So many people have the idea that they need to sound like a Native Speaker when learning Portuguese. Chances are that you never will - but it is okay if you don't. But getting understood should be your main goal. If you have a bit of an accent, that is normal.

I havea southern accent from the US, i wonder how my accent will come through speaking Portuguese lol. I don't expect to completely get rid of my accent but my goal is to become good enough that Portuguese people say " damn her Portuguese is good"
You may find that it could help for some things. My Liverpool accent helped a lot. I have to say that I love the Southern Twang :) I do declare! If you base it on imitating it can work wonders, not just words either but whole sentences. I heard a lot of spoken Portuguese all the time and that is what helped. Take a look at some of the stories I posted.
So funny 😂. I'm a português speaker, i don't alot opportunity to practice my english skills, almost none to be honest, but surely my accent would be horrible, especially if i try to speak british enlgish. But after all, i think that only the listening is quite challenging and i'm glad i could be able to understand british accent too
Sometimes Portuguese will tell straight away I am English but a lot of the time they are very surprised. We all have an accent to a degree. My Accent in English is from Liverpool.
You have inspired me!
@@Solo50plus if there are any subjects you would like to see covered please let me know. 😊
Very helpful
I want to learn European portuguese because my family is from continental Portugal. I understand it but need to speak it better.
There are lots of videos on this channel. YOu should take a look at my website too, there are some interesting options on there. portugueseinsixweeks.com/
Great stuff Amanda - what was the grammar book you used back inthe day?
@@thesmithsmaf it was called teach yourself Portugueses. (1989 edition) My on-line courses are based onthe same style. Take a look at the links in the description

Isto é optimo!
Olá Amanda - Very inspiring and many excellent tips - I moved to Soajo, northern Portugal from Brighton Uk a few months back - I am enjoying learning the language - What was the grammar book you used? Muito obrigado - Maf
It was actually a very old "Teach Yourself Portuguese" Book. By a lady called Manuela Cook.
Small world... 🇬🇧 🇵🇹 Londoner here about 40 mins from where you are in the North
In your example: Eu troquei essa blusa "por" estas calças, why wouldn't it be pelas?
Hi Susan. It would only be 'pelas' if I said 'for the trousers' and not 'for these trousers'. We do not contract 'por' with 'estas' (these) only with 'o/a//os/as' (the). E.g. 'Troquei a blusa pelas calças' - I swapped the shirt for the trousers. I hope that helps.
@@speakeuropeanportuguese Yes, thank you!
Looks Like in French ??
@@moewaxx2792 in some ways it is very similar.
Very nice explained and would love to watch more video regarding Portuguese grammar, love from India.
I've been studying Portuguese for about a year..at a slow pace. ..and that was the most useful explanation I've heard about the verb 'haver'. Obrigado!
Thanks a lot for your feedback. Feel free to share and show others who are struggling.
Você?
Você is the same conjugation as 'ele'. ele é; ela é, você é - When reciting the verbs we will do it as in the video. You can practicing saying as I wrote it in this comment to get used to the conjugations though. If you find that easier.
@@speakeuropeanportuguese thank you
Thank you
@@Mon_tag. De nada :)
Thanks broski for sharing hi😊 To the lady making the videos: I like literal translations rather or as well as translations of the meaning, but that's just my style of learning to understand root words better
WOW! When I saw your video title I was very doubtful. While I've learned quite a bit since I arrived in Porto nearly two years ago, I am in no way fluent yet in speaking. I can read quite well, follow spoken conversations decently and I'm told I can spell Portuguese better than many Portuguese people. But the actual speaking part is still difficult. AND, I have a Portuguese partner who speaks English and prefers to speak to me in English, which doesn't help my progress. I am not complaining, rather, I am inspired by you and thank you for making this video. You've lit a fire under my arse to do what it takes to become fluent in spoken Portuguese. Muito origado!
Thank you for you comment. So glad that you feel inspired to push through and continue learning. You will get there!
Vey good thankyou.
Glad you enjoyed it! Take a look at the latest video with the differences between, Por an d Para.
Hello. I am not in a position to comment on your Portuguese except to say it sounds good to me. Do you think it is helpful to put on the English subtitles or it is more useful just to listen?
I thought you could get the captions for this automatically, but t seems not. I will see if I can change it.
Now has subs in English!
Thankyou. Apologies because I obviously wasn't very clear. I could get the subtitles on English myself but I wondered if it was best not too but to try and listen and work out the Portuguese. Thankyou for being so prompt in your reply and actions.
@@pathercberg8886 Ah. It is just that when I tried to get them, they wouldn't appear. So I uploaded them to the video. Yes it is good to just listen first and maybe even try to write what you hear. This way you are using your brain in a few ways rather than just listening, the writing can also stimulate comprehension.
Estou bem
Ola! Obrigado pelo esta video! Do you know if Bertrand ships internationally (particularly to the US)? And how easy/difficult to navigate their website? Obrigado!
I think they might. Take a look at the website.

Oui .
I knew De followed Gostar but I didn't know beyond that. When you spoke of contractions my ears popped up. This explains when reading I see do or da but didn't know why, so very helpful. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What is menino, menina replaced with if the person is an adult?
Menino means little boy. Menina would be little girl. For adults you can still use menino/menina or just their name.
Aprendi muito mais vocabulário. Aprendi o significado do festival; tão encantador. Também ditei (escrevi) enquanto falava. Vou repeti-la uma e outra vez. Grande lição de aprendizagem. Muito obrigado.

Que gato travesso!
😆
Obrigada.
Uau!!! 🤩 Incrível. Tens uma voz tão linda 💘
I hear that taking a class with 150 hours is enough for the nationality, is that still valid?
It can depend on the rate you learn. Some people may take longer and some maybe not as long. Are you currently taking lessons?
Hola, did you say that you've been living in Portugal for 33 years and just now decided to get your A2?
Yes I did. Long story. Now I am able to try and get citizenship. My life here has been somewhat complicated up until now. It isn't all beaches and cocktails.🙂
É engraçado perceber como o português br se difere do português pt. Se pergunto no Brasil “quanto é?” Não é necessário o “por favor”. Mas o “obrigado”, “obrigada” é de muito boa educação e deve ser usado! No Brasil as vezes a entonação remete a educação.
Oi eu falo português do Brasil
Aprende-se muito Português com novelas brasileiras :)
I want to learn Portuguese from you.
Liked the way how you teach.
This is great Amanda! I need to listen again to count the semanas! Topics about every day life, things we might need to use. Ate proxima!
Trying to do a video a day. I have other plans too....
First time I listen to you and I really like it! I would suggest to vary the topics a lot, from history to geography to daily routines and recounts of, maybe, unusual things that happened to you, funny things, serious ones…One small thing that bothers me, as I still need to listen intently to understand, is the music. It interferes with what you’re saying -for me. Thank you very much for all this! 👍🏼🙏🏼
