Dear Dani I am so happy to have discovered your podcast this week. I have been on tamoxifen for two years and have been switched to Letrozole as of a few days ago. I am terrified of the side effects. Your calm demeanor paired with your knowledgeable guests helps me calm my nerves. I have a hard time accepting that I need to take meds that harm the body in so many ways in order to prevent a recurrence. I’m only 51 and would hate to start feeling aches and pains that a much older woman might have. Frightening to say the least.

Thank you for this video. I'm one year out from my ER/PR+ stage 1 breast cancer diagnosis. I've had a lumpectomy, radiation and was prescribed tamoxifen because I'm perimenopausal (to be followed by AI's for a total of 5 years of hormonal therapy). I tried tamoxifen and only lasted 3 weeks because of the severe hot flashes and -- more concerning -- insomnia. I couldn't sleep for more than 2 hours at a time. My mom, one of her siblings, and her mother all had Alzheimer's, so I have always tried to make sleep a priority, among other things, and tamoxifen was depriving e of that. I realize it takes time for side effects to subside, but I just couldn't handle the sleeplessness, and I've read so many accounts of how that side effect never goes away for some people. My main concerns with antidepressants are the loss of libido, but more importantly, the increased risk of dementia that I've read that they can cause. If it weren't for my maternal history, I'd be more open to take antidepressants for sleep, but I think I'm more afraid of developing early onset Alzheimer's than a recurrence of cancer ... and I can't believe I'm saying that, but it's true. :(

I am a breast cancer patient ( right mastectomy) . First Dr. Mary Claire Haver has publicised the less recognized symptoms of menopause including muscle and joint pain . Women think they have arthritis when they have arthralga- joint pain with no changes on xray.Dr. Haver says 80 per cent of womenwill have joint pain and 20 percent will find it debilitating. Personally i have found that fish oil capsules ( omega threes) help because they are antiinflammatory. Good luck. I am a retired PT and sometimes gentle range of motion can help joint stiffness but be careful exercising if a joint feels raw and painful . In this case exercise canmake you feel worse. I agree with trial of antiinflammatory diet.

Basically the safest recommendation for a cancer patient is to stop alcohol. Probably one glass of champagne at a special occasion would be ok as long as every day doesnt become a special occasion.

As far as eating forcancer survivors. Alcohol is a carcinogen period . There isno safe level of alcohol, and women are especially vulnerable. Doctors should warn patients to eliminate ultraprocessed foods which are low fiber and high sugars. The American Heart Disease guidelines are for adult women keep added sugars to 25 grams or 6 teaspoons. For any packaged foods look at the nutritional label for added sugars. In Whole Foods i looked at the nutrition label and it showed 55 grams of added sugar, essentially twice my daily limit. If i was going to buy the cake i should make one portuon a half slice.

To cancer survivors who are on bisphosphonates for osteoporosis . The package insert will warn you about joint and muscle pain BUT they areonly going to tell you to take tylenol. They wont tell you that 19:07 all bisphosphonates delete the body of coenzyme q . This can be bought as a supplement . I had my first Reclast infusion with tolerable mild joint aches and pains. A year later when it was time for my second infusion the nurse said alot of people do better the second time around. Within 2 weeks i was substantially worse . I could still take care of myself, but my ability to exercise was compromised. It took me months to cind out that supplementing with coenzyme q could help. Took about 3 weeks of supplementation before i saw sustained improvement. Note i found the coenzyme q suggestion on an email nternet search. Try 2-300 mg per day.

My friend took tamoxifen and was very sorry she did. She got cancer and then died from the chemo. Her son posted her agony on facebook of all places, and I can’t I see her pain as she died. She was a previous smoker, and I’ve since learned about oxalates and would definitely incorporate a low/no oxalate diet to reduce inflammation. Sally K. Norton wrote a book about it. Doctors only think it accumulates as kidney stones, but it’s also involved with breast, colon and thyroid cancers. Do your homework ladies.

