Te Arawhiti ki Matangi Āwhio
A much-anticipated new bridge spanning Saltwater Creek opened last week with a dawn ceremony.
Named Te Arawhiti ki Matangi Āwhio, the bridge replaces the previous one near the Trafalgar Centre, providing an essential connection to the Maitai shared pathway for pedestrians and cyclists and ensuring safe and easy access for tamariki to Auckland Point School.
The design features artwork by toi Māori artist Fayne Robinson and is made up of alternating triangular panels, the wheku and the kōwhaiwhai, which acknowledge the eight iwi of Te Tauihu.
"The wheku represents a dimensional presence of ngā iwi,” Fayne says.
“And the kōwhaiwhai design represents the area through mahinga kai (traditional food gathering sites and practices). It connects to the water and the land, acknowledging this ancient site and its significance to the tribal wellbeing through food provision."
The previous bridge, built in the 1980s, was corroded, its steel beams delaminated, and its wooden components rotted.
Te Arawhiti ki Matangi Āwhio is 13.28 metres long and 3.75m wide. Its structure is a single span steel warren truss with a hardwood deck for increased durability, and the steel trusses have been sealed to protect against corrosion. The project was completed to the budget of $630,000.

It's now almost 3 years since I attempted to read a Public Forum to an open meeting of the Nelson City Council. In this modern age Council Meetings are filmed and filed on CZcams so people who choose not to attend a meeting in person can witness later how Councillors behave. Viewers can see how Mayor Reese interrupts my 5 minute presentation for a variety of reasons. Like her opinion that I am being disrespectful to Council Staff, that Council Meetings are not the appropriate forum, that I am not allowed to revisit a statutory process which has already reached a decision, that Councillors are not allowed to be involved in regulatory matters, etc, etc. So my 5 minute public forum blows out to 27 minutes of Council meeting time. Last Thursday 13 February 2020, Mayor Reese again tries to close down a public Forum by Environmental Lawyer Sue Grey. Mayor Reese attempted to do the same thing to 81 year old ex Nelson City Councillor Kerry Neal late last year. Kerry Neal was an elected member of the Nelson City Council (NCC) for 12 years (1977 to 1989). Surely he would know what is allowed to be said at a public forum? For several years now local Newspapers have reported on a culture of bullying within the NCC. It looks like our Mayor is bullying our Councillors as well as concerned members of the public like myself, who give up our time to speak at public forums. It is clear that the present Nelson City Council thinks it is a law unto itself and is not answerable to the citizens of Nelson whose rates pay their wages and whose elected representatives (Councillors) are supposed to govern. This non democratic thinking by NCC is now common in other Councils around New Zealand and in Central Government. It seems we now have Council dictatorships pretending they are democratic. Be careful who you vote for in the September elections.

The issue is if the public are allowed in the workshop then turn the video on, not how council can keep people from attending which everyone seems so concerned about. How about worrying about how to include the people not exclude them.
