Another song from a 1956 jam at my house with John Hartford & Paul Briedenbach. I want to note here that we were all huge bluegrass fans at this time. Most of these tunes in the jam were Bill Monroe songs but John's big mentor was Earl Scruggs. He was the president of the Flatt & Scruggs Midwest fan club at the time.

Another jam at my house sometime in 1956. John would have been 18 years old. I thought he was really good on the banjo even way back in the 50sw.

This was from a jam at my house sometime in 1956. The photo wasn't at my house. It was taken a few years before I met John. I'm sorry I don't know the origin of the photo.

Jimmy Martin doesn’t believe in Santa Claus”
Vassar Clements ruined every fiddle player in Nashville.
Listen how he talk lol 😅😅😅
O frisco darling lol lol shute😅😅😅
"We gotta finish before that clerking fellow returns". 😅 I just love the episodes when the Darlings were present. 🤠
Was this at Cherokee farms cause if it was I was there
I would say the mandolin player would either be Earl Taylor (but this looks to be taller than him) or maybe Monroe Fields with it being the mid 60's. Curly Seckler left the band some time in 1962. I believe that the mandolin player is Monroe Fields.

Lovely.
I like John's version of Lorena
Loved by both sides in the Civil War. The years creep slowly by, Lorena The snow is on the grass a gain The sun's low down the sky, Lorena The frost gleams where the flowers have been But my heart beats on as warmly now As when the summer days were nigh The sun can never dip so low Or down affections cloudless sky A hundred months have passed, Lorena Since last I held that hand in mine And felt the pulse beat fast, Lorena Though mine beat faster far than thine A hundred months, 'twas flowery may When up the hilly slope we climbed To watch the dying of the day And hear the distant church bells chime We loved each other then, Lorena More than we ever dared to tell And what we might have been, Lorena Had but our loving prospered well But then, 'tis past, the years are gone I'll not call up their shadowy forms I'll say to them, lost years, sleep on Sleep on, nor heed life's pelting storms The story of that past, Lorena Alas I care not to repeat The hopes that could not last, Lorena They lived, but only lived to cheat I would not cause them one regret To rankle in your bosom now For if we try, we may forget Were words of thine long years ago Yes, these were words of thine, Lorena They burn within my memory yet They touched some tender chords, Lorena Which thrill and tremble with regret 'Twas not thy woman's heart that spoke Thy heart was always true to me A duty, stern and pressing, broke The tie which linked my soul with thee It matters little now, Lorena The past is in the eternal past Our heads will soon lie low, Lorena Life's tide is ebbing out so fast There is a future, o, thank God Of life this is so small a part 'Tis dust to dust beneath the sod But there, up there, 'tis heart to heart
This is back when they still had a good sound man[PA] at Bean Blossom.
Charlene (Maggie Peterson) sure could render! Wonder what Dud would be saying?
I doubt there is a set of lips around with that much versatility
Awesome Awesome
Is Vassar using a pick? He's so loud!
I need the name of the song😅please
and shows right here!
Came here from watching the Andy Griffith show bc after 57 years i suddenly MUST KNOW RIGHT NOW if _”Slimy River Bottom”_ is really a *THING* or just made up for the show back then? .. _googlegoogle_ .. ah! so badly wanted it to be .. YAY it’s a *_THING!!_* 🎉🥳 🥂🍾 🤟🏻🕊️💕
Needed a bass.
a few thoughts...the way John is playing the banjo at the beginning...it is what I would call "whamming"...a term the Pete Seeger used (I think)...and what is it with the myriad of instruments...mostly banjos...on the stage? Did John actually use all those for this show?
Pizzicato beyond compare.
Rather hear New Grass Revival do it.
OK...can we agree to disagree on that? I remember Sam Bush telling how the NGR would listen to Aeroplane...a lot...and that Sam considered it to be the first "newgrass" album...that John...and this band and their work...were the inspiration for NGR
Supernatural fiddle by Vassar Clements.
I lpve the darlings
They were phenomenal; a really fun band.
This is my favorite video on the internet. The way John looks into Vassar's eyes and sings it like a love song about marijuana is truly amazing. Vassar is the greatest fiddle player to ever live and watching him pick without a bow in this video solidifies that claim.
The Dillard's are the best 💜
Lord have mercy what Vassar playes @23:15 is so lonesome sounding.
This video is a treasure!
Charleen Darling. Maggie Peterson had a wonderful singing voice. I seen the Darlings years ago I believe on the Merv Griffin show. Maggie Anderson also performed very good voice. RIP Maggie
Loved. Lesters voice,The Grandma who raised me was huge Flatt and Scruggs fan. So I was a huge fan.
really good
I like the show when andy played his guitar and sang.❤❤❤

Stormy me call.
He is 100% on point with his assessment of River vs Railroad vs Highway transportation. Every word is the truth.
I knew Wade when we both lived in Chicago. Last time we spoke I was preparing to move to Los Angeles, and he was moving to Alaska. Nice to see him again, thanks for sharing. 😊
John was born in the wrong century.
