I always look forward to the Flat Out Under Pressure 24 hour art-making competition! I can’t wait to see what the 100 other Greenville-area artists created in just one day. It’s always incredible to see! My piece this year is a 20x20 mixed media fiber art piece titled “Blueridge Wildflowers” and it’s made with combination of rug hooking, punch needle, needle felting, and embroidery techniques.

A peek at the process: needle felted wool landscape featuring an old red barn. Watch as I use barbed felting needles to matte down layers of dyed roving onto wool fabric to create a fiber art painting. The frame is a large custom routed walnut oval.

My 3rd visit to the John C. Campbell Folk School, I tried my hand at basketry. This was a completely new medium to me and I loved it! During the 5 day workshop our class learned to weave reeds, grapevine and yarn onto naturally shed deer antlers, creating sculptural baskets. A huge thank you to the instructor Mark Hendry and assistant Scarlette Rouse for sharing their talents!

My largest EVER, this 30x40 mixed media fiber art piece was a combination of elements from 3 pieces I had made previously. Techniques used include needle felting, punch needle, rug hooking, and embroidery. Materials used are wool roving, wool yarn, and wool fabric strips. The piece took approximately 70 hours to make but I'm so happy with how it turned out!
