    Seems odd that the Credits say 'Written and Composed by X and Y'. I assume those were the people who arranged it for the film this was taken from? Or are they the Soldiers that wrote it back in the War? Anyways, thanks to John Grey & Eric Peterson and their 2-Man Play "Billy Bishop Goes to War" for turning me on to this song!

    Growing up in New York in the 50's, I remember singing a version of this as a child. Only instead of "Mademoiselle...." we sang "Skinny Malink from (I don't recall) parlez vous. I think it must have been a joining of this song (in the film) and another song.

    I've actually been humming this since I was a kid (I'm 47), but really knew nothing about it. I first heard it on the 1964 Looney Tunes cartoon "Dumb Patrol". In it, we see Porky Pig as a WW1 fighter pilot whistling the tune as he is tying his boots before setting out to hunt the Red Baron (in this case, Yosemite Sam).

    Songs great, but lyrics are a bit wrong.. When the song was done at the start of WWI in 1914, by British troops, it was "inky pinky".... It was some time after this, when it was already being sung in concert halls & had been record as a record, it was at this point that the Americans late in the war (1918) started singing it, & they for some obscure reason started using "hinky dinky". So, original lyrics.. & those by British Commonwealth Forces, sung it with "Inky Pinky".

    • @notsure1277
      @notsure1277 Před rokem

      You are correct. The English soldiers originally sang "inky pinky". I read elsewhere that it was subsequently corrupted to "hinky dinky" by the Americans. That corruption could then have made its way back to the English.

    A Few years ago some French vandals desecrated the graves of some fallen tommies saying (translated) "Roast beefs, get your poison blood from our earth, it is polluting our land" referring to the blood spilt by British Servicemen in France during WW1. apart from being very cowardly, it is ironic that without that sacrifice, France might look somewhat different today.

    • @michellechat4317

      It was in 2003 at Etaples after that Chirac refused to participate in the Iraq war. It stinks long way of a CIA false flag and in any case doesn't represent France. During WWI, the Allied forces were under French command. There were more French troops than British involved in the conflict which doesn't take the magnitude of their sacrifice.
