    I think the Playback mode mapping seems to be a bit off. Ed’s loop station behaves like a one-track looper but with the ability to overdub/mute on 8 separate “master” layers. I think what you should’ve done on the Playback bank is to remap the buttons you used to play the 4 tracks into mute buttons. The Stop button becomes a global stop regardless of which mode, and you map a separate MIDI message for the Play button on the transport. Idk it’s hard to explain through text only, and Ableton is very customizable. Whatever works for you will work:))

    Thank you for a clear, focused and concise presentation. I love Ableton Live but continue to use a physical looping setup controlled by midi. To keep things simple, I control Ableton transport commands with keyboard shortcuts using my Morningstar MKII floor midi controller. I searched but cannot find keyboard shortcuts for the "looper pedal" in Ableton. Maybe those functions are subsumed in the play and stop keyboard commands. I play guitar so using the physical keyboard to control looping just doesn't work. Yea, I could use MIDI with Ableton, but that's another "issue." Anyway, thanks for clarifying the mystifying!

So if this is correct, you should be able to control Ableton with it! Yes - exactly! Performing these kind of arrangements means you need to be incredibly accurate in your loop performance; trust me it is easy to play a bad loop and then it stays in the song! I normally get 13ms (from memory) latency at about 256 - I’ve tried higher buffer sizes and started to notice the latency, so I guess this must be an OK level of latency for me. • @olivergearing
      @olivergearing Před 2 měsíci

      This is a tricky thing to do, but is definitely possible. There are a couple of strategies. If you have 3 loopers setup, 1 can be the rhythm, the second the verse, the third the chorus. Starting and stopping 2 loopers can need quite a few presses, so this can be challenging. Another option might be to use redo and undo to add or subtract parts

    Another way to do this is to create blank clips in session view rather than using the looper. You can set the loop length so when you trigger it to record it will automatically do it to the right length and keep repeating. With midi triggering you don’t need to worry about the timing either way so both will work but if you have preset blank clips for loooping in session view you can also program commands to switch back and forth between different clips rather than replacing or overdubbing a loop. Gives you a bit more flexibility I think.

      @@olivergearing The issue really boils down to what the claim is. e.g a magician's premise is that he's tricking you but within certain parameters. If you learn he just edited camera footage we feel cheated because we knew magicians are 'fake' they aren't really magic, but they are fake within a unwritten but nevertheless agreed set of parameters for what a magician is allowed to do to trick us - and editing camera footage, or getting a 'stooge' to play along don't fit into those rules. Similarly if Dave Lee Roth and EVH are running around on a stage surrounded by pretty girls in a colourful and energetic MTV video of course it's ok they aren't really playing their instruments - but I still expect it to be Eddie Van Halen playing on the record and, if I purchase a ticket to go to a music festival where Van Halen are playing I absolutely expect the musicians on stage to be playing their instruments and singing live. On youtube, I guess you could therefore argue that it's not live, but here's the premise, if I'm creating a video that is more or less saying "Hey girls check out my guitar chops" If I'm not actually playing then that seems disingenuous and I can understand why people would consider that fake. Similarly for anyone who is purporting to be creating music on the fly using various midi controllers and maybe singing too - I'd expect that performance to be live - and if it isn't then they should make that very clear, especially if the video appears to show them in a way that suggests they are creating the music as we watch it. Now a few youtube guitar players and other musicians end up where they do a recorded performance of the music when the cameras aren't rolling and they can be relaxed and whatever else, and maybe do a bunch of takes trying to get a perfect one - and then they film themselves in a more sort of audience friendly way and they're playing rather than miming, but the playing we hear is an earlier studio take - and obviously if there's any difference between what we're hearing and what they appear to play then people will spot this. Some will be ok with the knowledge about how the realities of filming vs recording work, and others will put it straight into the 'fake' category and feel cheated by that performer. The bottom line I guess is that there are no actual rules, each performer has to decide what they are comfortable with doing and with how honest they are with their audience about what they are doing. Equally each audience member together (or in comment sections collectively) can decide for themselves how they feel about what a performer is doing or appears to be doing, But, certainly youtube artists need to realise that if they are not playing and recording themselves live and they aren't completely open about how their content is created that a section of their audience is going to have an opinion about that which they are likely to be very vocal about expressing. Particularly in the case where a performer has said (or strongly implied) they do one thing but they actually are doing another - i.e if you BS your audience they are far more likely to feel cheated if they discover you lied - with the potential for a backlash if they had formed an idea that what they thought you were doing required significantly more skill, talent or whatever than what it actually does. e.g If I create videos where it appears I'm playing lots of fast, clean notes on the guitar a lot of people would get upset if they discovered there were any kind of editing techniques, speeded up video, altered audio etc to make my supposed "live" performance better than my live guitar playing actually sounds - and you can see this has been the case on youtube and instagram etc. OTOH once the notion a guitar player can 'fake' their performance exists there's also a section of any audience on youtube who are immediately cynical and suspicious that any skilled performance has been faked. This is no different to the idea that cycle racing, because in the past has had so many riders using performance enhancing drugs now many of the audience think every successful rider is cheating - they've kind of soured the milk for everyone else - whether they cheat or not.

