Empire Fowey 1956
My father, Malcolm Delingpole finished his time in the RAF serving in Hong Kong as a linguist and wireless operator in 1956 and returned on the troop ship Empire Fowey (pronounced "Foy" as in the Cornish town) in the company of the returning Army garrison, the Staffordshire Regiment. They stopped off at several ports on the way home, including Cape Town and Dakar. He and I talk through the 8mm colour footage, and at 89 his memory is remarkably good considering this was nearly 70 years ago. I hope you enjoy this snapshot of different era.

Macau Grand Prix 1955
zhlédnutí 4,9KPřed 2 měsíci
In 1955, while serving in Hong Kong in the RAF, and at the age of 20, my father, Malcolm Delingpole drove a Dellow Mk.V in one of the earliest Macau Grand Prix races. The Dellow was (and still is) a famous marque of car, renowned for its touring and hill-climbing abilities, the name being a conflation of "Delingpole" and "Lowe": Ken Delingpole (my grandfather) and Ron Lowe (his Works Director a...

In 1955 My father, Malcolm Delingpole was serving in the RAF in Hong Kong. His hobby at the time was motor racing and his father Ken along with his Works Director Ron Lowe, were at the time building the Mk.5 Dellow. They had one shipped out to him and he was able to compete in one of the very earliest Macau Grand Prix. Here's a teaser, a snippet of an earlier race.
Falmouth 1950

Ken, Ethel, Malcolm and Sheila. Sailing, boating and in Malcolm's case, playing with his Jetex boat, allegedly making unsuspecting boat owners think they were being torpedoed, the War being such a fresh memory. The other group is the Terry family: Norman and Josephine and their two sons John and Peter, one of whom is having their 8th Birthday at the end, it seems.
Boats at Cowes

I now have information on the who, what, where and why of some of this footage. This is from Auntie Sheila, the other family archivist: "This was all Cowes week. I don’t think I was ever there, too busy and too many yachts! No Alauna, we discovered her in Yarmouth. Grandpa liked Cowes week... The first big liner was The France, the other was Royal Yacht Britannia. Prince Philip and Charles used...
Sarpedon Trip

For a Midlands family the Delingpoles spent a lot of time on boats back before and after the War. Will await family input for a possible date on this and even which of the many "Sarpendon" ships this was.
Dudley Zoo 1939
zhlédnutí 92Před 3 měsíci
More from the Delingpole family archive of 8mm footage. It says Dudley Zoo on the box, and I'm guessing 1939 because my father looks about 4 (he was born in 1935). Those animals must have been so depressed. But then, we were all about to go to war for five years. Anyway, zookeepers in quaint uniforms, chimp's tea party, pony cart rides and performing sealions. It's all there.
Oronsay Mediterranean Cruise 1953
zhlédnutí 60Před 3 měsíci
1953 Mediterranean cruise on the ship "Oronsay", apparently a bit of a name at the time. I can see Ken and Ethel, my grandparents and a young Sheila (my aunt). Also William, Ken's father. Assuming my father was away in Hong Kong in the RAF or busy learning Mandarin at University of London. I wonder what the Aircraft Carrier is. Places visited: Palma, Barcelona, Rhodes, Istanbul, Athens, Naples,...

Footage of my Grandfather, Ken Delingpole participating in a just-post-war hillclimb at Prescott. Also there, my father Malcolm, a very young auntie Sheila and my grandmother, Ethel. You will also see Ken with Ron Lowe, who together created the Dellow marque, chatting.
Launch of Miss Delson

The launch of the Classic Power Boat, Miss Delson in Cowes in 1974 (an educated guess on the date here). Characters I've identified include Delingpoles Ken, Malcolm, Joan, a young James, with Sheila, Martin and various others.

Dick's out again. This time at the march for freedom in London on 24th April 2021. Accompanying my brother, James and other #ThirdWednesday legends this is a freedom-fighter's view of an event the BBC claimed had only 5 to 10 thousand participants at most. LOL.
SS-Mann, No.2 Machinegunner 1941

Time-lapse watercolour from the Front to Back Series showing a machinegunner from the SS-TK Infantry Regiment as they would have looked in Summer 1941 fighting in the Baltic States as part of LVI Korps under Manstein in Army Group North. A challenging painting for me, especially the camouflage zeltbahn in plane tree 3-4 pattern, and the belt of bullets. The model is a fellow re-enactor and frie...

