Nettle Tree Butterfly with open wings, in an ancient meadow near Rivert, Catalonia: 23 June 2024.
This was only about the third time I had seen Libythea celtis and certainly never with the wings open. So I was delighted to find this one displaying for some reason ('perhaps newly emerged and warming up in the morning sun?).
This was just one of the "gems" to be found around the Rivert stream and its surrounding meadows. This was, without doubt, in my top ten butterflying mornings and absolutely one for the book!

Grand Antlion (Palpares libelluloides) in flight on 24 June 2024
zhlédnutí 149Před měsícem
I had waited for just over a year, since I took still photos of this dragonfly-like creature. This time, I wanted to show this voracious predator (especially as an "alien"-like larva) in flight, and I was not to be disappointed: in this short film we have the adult at rest and flying, in a strange fluttering manner. This is appropriate, as antlions in general are actually unrelated to the beaut...
Spanish Purple Hairstreak in an ancient meadow near Rivert village, Catalonia on 23 June 2024
zhlédnutí 155Před 2 měsíci
We arrived at an astoundingly beautiful streamside field at about about 9.30am. At 740 metres, the altitude meant a jumper and cool start. Once the butterflies started to warm up (when we arrived it was less than 16c in the mountain foothills of the Pyrennees, but rapidly and typically warmed to 24c by midday) my 148th new European species presented itself right away. A real gem this one: endem...
Black Hairstreak butterfly at Hewins Wood, Bucks
zhlédnutí 192Před 2 měsíci
Hewins Wood, east of Edgcott, is a mysterious strip of mixed woodland, running off the road, lining a public bridleway. There is plenty of tall Blackthorn, but the trick is to view these butterflies lower down for photography. At Ditchling Common in Sussex, honeydew on Bracken fronds can be very attractive, but at Hewins Blackberry flowers in open sunny areas does a more consistent job. Peak fl...
Pearl Bordered Fritillary butterfly in Vert Wood, East Sussex, 17 May 2024
zhlédnutí 56Před 2 měsíci
This fritillary is managed for specifically by British Butterfly Conservation on this reserve. Park Corner Heath Reserve has wide rides with short vegetation. This contains violet for the caterpillars' foodplant, and Bugle flowers for adult nectaring (as seen in the video). Direct Sun is also usually required for the May flight of the butterfly, and fortunately I was blessed with a wonderful br...
Persian AKA Aegean Meadow Brown Butterfly (Maniola telmessia) on Rhodes 8 April 2024
zhlédnutí 138Před 4 měsíci
This beautiful, fresh, female Aegean Meadow Brown, my 143rd European species, was one of around 30 seen on the north-east facing slopes of the Lyndos Acropolis. It was remarkable for being on the wing at all in early April, but this was facilitated by the well-above-average temperatures experienced on this island over the last 6 months, through the winter and early spring. Its normal flight tim...
Male Lesser Fiery Copper butterfly at the Rhodes Acropolis 9 April 2024
zhlédnutí 133Před 4 měsíci
This was my 140th European species. We eventually found two colonies, which feed on Knot Grass, in the beautiful ancient meadows of Monte Smith: site of the Rhodes Acropolis. Numbers are usually small at any one time, but once found, they are unmistakeable, especially the male, which is mostly a brilliant fiery red, as the name suggests!
Acropolis Cats on 7 April 2024!
zhlédnutí 665Před 4 měsíci
These charming cats are very friendly and inhabit the the more hidden, rocky areas of the Monte Smith Acropolis, near Rhodes Old Town. They are not starving but rely on the kindness of strangers, so we took along some tastey food for them. This was a welcome distraction from our butterflying adventure on the Acropolis, looking for the Lesser Fiery Copper and Pygmy Skipper, as the weather was ra...
Blue Butterfly on Higher Hide Heath: stunning, fresh and out-of-season! My best Silver-studded Blue!
zhlédnutí 133Před 5 měsíci
On August 20th 2023, I was filming the Grayling (see previous video) in Dorset and not expecting to see a silver-Studded Blue, let alone a freshly emerged male like this one! It may represent a partial second generation, after the relatively cool and wet July and August of the year in the UK. The Dorset Heaths(for example near Wareham) and the more open southern parts of the New Forest are good...
Fighting Butterflies, or Grayling Courtship? Higher Hide Heath 20 August 2023
zhlédnutí 146Před 7 měsíci
Higher Hide Heath reserve, near Wareham in Dorset, is a rich Heather and bush-covered heathland with stunning wildlife to offer the visitor, especially on a calm sunny day in Summer. I was incredibly fortunate to film a pair of Graylings there, with the female fully displaying the upperside of the wings: really the only time this species appears on the ground with wings open. The several dozen ...
Superb Brown Hairstreak upperside view: Shipton Bellinger county boundary hedgerow on 19 August 2023
zhlédnutí 139Před 9 měsíci
I was extremely fortunate to find this female Brown Hairstreak displaying full uppersides, during a series of sunny intervals and modest temperatures. The butterfly is seen on a small Blackthorn plant and was probably looking for egg-laying sites. The relatively large orange patch on the forewing confirmed this to be NOT to be one of the many males, often seen along this ancient border hedge, l...
Beautiful Chalkhill Blue butterfly at Warren Hill near Tidworth 6 August 2023
zhlédnutí 129Před 9 měsíci
This is a stunning view of both the Chalkhill Blue upper and underside, as well as its superb habitat at Warren Hill, just within north Hampshire. The site is a public access site and just a wonderful place to see the full range of chalk-downland butterflies: which also include the local Silver-Spotted Skipper and Adonis Blue. There is a great deal of other wildlife too: for instance a Stoat li...
Comma sucking fruit juice: Warren Hill 6 August 2023
zhlédnutí 123Před 10 měsíci
I had seen very few Comma butterflies during the summer of 2023 and this was only my third. I was delighted to film it on some colourful Wayfaring-tree berries, and against the beautiful backdrop of Warren Hill, near Tidworth in North Hampshire. This was a lovely example of the "typical" form of the summer butterfly, rather than the brighter-orange "hutchinsoni". The biggest bonus was the seque...
Purple Emperor at the Savernake Forest in 2023, Part 2: close up
zhlédnutí 328Před 11 měsíci
Here is a close up view, illustrating how the changing light angle affects the extent of the visible purple shine. The yellow probosis can be plainly seen, "sucking up" salts from the wet stoney path. 'Wonderful view, enjoyed completely alone.
Purple Emperor at the Savernake Forest, 2023, Part 1
zhlédnutí 162Před 11 měsíci
9th July 2023: this was only my second really close view of a Purple Emperor with its purple irridescence, and the first time I had seen a male taking salts on the ground, along the approach avenue. As can be seen, some new gravel hed been put down to fill a few potholes in the track and this seemed particularly attractive, after the early morning rain. In this case, I was alone with an "Empero...

Beautiful specimen!
How lovely. The last time I remember seeing one here in the UK was in my parents' garden in Hastings in the mid-70s!
As you say, the head is very different the UK House Sparrow.
It's a beautiful specimen. Great video!
The elusive water rail! How lovely!
