Thank you for an excellent, comprehensive lesson! I've been singing for 45 years, in vocal groups and on my own. My solo focus is in the narrative style of traditional folk (Lou Killen was a mentor), so despite my years of choir singing I do not have a classically trained sound. I also have a very casual relationship with music theory, so please excuse my ignorance. Thank you in particular for discussing the daily changes in vocal range. Mine varies dramatically, even between hours of the day. When I collaborate with other artists and they ask what key I sing certain songs in, I just shrug because it fluctuates from D to A. (That descriptor may only pertain to folk guitarists who think the key is defined by where they place their capo, lol). We'll decide it's in one key, and half an hour later I've shifted up or down a step. Apparently, I am most often in the key of E, which is not popular with my fellow folkies. The traditional narrative style relies on emotional interpretation for the purpose of storytelling, which adds to the fluctuation. It's difficult to describe; my connection to a piece and how well it comes across to an audience depends upon where I place it in my vocal range. It just feels right in some keys, and there's an emotional disconnect in others. Hormones, hydration, respiratory health, medications, the frequency and intensity with which you rehearse, all affect your vocal range. When I was on biologics my singing voice was thin and fragile, as if my vocal chords were lost in the desert. They recovered a few months after I stopped the treatments, and I don't think I have ever had a stronger feeling of relief. It felt like my soul had been returned to me. Despite the fluctuations in where my strongest voice is, I am firmly in the contralto range. In choirs I sing alto, in my a capella group I sing tenor because we often don't have any and I'm the only one who can reach the notes. I lack the power to project in the mid-tenor range, though. In middle school (age 11-13) I sang first soprano. We didn't have enough of them -- do we sense a theme? -- and my choir director felt my voice had a sweetness to balance some of the shriller voices. It was frustrating, because it was not my strongest voice and I could barely reach some of the notes. I told Mr. H he had placed me in the wrong section, and he agreed that I was not best suited for Soprano 1, said that he knew it was difficult, and asked me to suppress my perfectionism because he really needed me in that part. 1st soprano in middle school is basically mezzo-soprano, so it wasn't a ridiculous request. Mr. H was my choir director for high school (age 13-17) as well; imagine my surprise that first year to be ranked among his strongest altos! It was still frustrating; even the usual alto line was half in my head voice. We had a small tenor section and their parts were in my belt voice. But for that ensemble my timbre did not fit the sound our director wanted. Because my range doesn't match a lot of currently popular music, I do a lot of harmonizing with what's on the radio. Cher, George Ezra and Tracy Chapman are my closest vocal matches, although my voice has a lighter quality. I always sound softer and more feminine than I think I do.
