Starting a FX3 build first week of June - any advice/recommendations?

Awesome video! I start my FX-3 build in July and can't wait! How did going with a custom paint scheme work? Did you have someone outside of Cubcrafters design it?

It sounds like you have narrowed it down to your drag wires which I would agree with the factory that is your most likely cause. The first set of wires are accessible where they intersect by pulling the tank covers assuming you have extended tanks. They would be the most likely since they have the most opportunity to vibrate against something and closest to your ears. You should see an insulation sheath on at least one of those if the factory installs them the same way they recommend in the builder's manual. I could think of a few ways to secure those but a guy that straightens teeth for a living knows several, I am sure.

What about the horizontal stab brace wires (4)? If you tap them are they taught?

Is there a particular year or sub model that has the square dash? The Super Cubs I’ve seen always have a rounded dash.

That’s quite a Humm to me. It sounds like a cable humming to me ?

I fly a 150 with an engine monitor that has carb temp. If the carb temp goes below freezing, I’ll start partial carb heating after I get to 1000’ AGL after takeoff, even at max power on climb out. I always do full carb heat on descent when below 70F. Yesterday I flew while it was freezing out and kept partial to full carb heat to 35 or more degrees the entirety of my flight. Never an issue. Even with reduced power on climbs, the cold weather gives 500’/min. easy.

You are the first one I see with a "raised" tailwheel. If you have big bushwheel you can do that, so you can see something in front of you. Seeing nothing is a PITA with taildraggers. Some install a camera (Trent Palmer), but why does not anybody follow your example ?

When I had an issue with hum it was a couple screws missing from an inspection plate under the Cub.

That's very interesting! I went back to check one of your earlier videos, "$200.00 Egg McMuffin, Carbon Cub FX3" and I can hear it slightly at ~3:50 and again at ~13:00. This video the sound is more prominent and It seems to be consistent and happening only when your setup to land and on a left turn. It sounds just like when one blows across the top of an empty bottle known as Helmholtz Resonance. It's difficult to pin point which side its coming from but my guess is the left side. Check the ends of your flaps in the landing configuration for any open holes, open areas on landing gear members, open areas on wing strut ends, etc., to see if there are any cavities where the wind may be blowing across causing the resonance. Beautiful Carbon Cub by the way.

check all tension connections on the elevator and rudder, you might be getting some vibration that you aren't feeling but is making the noise and I'd look at the exact air speed when i comes on and off.

Sounds like it is a harmonic motion induced by a low speed low power setting. Try changing the tension on the aileron cable and see if it still happens or if the hum changes pitch. Think about tuning a guitar string.

The hum in your video is a pure tone, generally at about 366Hz. You can occasionally hear it change tone slightly. Between 11:05 and 11:10 it goes from 366 Hz to 377 Hz. I think that's too high a frequency to be the fundamental mode of your aileron cables (my earlier theory) or the tail brace wires. It could still be a harmonic. Still, it would be hard to square that with sudden shifts in frequency. I only looked at that slice of time mentioned above; it might be fruitful to look at more of the data. I don't think your camera will be much help in isolating this. At that frequency, it would need to have a very high frame rate to see it. At some points it seemed like we might be seeing aliasing, which is what you'd expect from too-low sampling. I'd definitely suggest trying to get your eyeballs on it. (Or a super-duper high-speed camera.) For what it's worth, vortex shedding at 370 Hz and 60 knots would be from something around 1/2 inch in diameter. Like a jury strut.

My fx2 did the same thing. I believe it is the cable going up the back of strut. If yo cut a piece of hose and slide it over the cable rite where the cable is closest to strut and dab a little silicon to hold it to the strut the noise will be gone. Pics to follow. It really can’t be seen it’s like a guitar string. That’s my 2 cents.

I am no expert by any means (disclaimer) but it seems an angle of attack wind speed caused issue. I kind of hear a sound like plexiglass/plastic vibrating against metal. Take that for what its worth.

Does it do it in right turns to land? I see you're always turning left when it happens. Also, is the skylight (top glass) secure?

I don't know anything about smoke systems but knowing you have one maybe try pulling the breaker on that?

Check your flap gap seals, wing root fairings for any abnormalities. When your pulling back power during that slight left turn you might be setting up a scenario where wind speed and angle of attack are both inducing a harmonic resonance on one of these items. Steve Michaud EX-3 Driver

I've occasionally heard something like that on my FX-3, and I think it's the aileron control cable resonating like a violin string. If you narrow it down to a particular span of the cable, maybe you could crimp a bit of lead from your fishing tackle box to it mid-span to confirm.

Try a landing with the fuel pump off.

does it stop when you shut the engine off and let it windmill?

I have never heard that sound on my FX3 or any other FX3 I’ve flown. That is very strange

Not sure why you would want smoke on a Cub unless you did air shows. From the looks of it that plane's not made for fat guys. That would suck if you couldn't pull up because you ate too many cheese burgers! (or beers)
