Rachmaninoff-Namoradze: Adagio from Symphony No. 2, Op. 27 | Nicolas Namoradze
Rachmaninoff-Namoradze: Adagio from Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27
Nicolas Namoradze, piano
Recorded live at the International Keyboard Institute and Festival, NYC, July 2023
Get the score at: muse-press.com/en/product-tag/nicolas-namoradze-en/
The premiere of Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 in 1908 cemented his reputation as one of the leading symphonists of his time, and to this day the work remains among his most celebrated musical statements. The third movement, Adagio, is emblematic of many features that define his compositional language, including enchantingly expansive melodies, a rich harmonic palette, searing climaxes and lush, full textures.
While adhering strictly to the thematic and harmonic material of the original, this arrangement is less a strict transcription and more a reimagining of the movement for the piano, taking a generally liberal approach with reworking the textures in order to create a pianistically idiomatic piece. The piano writing is informed both by Rachmaninoff’s compositional style as well as my own approach to keyboard texture.

Hello! I'm enjoying your arrangement in South Korea. I'd like to play this song. Where can I get the score?
Thank you very much! You can get the score in both download and hard copy versions from the Muse Press website, you'll find the link in the video description.
They haven't composed this good of piano music in a long while.
Please please please! Where did you get the sheet music? I’m trying to figure out how to find sheet music for the “Fragments” but there is unfortunately not one copy of music on the entire internet, including IMSLP. I may have to go to my university library, but doubt they will have such pieces. Do I need to go straight to England? lol
There's a site called Piano Rare Scores - they have a collection of Bowen's piano music available for download that includes the Fragments!

There ist a wonderful concentration in the way you play. You're really, really there for the music! A great joy, thanks very much!
Thank you so much!
As a huge fan of Rachmaninoff I had to stop and comment that this is one of the most amazing arrangement there has ever been. Thank you for uploading such a beautiful performance, you are truly a blessed artist :)
Many thanks for your very kind words!
The saddest thing....that Rachmaninov isn't alive to have heard you play that.....
That's kind of you!
I found myself constantly increasing the volume to hear the detail, and the control in the final section is beautiful.
Thank you!
I performed Moon, Refracted for a jury and it was very well received, looking forward to giving this a try. Just got the digital version, learning some new Japanese vocab as well, thank you very much for this
Glad to hear, many thanks for performing it!
Mesmerizing.....thank you for that ....and for the link
Thanks so much!
Bravos all around 👏 👏 👏
Many thanks!
miraculous transcription! I bought the score from muse press and have been practicing for several weeks The 3 hand section is very difficult but matchless I would like to know if you work on other works.
Thank you very much! This is my first arrangement, and will certainly not be my last :) Muse Press has also just published a related work of mine, "Memories of Rachmaninoff's Georgian Song".
Beautiful! I love the way it inventively combines themes too! Unbelievably gorgeous. Was privileged to hear you perform it live in San Jose for the Steinway Society last month!
Thank you so much!
I know I'm late to the party, but this is masterful work from the pianist, conductor, and orchestra. I so appreciate this approach to Brahms...total emotional investment.
Thank you very much!
i like the left hand notes at 1:53, no idea why so many pianists don't emphasize the 3 notes at the end, bravo!
A masterful performance!
Thank you!
Nicholas, this really is gorgeous, the best arrangement i have heard of it yet. very pianistic and you have a very delicate touch. Thank you and God bless you.
Thanks so much!
This man has inherited the soul of a poet.
Thank you!
Wonderful Rachmaninov !!! suuuuuuuuuper transcription !!! /// BIG LIKE !!!
Thank you very much!
That was edge-of-your-seat breathtaking. Thank you for changing the quality of this day...
Many thanks!
One of the most impressive piano performance ever!!! Did it take you long to develop your left hand to that level?
Many thanks! It did take some practice, though this was actually my first time performing the piece :)
Great performance! I'm thinking of learning this etude simply for the sake of training my left hand. How do you think this study is in terms of training your technique? I found the normal thirds etude really helpful to my right hand technique. Would this have the same impact on my technique but for my left hand?
Thanks! Sure, working on this Etude will certainly help develop dexterity in the left hand. I’ve shared some practice approaches that might be useful in responses to other comments here.
How in earth can thirds sound so light
Thanks! Takes practice :)
Wonderful, wonderful playing from all five artists, but dreadful camera work.
like like like !!!!!!!!!
Suuuper Bach....excelent precision and sound......... congratulations !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you!
Wow, that was so god damn messy. Perhaps nobody, (not even Hamelin), can play it at ideal tempo and steadiness of the original, but that is the goal, and surely, this piece is similar enough to the original that that is ideally how it should played. So, I dislike.
Dommage que ce soit si bien interprété et dirigé, mais la vidéo reste quand même un peu sombre.
Beautifully played and conducted 🙏💛
Thank you very much!
J'aime autant vos interprétations pianistiques que vos compositions. Merci pour les deux.
Merci beaucoup!
Many thanks for that wonderful romantic interpretation. Yes Bach can be romantic ! In fact, he can be everything human imagination wants him to be. Bravo maestro Namoradze.Have you recorded any others JSB' works ?
Thank you very much! You can also find the Sinfonia BWV 795 here on CZcams as well as Spotify and other streaming services, and I plan to record more Bach in the near future.
Esto un Bach romantico..? inexpresivo, duro, veloz. sin matizes..no entiendo que es loque oyen

