Detroit's Chinatowns: A Legacy of Resilience
zhlédnutí 295Před 3 měsíci
Chinese immigrants built a thriving Chinatown in Detroit starting in the 1880s-then rebuilt it when their enclave was erased by freeway expansion in the city. LSA doctoral student Lily Jiale Chen curated an exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum that celebrates the stories of Chinese Americans in Detroit, from their migration to the present-day community. “Drills, Drills, Drills” By Nicole Tooley, U-M LSA student The wind jostled a traffic light so hard, I thought it might strip the colors away. I walked past my old school and witnessed a boy, just a child, upside down. He told me, he was practicing cartwheels all the way to Ohio should the time come. The wind would help, I assured him. And there, at the base of the tire tower, I watched a girl,...

“Sitting in the academy” By Noor Al-Samarrai, U-M LSA Creative Writing Graduate Student For many years I have practiced being in the world, even with its grief. Interesting that this was posted over 9 years ago, and no one besides UM has commented yet. I was googling how to spell squoosh because spellcheck keeps telling me it's wrong (but I apparently had it right), and this video was suggested among the results. The way Professor Curzan uses the three words is perfect (to me). **I** was using squoosh to describe an almost kneading-like of ingredients in my hands and through my fingers for something that was almost like a dough, but not quite as doughy a substance as one would actually knead. So in the recipe I was asked to write down to share, I used "squoosh" in the directions ☺️

Amazing
We need Chinatown to get rid of the blight and desolation and vacant lots in that area in Detroit
eh.... there's white appreciation for them now. back then the university of michigan got boat loads of mail calling the Fab 5 ni**ers with death threats.

Poor fox
Brave the Wild River, (2023) by Arizona journalist Melissa L. Sevigny, is an enthralling account of the Clover-Jotter-Nevills expedition. Meticulously researched and beautifully written.
I thought all the states of that time permitted slavery until it was abolished.
What *are* complex systems? Learn grammar in school??
Beautiful!
When is the Chinatown exhibition on display at the Detroit Historical Museum?
Unfortunately, the exhibit was only available at the Detroit Historical Society as a short-term, temporary exhibit.
Many Brits say kin-ga for king or talkin-ga for talking. Listen to Paul McCartney for a few minutes.
Hmmm ... # of Big Ten titles won - zero (0); # of Big Ten tournament championships won - zero (0); # of NCAA tournament championships - zero (0), not even a measly NIT title. Alot of flap, smack, strutz, ink, noise, et al. And nothing to show for it. And Weber won't even come near it or have anything to do with it. Probably wishes he'd played somewhere else ... that's part of this story, too, whether anyone cares to admit it. This is just the arrogance and presumptive attitude of a self-satisfied institution. One can tell the state of current undergraduate education when they begin to intellectualuze everything. This is nothing but bald faced celebrity worship. 😮
She's so hot
That was amazing! Keep it up!
Mushka mushka mushka 〽️
This guy is such a mushka 🔥🤍
Webber was getting 200k. Illegal? Rose was getting 150k. That's how they assembled that team. 10 I% Facts. Hey Michigan? Tare that Banner down. A disgrace to College basketball.😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
One should NOT say "ay pencil." The indefinite article is pronounced "uh." Look it up in any dictionary.
Do you think that mastodons could stand on their hind legs? I imagine that they wouldn’t have much need and they are more solid than the mammoths
Aww that was great!
It is such a shame what a mess the leadership of the University and the state of Michigan have made of the cost of studying at UM. I studied there in the 1970s, and my yearly in state tuition was number if the HUNDREDS of dollars. Not thousands. And, in those days Michigan was actually rated much higher among American universities than it is today. If I recall correctly, Michigan and Berkeley were regularly ranked among the top ten schools in the U.S. and often in the top five, right after Harvard, Yale, Princeton... Now, I think it is much further down the line. I don't know how the university and the state of Michigan managed to screw up the public financing of this public university so badly that it is partly financed by a huge amount of PRIVATE debt, not even public debt, which would be bad enough. It's a crying shame.
Just curious what FARAZ HASSAN means when he said he’s interested in Geo-Politics? As an alum I’m concerned with the political situation going on in Michigan.
So great to hear what your study abroad experience meant to you, Derek!
As-salamuyalaikum Hello, Everyone Greetings to Mr. Faraz Hasan
Proud of you D! 🎉
Much love for the Fab Five, proud to have lived during that time and really experienced how impactful that team was from a cultural and media frenzy standpoint. There will NEVER be another Fab Five.
Only graduated in April and already miss it so much.
GO BLUE 〽️ 💪 🏆
Trend setters and they are all doing fine in life, contrary to the narrative. Kudos to the FAB 5
When ppl say they underachieved, theycant forget that their best player was there( Webber) for 2 years. When you compare them to UNLV, remember UNLV was MUCH older. Larry Johnson arrived at UNLV at 20. Webber" left" Michigan at 20. If those guys were there 4 years, ppl would have forgot about UNLV.
Go Blue! Excited to support students like Alex on Giving Tuesday!
I will be graduating U of M with a degree in mathematics
Brilliant
A great linguist, his pronunciation is nice and clear, and he reads world famous works for learners to listen to and learn. Thank God!❤
I had no idea “literally” has been misused for such a long time.
CSP was great if only because in csp classes you weren’t the only black person in the class.
The Banners should go up as they were earned. The University is for the students as they make an impact on Society. The Fab five did all of those things
You only have to view some of the videos on CZcams either close to shore or around the coral reefs and it's easy to see that fish stocks are declining at an alarming rate and when our oceans are devoid of life because of the greed of those countries who take far too much like China for instance then what will be the state of our world because it seems to me that people just don't seem to care
can you give me he name of the bugs in video
Both Professor Williams and I have been deeply moved by the Catholic Bible's Book of Wisdom, Ch. 11, verses 22-26 and Ch. 12, verse 1. I had an epiphany that this beautiful excerpt is God's real endgame for humanity.
A wonderful professor! He would have been a consummate actor if he hadn't chosen a teaching career.
So awesome!!
The Great Professor Ralph Williams. 🐐 🐐
