May 6th. Day two on the homestead
zhlédnutí 139Před 8 lety
The first day was spent driving to the property and finding the access that was promised for us to use was blocked. So we had to carry EVERYTHING in. The first thing I did was build a temporary shelter in case we needed to get out of some severe weather that always seems to come in the spring. Good thing. Thunder storms and rain was the bi-weekly occur ancestors for over two months. As soon as ...

Death of an aquaponic greenhouse. Frozen wilderness.
zhlédnutí 505Před 10 lety
I left for a trip out of the country and left my greenhouse in someone else s care. They didn't understand how to keep an aquaponic greenhouse from freezing and were to afraid to ask. I came back to find my talapia frozen in three inches of ice and all the plants were equally frozen.

    Since you have a compound miter box just mark the center of the long point and make it with two compound cuts instead of making three.

    Can you clarify the last portion of the video please? Strut "B" gets cut at 12 degrees and then we line it up and cut to a point. Strut "A" gets are cut at 45 degrees on one end? do they still get lined up and cut to a point the same way? This makes a 2V dome? What is the finished diameter? Thank you!

  • @JohnGuest45

    Your joinery skills are fine, the reason the joints werent 100% perfect is you inadvertantly stressed the dome out of its natural alignment ;) A 3v dome 4/9 or 5/9 (aka 3/8 or 5/8) doesnt have a flat base so if its forced to sit flat on a kneewall the rest of the frame has to compensate which opened the joints slightly. :) Slightly altering the strut lengths of the bottom triangles in the base pentagons would result in a nice flat base. In its natural form the bottom point of the downward facing triangles between the base pentagons will sit a little higher than the base ring. You may recall a slight bow at those locations before you bolted it down to the kneewall :) Staining or painting the frame white is easier on the poly. Dark brown timber can reach a finger burning temperature in full sun, where white is cool to the touch.

    • @calbinoIa
      @calbinoIa Před 8 lety

      Thanks for the tips. However I did compensate for that very thing. I think the problem was just that I was in a hurry to finish it as well as doing it all alone. This would have been an easier project with a partner. Your right about the stain color, but if I remember correctly I had several gallons of dark stain laying around and my wife just started using that up.

  • @JohnGuest45
    @JohnGuest45 Před 8 lety

    You did a good job :) A 20ft 3v 4/9 (aka 3/8) should end up 19ft 8-1/4" in diameter and 8ft 2 -3/4" high. The reason its difficult to measure is theres 15 struts in the bottom ring so you`re measuring from a point to a flat, only the points (vertex) transcribe the spherical radius. The other twist is the absolute center point or origin of the sphere is located somewhat below the bottom ring ;)

      I just figured what ever it would be is what it would be. Hey the thing went together well. I have dismantled the whole thing and it has been in storage for a couple years. Instead of just cutting new material I am going to try and use as much of the old as possible to save costs. I want to build a new one but I think I will just put up a couple hoop houses instead to save cost. This style of greenhouse is just cool, but has little advantages over a regular hoop home. Well, not talking about winds,........

    do i need a mitre saw that goes beyond 45 degrees?

    • @calbinoIa
      @calbinoIa Před 8 lety

      +John Chapman basically yes. Otherwise you would need to make some sort of jig to make your cuts.

    • @JohnGuest45
      @JohnGuest45 Před 8 lety

      nope, most miter saws have 0 in the middle (90 degrees to the fence) and a swing of 45 degress each side.What you will need is a compound miter saw which allows the blade to be tilted so you can make the bevel cut ;) You can use a basic mitre saw (no bevel function) in a pinch by rigging a jig that puts the strut end cut vertical and at right angles to the fence. Then you only need to make the miter cuts. If you allow for the blade kerf in the jig you wont need to worry about marking the centerline, just position the wood against the correct side of the jig.

    Calvin, Can you help me a little further on the explanation. I want to build a 45ft home using this technique with 2 x 6 wood. Will this work? Do you have any plans or instructions to go by? Thanks for a great video. Johnny

    • @calbinoIa
      @calbinoIa Před 10 lety

      Johnny basically this video will work for you no matter what size of dome you build. 2x6 or what size of wood. but the bigger the size of wood potentially the bigger the size of saw you will need. Mine is a 10" saw so you may need a 12" for the 2x6. If you want to use a hubless strut as I do then make sure you USE SCREWS!!! I would also try to put a smaller one together first to gain experience framing it. It will help a lot. Also make sure you have someone to help you assemble the dome. It is just easier that's all there is to it! Make sure you figure how big you will need for plywood with a larger dome also. You will need pretty good size triangles for your 45' dome. Although you can use smaller pieces of plywood. I showed how to do that on one of my videos too. I forget the number. You may consider using a 4V dome if the triangles are too big as well. If you have anyother questions I'd be glad to comment on! Good luck

    • @johnnymaniscalco9352
      @johnnymaniscalco9352 Před 10 lety

      Calvin, I was kind of hoping you might know how to make individual triangles to assemble rather than screwing together each strut.

    • @calbinoIa
      @calbinoIa Před 10 lety

      That will probably require quite a lot more material. If you think it would be easier that way, don't be deceived. It is NOT hard to frame a dome. But it is easier with two people. Seriously, try to build a smaller dome first. But if it is too small like say an 8' dome it will be harder to build than say a 12' or 15' dome ( first hand experience on my part!! Haha!). A dome as big as you want to build is pretty ambitious so you really should start with a smaller practice dome. But I wouldn't build the triangles first to construct the dome.

    • @JohnGuest45
      @JohnGuest45 Před 8 lety

      3x as much timber :) other downsides: more time spent in the shop cutting wood and making triangles. Handling an 8ft strut is a lot easier than an 8ft triangle when your standing on a ladder :) I prefer to use tubular hubs, less cutting and its easier to assemble/disassemble the dome many times over, ideal for portable domes.

    • @calbinoIa
      @calbinoIa Před 10 lety

      Keith, if you have never built a dome before you really should try to go smaller for the first one. you could build a 20 3V and that will give you plenty of practice. A 4V will be the same thing but you will have to be very careful of all the different size struts. Label them carefully and make sure you label BOTH ENDS! I am actually putting together with my son the plan of putting out a basic how to video for hubless domes, but it simply is something that can not be easily if you want it to be good quality. (at least not for me!). Please go through my framing videos and I think they will help you some as they are now. keep me posted please, and shoot me your questions anytime! Calvin

      calvin busch Thanks for the info. Shoot me an email and I can send the floorplan I have designed for an aquaponics greenhouse. Dome structures can scale better than any other design and I cannot find anything I like that is hubless around 40 feet. as far as being the best I would say that all depends on your goals for building a dome. I have found several other dome calculators, but the desert domes . com is basic and that is all most people will need. i don't really care if they explain the vertices or what ever, I just want to know how long to cut the struts and I think that is mostly what most DIY'ers want as well.

    Thanks Critterwindow, I was thinking that since the dome is so small that the barrel would heat to much on the inside. I know it gets cold here and that may compensate for it, but I am worried that it would actually damage the plastic. There may be room inside to install the rocket mass heater, but I will build a small room outside the entrance to heat the north side. More on this theory as I get to it.

  • @TheCritterWindow
