When Luke activates that lightsaber he gets from Ben on Tatooine for the first time, you hope that he puts that thing away soon before he accidentally dismembers someone. In the sequels their threat level is on par with a common can opener. Edit: Actually when I think about it, the pseudo-hilt of Kylos sword gave me the feeling of imminent self-mutilation. Why did they add those? Maybe they wanted to surprise the audience like George Lucas managed to, when Darth Maul reveals the dual-bladed lightsaber. I for one didn't see that coming. You see that thing and you know Darth Maul has to be very skilled to dare wield a weapon that has such potential of inflicting harm to the user. Didn't work for me with Kylos sword though, that three-bladed lightsaber seems unwieldy and not well thought out. I foresee the next Star Wars antagonist sporting laser-nunchucks. No, even better: Light-Flail.

Honestly, I don't think any Star Wars media has reached the cool potential of lightsaber duels. How come nobody has ever turned their saber off mid swing, forcing the enemy to block, then landing a strike on the opposite side? Why has nobody thrown their lightsaber behind someone and force pulled it back through an enemy?

My favorite duel was Obi-wan vs Anakin in Revenge of the Sith. What a finale. I loved that whole movie...scratch that, I didn't like the reason for Padme's death, I thought that was lame, but the rest of the movie was amazing.

i hate the way that the lightsaber fights are so slow nowadays, and that it seems concentrated only on the big heavy swings and not the fast paced movement from the prequels. personally, i loved the Anikin/Obi wan fight on Mustafar, and the emotion behind it almost made me cry

Nick Gillard was not invited by Disney Lucasfilm! I assumed that, but it is still shocking to hear that actually. It is also heartbreaking to hear that he said "Working for Lucasfilm was like a family", because I don't think that statement would be applied to Lucasfilm today.

my favourite duel is darth maul vs ahsoka

The reason they're slower now, is cause modern lightsabers are much heavier than what they used during the prequels. My own lightsaber hurts my wrist after too much spinning. Also, the prequels had their fair share of bad fights too. Anakin vs Grievous is probably the worst duel in the franchise. The first half of the Maul fight is an eyesore with how bad the green screen is. And those movies also had odd and unnecessary closeups that obscure the action. We can criticize Disney's duels (they're largely very average), without just glazing the prequels. Plus, the best duel is still Luke vs Vader in Empire. Good choreography, great pacing, excellent cinematography, masterful music and gripping emotional stakes. Everything about it is amazing. Can't say that for any PT or ST duel.

The sequel duels are like 2 Down syndrome kids fighting over a grilled cheese.

To me personally it's how slow the movements are. Yeah in prequels the movements are sometimes a bit too fast, but is recent movies they are way too slow, the blades touch each other like every four seconds. I don't care about the form or the "baseball bat", but the slowness is what makes them boring to me

I really feel the lack of passion/investment from the actors into the star wars universe. The most legendary moments from this franchise has always shown through when people such as Sam Witwer (Starkiller) puts the knowledge and passion into their performance, or Ewan's excitement in learning. These new ones feel devoid of that grabbing at random actors playing arbitrary characters.

Just to clarify, can everyone agree here that the prequels were *never* bad? Flaws, yes. But downright bad? Because I’ve heard the argument many times that the prequels are only good now because of the sequels. Which is not true. The prequels were never bad films. They have not changed in the decades they have been around. And if you don’t think they are masterpieces then fine. But a masterpiece I think is a subjective term. Because if you’re going to say a masterpiece is something without flaws. Then you can’t say that about the original trilogy. Because the original trilogy even has flaws, but they’re still great films.

Honestly I think the show was good but Sabine definitely is kinda just like a weak link, ezra is better than normal I relate to ahsokas depresson in the begining and she’s still cool, hera is chill, the villains are awsome and yuang and chopper are hilarious. Sabine feels like she just dosent belong, I kinda wish she died in the finale giving her jet pack(which she should of had anyway) to ahsoka so she can get on the ship, and had ahsoka and ezra leave the ship to find luke, that should of been the ending in my opinion

I think you missed the oportunity to clarify how Obiwan won vs Maul when Maul clearly had "THE HIGH GROUND".. Other than being a huge plot hole for the Anakin vs Obi fight.

You know it would've been kind of cool if Obi-Wan had a green lightsaber at the beginning of episode 1 and Qui-Gon had a blue one. Then the Maul scene would've ended with Obi-Wan defeating him with a blue laightsaber, his master's lightsaber and then we could've had the lightsaber Obi-wan always uses in subsequent movies (including the original New Hope) have been his master's lightsaber. I know there's this whole "build your own lightsaber" lore stuff, but I think that would have some additional emotional weight to it. But idk. Just a random thought i suddenly had.

Can I just point out that even in LEGO games, lightsaber duels were better executed? Not just because in every case, the level isn’t just fighting the target, but also the combat itself? The lightsaber swinging animations were masterfully done, and some like Mace Windu and Darth Maul actually had unique animations, which makes sense given their unique fighting styles in canon.

Great points. I alsp love how prequel films have these environments where if they fall they die. Every wide shot shows that danger. Rey and Kylo wode shots show a nice window you can look through!

I still dont know why the prequels are bashed for being bad movies. Absoloutely loved them over the original triology and the sequels. They were the pinacle of star wars filmmaking.

I completely agree about the Obi-Wan vs Maul fight being the best. I think after that, because there was such a good response to it, they went more and more into dance choreography than actual fights. So many twirls and strikes that aren't meant to actually cause damage but just look cool. The Obi-Wan vs Maul fight, almost every strike is trying to end the fight, but Episode 2 & 3, especially the Obi-Wan vs Anakin fight we were all waiting for, a lot of it is just junk strikes meant to look cool but don't actually accomplish much. That's what annoyed me the most about that fight, and caused it to go on for too long in my mind. It's hard to make a cool fight last that long where every strike feels intentional and dangerous, but it is possible and I wish they had leaned more on the Maul fight for all future lightsaber fights than whatever they decided to do afterwards.

For me personally, as a casual star wars fan, i enjoyed pretty much all of the duels. When i first watched star wars and when i first saw the duels, i was really hyped because it looked so cool and honestly, for enjoyment, i like all the duels from all three trilogies. But to be blunt and talk about choreography and emotions, the prequel duels were the best, especially the Mustafar duel between Anakin and Obi Wan.

Darth maul litterally just stands therevand watches obi jump over top of him and doesn't strike. It made Maul the dumbest person to ever weild a lightsaber. I hate all three of those movies.

Imo anakin vs obi-wan is the best not obi-wan vs maul. But i see why you like it the most and i respect it.

Gonna re-watch this after I finish re-watching Daredevil... the only complaint I ever heard was it moved slow, but I'll take long episodes with world/character building over short stories that jump all over the place and have no stakes
