I started this channel early in 2020 when there was a lot of chaos, stress, and despair in the world. I hoped to add some positivity to the world at the same time as encouraging what I think are some healthy activities.
I have always gotten a lot of joy from gardening and learning about edible and medicinal plants. I looked for information specific to my area and found lot of foraging channels on CZcams, but they weren't quite what I was looking for. I had also thought about trying to to put together a book about the plants that I am learning about, but I though a video format would be the best way to share the information.
I hope that these videos are interesting and that people learn something from them and that I can help people to become more interested in growing their own food and developing a better appreciation for nature around us!

It smell like lemon ? Thank you
Can you be my dad in my next life? What a guy!
Gorgeous flowers. I think the leaves look very similar to a celery's leaf.
Thank you! Very descriptive.
You're welcome! Thank you, too!
This is a great video on identifying the second year plant. I've always been leary about making a possitive id myself. But you broke it down so well I feel way more confident now. Thank you. But what about the first year plants? Do they have the little hairs also? Or is it possible to mistake them for some of the poisonous look alikes?
Thank you! A lot of the same ID points will apply like smell, shape of the leaves, and little hairs on them. For me, the smell is a key identifier, and the fact that they look just like a carrot that's grown in a garden. I hope that helps.
@@OkanaganGardenerandForager thanks again I'm pretty sure we have some growning on our property here in the Minnesota Arrowhead. 🤞
@@Dlcjr08 I had a hard time with this one, too. I've actually been looking at them for a few years in all different growth stages to feel more confident. I think it's sometimes not easy to be sure!
can it be used as a poultice?
Cool, thank you! Listening to my parents growing up, you'd think everything that couldn't be bought at the grocery store was horribly toxic and would cause agonizing death if touched or consumed. I'll have to give this a try next time we're at the beach. Just have to avoid the dog tinkle...
Oh my lord... I have had catnip growing in my kitchen for years for my cats!!! I had no idea it could help my bad back or sleep issues!!!
I think it's a great plant to have around for lots of reasons!
"Wild" prickly lettuce might be edible but is toxic and called poor man's opium. Be careful! Pu a leaf down off the stem to find white sap pre seed stage and One bitter taste on your fingertip to tongue should bring a smile.
there are too many plants that look like dandelion !!!
I have so Much plantain in yard that I’m going to dehydrate some and can a bunch! Not sure how it will work but gonna try it.
I hate perennial sow thistle, well I hate the way the roots run and spread in the soil and it's hard to remove them call because they break so easily. I did not though know about eating the flowers, will give it a try! :)
Nice! It's something, and maybe it will help stop some seeds from spreading.
@@OkanaganGardenerandForager But, it's those dang Canadian thistle that are truly the worst miserable buggers, hard to eradicate when a patch has become established!
"Taste fresh, and I don't know, leafy" 😂😂❤❤😂😂
Catnip smells like Marijuana 😊
I could see that. Thank you!
@6:15 "Apparently their quite popular with pigs" - smile (why the smile?)
I'm not sure. I think I was imagining a group of pigs talking about the kinds of food they like or something like that, haha!
I think its time i give this plant a try. Its growing all over my property this year. Thanks for the videos i really enjoy them and learn something new every time i watch them.
You're welcome! Thank you, too! Sometimes I think plants that might be good for us kind of find us. Good luck!
@@OkanaganGardenerandForager thanks again. Yeah, I also have never seen so many sweet clovers growing near me. I mean wow! Do you have a video on that? I'll search your channel but I usually don't have good luck searching...not terribly good at finding good videos. Lol.
Mullein is invasive in North America. If you see it, pull it up.
Plantain was one of the herbs in the poultice that saved my grandads leg from gangrene.
Wow! That's good to hear. Thanks!
@@OkanaganGardenerandForager the poultice was after maggots, wet to dry honey pulls ,and the poultice had more than just the plantain . Just to be more clear . I know most of the ingredients as theyve been handed down since before the united states happened. I have the fiddle grandad carved with a jackknife at 12 . He stabbed his leg . 1904 circa .
@shawntailor5485 that's a pretty cool story!
If its flowering. What do you do?
You could still use it when it's flowering, but the lives might just be less potent. Also you could use the flowers. Thank you!
Merlin grows everywhere in Missouri
Apparently also good for gastric issues and even stomach cancer.
Thank you!
It is also a mosquito repellant. This is one of the reasons that cats like to roll in it. They are rubbing the sap onto their fur.
Thank you!