From the Front to Back series, this SAS soldier is as he would have appeared at the Iranian Embassy siege in 1980. As with all the paintings in the series, modelled by a knowledgeable re-enactor with his own kit. Music by Multiple Lives

Thank you for posting it on You tube!❤
image sharpness 👍
Fascinating. Thanks for posting.
At 6:56 its clear that the course being sailed is NW .. which suggests the Malacca Straight , which suggests the band were in Singapore..
Good detective work.
Dudley zoo opened in 1937
Great stuff, thanks for sharing with us!
Wonderful
Wonderful film reminds me of my fathers motor racing photos of Motor racing/Autocross in Ghana in the late 50’s, similar clothes but the cars were not quite so exotic, they were mainly Triumphs and MG’s
What a lovely film. I had many happy years trialling in a Dellow. Superb cars.
Excellent!
Thoroughly enjoyed this. That crack about the Ferrari drivers wife though, lmao.
I think tact goes out the window when you're 89. 😉
@@richarddelingpole Refreshing tbh. :DD
The figures, fashions, and cinefilm remind me so much of my childhood holidays. Lovely bit of film.
Fascinating, I love old personal films. Great job of filming done by Barbara. More please!
Fascinating. Thank you. Nice to see your father's memory is so good.
I'm going to get him to do the same on the remaining films I have.
@@richarddelingpole Excellent. They are very interesting.
‘Obviously these people never thought they were going to be returned to China.’ 🙏 This is incredibly moving footage! Well done Malcolm and Dick Delingpole. 👏👏👏
Fantastic.
Awesome footage. Thanks for sharing
Excellent. Look forward to the full version.
Wonderful, both. This is significant stuff!
New Zealand here, Falmouth was the first part of England I stayed in as a visitor (in 1977). Always loved this charming place and have returned many times since. One of my most favourite places in England.
Cowes the sailing mecca. The motor boat @0:19 is a David Cheverton 18ft "Champ". my dad owns one without the cabin. Its been in the family for 50 years and is still going strong. Greetings from Gibraltar.
My father inherited it. Had many exciting fishing trips from where we kept it in Salcombe Estuary. A "chug chug" inboard engine.
@@richarddelingpole it truly is a "chug Chug" engine 1 cylinder engine, that in a GRP boat can at times vibrate your eyeballs😂. Originally it had the 8 hp Sabb engine with the Dynastat configuration, but later we changed it to the 10hp Sabb and a Bosch starter motor making starting that little bit easier.I must say you cant beat it for reliability.
Great looking launch
I have been poring over this video and Blue Funnel photos for hours, without coming to a decision on which Sarpedon. Possibly the onboard photos are not the same ship as the one shown anchored near the end of the film. Ajax most likely, although it was only renamed Sarpedon for a few years, in 1957?
She's certainly a 'Blue Flu' Sarpedon of Alfred Holt and Company, possibly the old 1931 Ajax after renaming? The footage looks too old for her to be the 1967 renamed Denbighshire. My father sailed on the Sarpedon before he was made Master.
I have beautiful memories of time spent on the water. Fly fishing with my dad, sailing a Topper in an estuary and water skiing behind my aunty and uncles Riva in the Med. Beautiful memories. What makes me grieve inside every day is that my children are not experiencing such things. Those opportunities just are not there now. Oh, if I had the wealth and the time for sure. My immediate and extended family were never wealthy. They had passion for these things and made it happen on meagre budgets. Times were different then. My kids, as are many now are living the world through a small LCD screen. It is evil and so very wrong for humans do do this. What crazy experiment is this? Great footage.
Did you take this footage on your holly bobs?
Av Yaou bin tu Dudleeeey zoo? Ihts Bostin!
Absolutely delightful Richard, well done. Lots of Luis Vuitton luggage there ;) Only thought on Carrier is Illustrious? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Illustrious_(87)
Lovely cars just roll up your sleeves and go beautifully simple then.ThanksRichard
This came up in my recommendations and it was super to watch. What lovely motors on display there.
That was fantastic to watch, and a great legacy. Thank you for uploading.
Nice footage. That car at 0:30 was really cool.