Love this piece and have spent a lot of time with it over the past month… A question though- in measure 41, 3rd note, Nicolas plays an A where a C is printed… Wondering if anyone has clarification on this :)
Glad you're enjoying it, and well done for noticing this detail :) This spot was revised before publication in 2020, C is correct, the A is an earlier version. Hope this helps!
Amazing!
Thank you. It is beautiful to see the structure of the piece coalesce as you perform.
Many thanks!
It doesn't get any better. What a fabulous musician and pianist. When it seems you are listening to something you know well for the first time, it says it all. Reminds me of Leschetizky's comment to the young Schnabel. "My pupils are pianists. You are a musician".
Many thanks for the kind words!
Another pianistic giant. He brings an ethereal tactile element to the piano that is mesmerizing. Just discovered this artist, and don't know why he isn't better known. Just sublime artistry on another scale.
Thank you so much!
Marvelous
Thank you!
He has it all. What a delight.
Thank you very much!
Wonderful to hear music of this complexity performed by the composer. A gift for posterity.
Thank you very much!
Wonderful
Thank you!
These are the sounds I hear in my head, how'd you manage to do that is incredible! I love this so much, you're a genius.
Many thanks for your kind words!
This is fantastic the dynamics are insane! What's wild to me is (lemme preface this first) I play and write piano music, now for the past several years I've been stuck like an endless loop of playing and "trying" to write, but I only seem to produce things in this vein. Like a schizophrenic decent into my own madness, and the erratic key changes, mood shifts, and uncertainty is all consuming. I just need to write parts of it down, it's becoming increasingly harder due to how it's all blending together as days pass. Idk what to make of it, or what to settle on, any suggestions?
Thank you! A wonderful idea I learnt from my teacher John Corigliano about the compositional process is to first draw out the whole dramatic narrative of a piece-namely, the structure, story, the overarching journey you want to take your listener on. You could sketch this without any specific musical material, rather just using symbols, shapes and colors in any sort of expressive graph, which would describe the flow, intensity, dynamics, textures and so forth. This would be akin to an architect first planning out the larger structures of a building. Once you've got that, then you can fill in that story with the details: the specific notes and gestures to make that narrative come alive. I think this approach might be helpful with the questions you're facing, it might organize and direct all this musical material into a clearer and more focused conception that you'll already have formed.
The second I would call "the dance of the two spiders" 🕷 (look at the hands!) Very beautiful music, but pianist music. Not so original as Messiaen, Feldman or Boulez. Like a modern Godowsky, very effective, but without real invention. A kind of music which has its followers, no question, but it seems to me more a beginning than a target. Excuse me!
eine in der Tat superbe Interpretation
Vielen Dank!