Very interesting to hear that Tamoxifen is mostly prescribed for post menopausal patients.I was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 52 just 2 years after the start of my menopause. This was in 1994. First I had a double lumpectomy but as the cancer was moving quickly about a month later I had a mastectomy. I was prescribed Tamoxifen first for 2years then it was decided it was reasonably save for 5. However with my doctors agreement I took Tamoxifen for 12 years. I am pleased that I had few side effects though I have been diagnosed with eosteopena which could be linked. However I feel very blessed that I had an excellent woman surgeon and also woman oncologist who was also excellent. I feel very blessed that I was able to see my children marry and know my lovely grandchildren. I thank the cancer team that I had and wish I could do it in person.

Excellent conversation and you shed so much light on the never-ending journey with cancer. I actually managed through the diagnosis (although I was beyond shocked to receive the news of malignant breast cancer), including multiple biopsies, MRIs, surgery, 2 staph infections, radiation and then was told I can make plans to travel and live my life. It was puzzling as I then received the information from my Oncologist that I'll have to take Aromatase Inhibitors for 5-10 years. I've been on and off Anastrozole since March 2024 and the side effects were unbearable. I felt more attached to my forever cancer than I did last year! I've been on a break from my pills but he wants me to start next week. My joints still ache, deal with insomnia, hot flashes and dread going back on the pills. Uncertainty is a good work that Dani just shared. I'm typing as I listen. I'm trying to listen to my body and if I should go back on these horrible pills or live a life of quality, knowing recurrence is a probability. I pray a lot. God will guide me and ultimately, it's my decision.

Yes, and this doctor keeps telling everybody if it doesn’t work come back and will try something else and if that doesn’t work we’ll try something else and then come back and we’ll try something else and then come back. Does anybody hear the cash register? This is exactly why I have some waiting at CVS pharmacy and why are refused to go pick them up as well as my chemo pill. I am not going through all of this not only that but on top of that there’s a verse in the Bible first Corinthians 11- through 15 that talks about a woman’s hair is her glory. God does not want to see women baldheaded this is so evil I can’t believe doctors are actually promoting this and they’re only doing it because it’s what they’ve learned in school which has been taught to them by the pharmaceutical companies. This is a big sell it’s 99% based on fear. I guarantee you I’m gonna do so much better with that having a double mastectomy followed by chemotherapy for six months followed by radiation followed by 5 to 10 years of endocrine blockers this is absolute BS. This is so much overkill. It’s unbelievable and on top of that Albert Bourla, the CEO of Pfizer that makes chemo medicine earn $33 million last year. I’ll be damned if he gets a dime of my money! Women we have to stand up to protect one another they know that we can’t figure all this out with all of this medical gobble to cope so don’t be intimidated by it they want you know it’s best when you know that you don’t want to spend even six months or even a day if you’re like feeling bad, don’t do this it’s insanity.

In light of my specific case, which was a non-aggressive, early-stage cancer, I chose to take just 10 mg of Tamoxifen to avoid potential damage to my uterus, ovaries, and liver, as well as the possibility of other dangerous issues, such as blood clots. While I wasn't overly concerned about side effects, which I had heard were manageable with a proper diet, exercise, and lifestyle, my primary concern was the potential harm it could cause my body. Now, one year in, I can say that despite the pill putting me into abrupt menopause, I have experienced only mild side effects, including hot flushes and night sweats, which are manageable. I follow a low-carb, high-protein, sugar-free, clean diet, and exercise 3 to 4 days a week, incorporating both strength exercises with weights and cardiovascular activities such as yoga, running, hiking, sprints, swimming, and so on. These lifestyle changes have helped me maintain consistent energy levels, minor menopausal symptoms, and a positive mood. I hope this will be the case in the future as well!

