I'm surprised by how little things have changed since my freight hopping days in the mid 90s. Things like checking the springs to see if a car is loaded; constantly listening and preparing for changes; and waiting an average of seven hours for a ride (and once for 22 hours, heading north out of Klamath Falls, OR). One thing I would like to echo from this video is how incredibly dangerous freight hopping is if you don't know what you're doing. Dangling your legs out of an open boxcar and watching the scenery pass by sounds great until you cross a bridge with a 4-inch clearance between wall and the train, ripping your legs and you off. Or settling into a cozy spot in the back of a boxcar filled with stacked pipes and then getting perforated when the weight shifts.