Oh wow!! That a great thing to know!!
It looks like a Dandelion to me ...
Yes, there are some similarities for sure! Thanks!
Looks like Latuca seriola, also theoretically edible, and has white flowers. I encountered that species as a noxious weed and became obsessed, growing to hate the plant.
Yes, I agree it does look similar. Thanks!
Wow! Cool
I think so! Thanks!
I have a lot of common burdock growing in my yard so I wanted to know what it was good for before I rip it out. Thanks for the info!
You're welcome! Thank you, too!
If you want more info about sow thistles, check out this full length video! czcams.com/video/qPp6t-L8Nfc/video.html
Soil compaction issue?
Maybe? What makes you say that?
Where can I find the seeds in my plant??? Will come from the flowers?
Yes, they'll come from the flowers.
I’m a heavy smoker cannabis always chesty especially when it comes to bed time yesterday I smoked some leaf and later that day my nose and chest fully cleared woke up this morning with no mucus on my chest
That's awesome! Thank you for sharing!
Hopefully I won't end up with a desire to use a litter box.
Haha! Yes, me too!
@@OkanaganGardenerandForager LOL
😂😂😂😂
Also a lookalike to multiple dangerous plants so I reccomend only foraging this after learning a lot about plants and probably also taking a foraging class
Looks like chiggers
There are lots of toxic look alike. Should warn people
Thank you for doing your part to warn people!
I rescued a pet bunny with severe anxiety, this plant helped my furry fellow to leave them axiety attacks behind him. He ate a handfull of leaves twice a day for 3 weeks. The result was unbelievably positive!
That's amazing! Thanks for sharing!
@@OkanaganGardenerandForager No problem, have a nice day.
@@gazepskotzs4 you too!
Thanks for sharing
You're welcome! Thank you, too!
I cut my goldenrod back because after it bloomed, the long stem was dying from top to bottom, so I trimmed it and it has not grown a long stem to bloom since. Any suggestions on how to get it to bloom again?
I'm not sure. It might be that it's done now for the season and will bloom again next year. Otherwise I'd do things like make sure it's well watered and isn't being crowded out by other plants to try to give it good growing conditions.
Cat mint?
I'm pretty confident this one's catnip - Nepeta cataria. Some people might call it cat mint.
@@OkanaganGardenerandForager yep... I don't what the hell they're selling at Petco.. Looks like grass.
Thanks for your comments. I noticed my flowers are completely white//no single red or any other color flower in the center. Thanks again. Love your videos!
You're welcome! Thank you, too!
I found them growing in the gravel outside my home. Thinking they were weeds, I pulled them. When I pulled them, I usually found ants and tunnels, so I kept pulling. them
I like to say they're weeds if you don't want them.
Thank you for the info
You're welcome! Thank you, too!
Make a 10 x oil and you can see b7gs bunny, leprechauns and rainbows. 😊
That sounds interesting!
I too thought of using my veggie spinner to dry stuff. Thanks for the paper bag idea. I store bulbs in them over winter but now have a new use. My one cat loves catnip the other not so much so like us we all have our preferences.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
If she is using other teas, how would she know if the burdock tea is working?
i steep in sun for 1-2 days. no other prep. Strain , chill, enjoy
Nice and easy! Thanks!
It feeds honeybees during the off season
Yes, bees seem to like it from what I've seen.
if its so noxious...how is it that the goldfinches and other seed eaters seem to LOVE IT?
That's a good question!
@@OkanaganGardenerandForager Our horses have never touched the stuff, and I have done nothing to discourage it because of the birds. I had no idea that it wasn't native. This area was pretty wild when we bought the property and built our house and barn. The seeds for it must have come down the river along with the bloody garlic mustard, and the buck thorn shrubs. So many invasives and not many are beneficial.
@@calamityjane5698 it's really incredible how some of these plants can spread so far and wide!
Can the Floridian species also be used?
Nw Mt here. Elevation 4000+. We have beautiful fireweed also. Poultice of yarrow and plantain healed my bad rope burn right up. I have a pharmacy right out my door and no need to drive an hour to town. Besides… natural medicine works sooooo much better than anything over the counter and just as good as the rx stuff. I’m never going back! 👍🪴 Loved the intro btw!!
Awesome comment! Thank you so much!
Just found this on the mountain. Time to learn about it, make a dish and have a cup of tea! Time to look it up in a book and see what parts to tincture, if any. Off to go watch the longer video and spend the day on fire weed. 👍😊
Awesome! Good luck!