When they talk about side effects I think I can handle the menopause side effects brought on by these medications. I have been through menopause and know how to adapt to the mood swings, hot flashes, loss of sexual desire, and others. It is the elevated BONE LOSS, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, BLOOD CLOT RISK, HEART DISEASE risk that I am concerned about. It is the silent risks that concern me more than night sweats. The risks that can’t just be undone by quitting the medications. At 70 I am weighing heavily the risk=benefit for me personally. The only answer I get is, “We will give you stuff for bone loss & high blood pressure”. I am not interested in getting on the pharmaceutical hamster wheel to take this medication and that medication to deal with the side effect from that medication and the side effect from this side effect medication. Is the quality of my life right now worth the gamble of these hormone blockers? That is the question that I sit with personally. Anyone else relate out there to my situation?

Yes, I can relate to what you are saying. I feel the same.

I definitely can relate. I am 68 years old and was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer last year. All the treatments, surgery, radiation, staph infections stressed out my body and I think my body is in over-drive with Anastrozole. My oncologist is giving me a 3 week break but seems like the menopause symptoms, joint pains, insomnia persist. I pray this settles down so I can take the AI pills for 5 years. I am terrified of a recurrence and pray I never hear the words "you have cancer" again. Just like you, I don't want extra meds to help with side effects.

I had Arimidex for 16 months, became too debilitating, my Surgeon said stop, then said he’d write to my oncologist to plant the seed to put me on Tamoxifen, 15 months in I had a review and had a whinge re aches/pains, no symptoms but scan showed a Pulmonary Embolism, off Tamoxifen on to anticoagulant Xarelto, horrendous, caused severe spinning/wanting to blackout, scan showed a Meningioma, off to Neurosurgeon. It’s calcified. Not one medical person told me Xarelto could cause spinning out, thank god I hadn’t been driving. Oncologist was wanting me to stay on Xarelto and go back on Tamoxifen, she then suggested Exemestane. I haven’t taken it, can cause carpel tunnel and she goes oh we can treat that, no ops are not always successful. I’ve stopped the drugs. The drugs also exasperated back pain which I didn’t have before (discs/arthritis) unbearable. Just getting some relief, did not care about ménopause symptoms but the other like bone loss , clots lethal etc. A friend I’d made took Letrozole, came on hard and fast blocked duodenum, they said they got it all, Dr got a shock 25 spots on liver, pancreatic cancer and passed, another 2 ops for carpel tunnel, she’s stopped these drugs as well.Just read on another podcast a hospice nurse of 17 yrs said these Drs get money for getting you to have all these treatments, she said she’s seen it all and they do it right up till they die, follow the money!

Yes, I can absolutely relate.i had to stop hormone replacement when I was diagnosed with breast cancer ( I unfortunately had a previously undiagnosed genetic vulnerability) . The withdrawal from hormones was brutal with not even moral support from docs/ nurses. I could not bring myself to take the aromatase inhibitors because I assumed any side effects would be met with the same indifference. Look me you im concerned about the damage to bones, brain and heart. The medications for osteoporosis have added to my problems causing bone and joint pain. The docs tend to be more responsive to complaintz that will kill you. Like you I don't want to take medications to 🎛️ l the side effects of another medicine.

@@lindajones4849These are such tough decisions. Wish I had a crystal ball to see how I’d manage without AI pills.

My oncologist told me that PREDICT was “old science “ and the ONCOTYPE SCORE now makes PREDICT scores obsolete. Can anyone speak to this? Thank you for any insight.

Oncotype provides a score that can give you insight as to if chemo will help or not ( for me my score was 11 and they told me under 20 is good over 20 chemo was recommended.). Also stated it would provide an indicator of reoccurrence which I haven’t been told anything about that thank you for the reminder I’m going to ask for my report

Re brain fog, I was 40 when I hit early menopause. I had severe BF for 7 years, however going keto and giving up sugar, including fruits, totally changed my life. I only mention it in the hope my experience will help someone else xx
