too long sucking off the system, I did find my little moments of slowly chipping away at teachers or other figures of pointless authority. I remember at school I used to talk to one of the more enlightened teachers, I told him that respect is earned and that I found it baffling that the teachers just instantly expected respect without even showing any cause to receive it. Civility was one thing, but there were very few educators I respected. I also went to a Special school (High Functioning Aspergers in a school with very few like minded people, Archer's point about conversation is very apt for me), education was abysmal, I was also ill equipped to deal with the outside world and consequently, I fell apart. I rejected the outside world and fell into a 5 year stint of anxiety and agoraphobia, which has had devastating affects on my physical and mental health. I am slowly piecing it all back together now and have chosen to take it all as a positive experience, a lesson. But I feel instituonalised myself in a far less obvious and far less brutal manner (would never want to compare my own lifes experience to men who have or had no freedom at all). I also feel cheated. But the bastards haven't ground me down, I face a lot of abuse for my opinions, I have lost friends for my refusal to simply trundle along and cow tow to the modern lines (Trans for example) and I feel an overwhelming empathy for the misfits I know and see out and about. But I also smile. I am ridiculed sometimes for my sense of dress (I'm 23 and I am very into Mod, Two Tone and Punk culture) and I think it is expected I simply do as I'm told and get on like everybody else. But I refuse. I certainly want to get myself sorted, and I do what I need there, doctors appointments, impending surgery etc, but in my own mind I refuse to let anyone grind me down to their level. I have to mask and act a little to survive sure, but I still pick my moments and take my chances to stick two fingers up to the world and undermine those arse holes who mock and belittle and attempt to crush those of us who can think for ourselves and have chosen an inner liberty in spite of the overwhelming majority who lack neither the liberty or the desire for it, and take on the role of supressor at every moment. Society is a neccessry evil, as is conformity, and a world without those things and even people like Mr Dukes certainly couldn't function, but the few of us who have unlocked something else and choose where possible to severely limit our contribution to the collective lie needed to have our functioning societies, well, I think we enjoy it. I see no reason to change. Perhaps as the years roll by I shall mellow, but in all the crap thrown at me over the years by the education system, the state, the innefectual and redundant health service or even the bullies and conformist bores (mostly of my own generation), the only thing they've succeded in creating is a stubborn old bastard who won't back down until he's taken himself as far as this life and his effort and skill permit. Don't let the bastards grind you down - Norman Stanley Fletcher

Archer was the best character in the whole film, he was a smartarse, but he definitely was smarter than everybody there, screw or con. Also, Archer bowed for absolutely nobody, in a place that tough, he even wound up the most powerful man there - the warden. And he used his biggest passion - religion against him and royally took the piss! Archer, for a non violent type had balls of steel!

It's March 7th, 2024 and as a somewhat of a degenerate gambler, it's that rush when you're on a heater / cannot lose. Hitting some long shit odds or winning that progressively, larger wager. When you can "see the future" and everything is going as you perceived it BUT it all ends the same every time. You end up pissing it ALL back and more.. 😞😓 True gamblers know that it's not about the money won but the rush and suspense when you make that large wager and waiting for fate/the mathematics to tell you your fate in that 5-15 seconds.. 😲😳🫣

This is what most of the teachers at my schools were like. I wasn't badly behaved and I certainly wasn't a bully, but I had a volcanic temper and a cruel tongue, and I used to get bored because the lessons always moved at a pace dictated by the class thicko who could barely write his own stupid name the same way twice. I got accused of being a troublemaker, I got accused of having an attitude problem, I got detentions, I got lines, I even got suspended - all because I objected to being pushed around and told what to do, think, say, and feel. Meanwhile, the genuine bullies and the arsehole kids got away with murder because the teachers were scared of the scumbags. Trevor from another Alan Clarke film, Made in Britain, summed it up when he asked his care worker if it would make it easier if he was 'thick in the head like the rest of them.'

It's a discussion between Archer and Duke, whereby Archer is sticking rigidly to his principles of not "giving in" to the orders of the borstal staff. Duke, seems to have an idea that Archer would make his life (and in turn, indirectly, that of his own) easier, by just doing as he is told by the borstal staff, so that he'll be released earlier, and the staff wouldn't need to make extra provision, to supervise Archer (every Sunday, as Archer states that he is an Atheist, and will not go into the chapel with all the others, which would of course have made the staffs' jobs much easier had he done so). So, a member of staff has to be allocated just for Archer specifically because of this. The significance of Duke giving Archer some of his coffee, suggests that - not only does he have a bit of a soft spot for him, but that when he makes clear that he'd just given him some only a few minutes before, he may in actuality have felt "brought back down to Earth" with Archer talking about Duke's lack of promotion in his career. Of course, this would account for why he gets upset with Archer at the end of the clip...he felt he needed to compensate for the lack of significance he perceived that he had after working all those years in the prison/borstal system. This scene is also a very strong indicator that Duke is the only half decent member of staff working at the borstal - he's not a psychopath like Sands or Goodyear, or that detestable governor (whose name I can't remember). Archer is also frustrated at feeling as though he has nobody he can talk with about *_his_* problems - namely, that there are no people working or residing at the institution, who he can bounce ideas off, to be inspired to be creative, or just generally happy - it's all having to come from just Archer, and nobody else. 😢 Duke's own mindset appears to be so ingrained in doing things "according to the system", that when Archer gives him a reality check, it's palpable how "at sea" Duke actually becomes. Archer is also persuading Duke to consider exactly what it is the institutions are "trying" to achieve...are they looking to rehabilitate inmates so that they come out of it better people? Or is it _really_ just about eliciting obedience to the regime that they're imposing instead?? In other words, do they want to help people (directly), or do they just (ultimately) want to help themselves? If you haven't an understanding of corruption in institutions like this don't worry if you don't understand what I'm trying to say. To put it more simply, it's akin to spending somebody else's money "in their best interests", when the person whose money it is, doesn't get to have a say in the matter. There isn't a single character in the movie that I discerned, seemed more "warm" than Duke, and this is why I think Archer reached out to him - maybe in the subconscious hope, that he'd warmly reciprocate Archers' dissatisfactions. There were an immense amount of psychologically choreographed exchanges between the two characters in this scene, which is what fascinates me the most about it. It played out just like a real world exchange would, which is hard to replicate.