    Nice video. As far as the one button play and stop, I’m using a Nektar Pacer foot pedal, and in the settings you can have one button round robin up to 6 cc messages, so in theory when I set mine up I could have it cycle through two CC’s and assign one to start one to stop. See if your Behringer has that functionality, and if not maybe take the Nektar for a spin.

      Thank you - great suggestion. I haven’t heard of that pedal so I’ll check it out!

    This is the exact video i was looking for. As soon as you showed your track setup it just clicked for me what went wrong in my tries of setting up loopers. Thank you so much! Liked and subbed👍

    How are you getting around latency?? I always use direct monitoring on my interface to record with zero latency but this would not work for play back, or am I missing something?

    • @olivergearing
      @olivergearing Před 2 měsíci

      I normally font get too many issues with latency - I have a MacBook Pro from 2021, a behringer UMC 1820 interface, and it works really well.

      @@olivergearing you didn't explain if these are all audio tracks on the setup they were already renamed i know the keyboard was midi but what were all the other tracks.

      @@christopherfarrington9270 Just look at the video. Where a track says "Audio In", it's an audio track. Where the track says "Midi In" it's a midi track! So, they're all audio tracks except the "Keys In" track which is Midi.

    Great tutorial, but why do I get so much latency? I'm using an old (2012) Macbook Pro with 16Gb RAM and a MOTU Traveller (running on Firewire - hence still using old Macbook). I like syncopation, but the latency makes it sound sloppy compared to using a looper pedal. Could there be something I'm doing wrong? As far as I can tell I've set it up exactly as you did (including using an FCB1010). Is my system just too old? Also how do you set up 2 different notes on the FCB1010 to both trigger the stop on Ableton? Or have you set button 10 on bank 3 to D7 as well as button 10 on bank 2?

    • @olivergearing
      @olivergearing Před 2 měsíci

      For the last part - yes - the same note on the 2 banks is how I do it. You can only have one note per trigger action in Ableton. I’m not an expert on the latency issue, but I would presume it isn’t helping the latency. Have you changed the buffer size and resolution in settings? Play around with these settings, maybe that will help?

    • @bakabeyond
      @bakabeyond Před 2 měsíci

      @@olivergearing thanks for your prompt reply. I took the Motu Ultralite AVB out of my studio and the latency is so much better, although to get it really tight I need to set the looper inputs to the line in, rather than channel “guitar in” which means I can’t do the RC20 channel. I really like the functionality of the looper but it has one big disadvantage compared to recording loops in clips: I often use Live slaved to a live drummer so we can play as a band and throw loops in that are in time with us, rather than following a click. When the tempo changes it changes the pitch of loops in looper, while loops recorded into clips stay in pitch.

    • @olivergearing
      @olivergearing Před 2 měsíci

      @@bakabeyond there are settings on the looper that will make it sync to your Ableton tempo, so it would be worth playing around with these to see if that helps your live set up!

    • @olivergearing
      @olivergearing Před 2 měsíci

      There could be a number of reasons for that. The most likely I think are the monitor settings - play around with these

  • @Medium0Rare

    Why would you use midi triggers instead of Ableton's automation?

    • @olivergearing
      @olivergearing Před 2 měsíci

      The automation lanes are a good option, and I sometimes combine the 2 approaches. The main drawback for automation is that you can only see 1 automated parameter at once, whereas with a MIDI clip, all the notes are there
