    Nice idea,so no need for G.B just use red orange green thread and then black pen 👍🏻

    I got one of these kits [ anniversary edition ] a month ago as I felt it was a good way to start fly tying. And to be fair it has got me started and I am tying flies. However there is a lot of materials I will never use. The vice is basic but functional. In retrospect it may have been better to get a basic vice, a tool kit [ bobbin holder, whip finisher, scissors ] and the materials for a couple of flies you know you will use ; say a hares ear and a buzzer, and build on from there.

    except do not use varnish on the fly, it will dissolve the tippet material 😎

    😂Funny how his open loop casting suddenly turned into a 10 to 2 casting stroke just by cleaning his line off a bit!😂

    Dear teacher. Why did you not start to learn your pupil to make a correct back cast? Learn him to wait out the line to stretch out behind. Then, he will have precision and the length.

  • @patrickmcphee770
    @patrickmcphee770 Před rokem

    The foam grip is not going to get a good hook on a fish that took the indicator fly . Then your fighting a fish as it slides down to the tippet ring? I don’t even need to try it. tie off the bend, if you need a longer tippet, clip it off and toe another on, it’s not that complicated.

    John was rushing his back cast too (at the beginning, not sure towards the end couldn't get a good enough look at his line), I bet he was getting tons of windknots

    Over the years I’ve learned some tricks to cleaning fly lines that have served me extremely well. One of the key tips I learned from Bruce Richards (past 3M fly line guru) and Simon Gawesworth (Rio line guru) and that is, avoid dish detergents. They say it leaches the plastizers and eventually slows the line and helps it pick up dirt. I use Ivory bar soap (a pure soap, not a detergent. I walk around the house stripping off line and laying around the house. I them wet a clean wash cloth and get the soap on it and walk around the path of the line while picking it up to wipe with the soapy cloth then do the same with a cloth with clean rinse water. It cleans the line gently and quite thoroughly. If it’s one of the many newer lines that have the slickness built into the line to the core, another great and highly effective way to clean of of those lines is to use the 3M micro-abrasive pad or Rio Wonder Cloth. These take a microscopic bit of the coating off to reveal a new, slick and dry finish to the line making it essentially new. I’ve found that the dry, slick finish does not attract dirt or allow it to cling to the line. These are just a few well-tested things I’ve found prolongs the life of my expensive fly lines and helps them shoot and float better. To each their own but the chemists who engineer fly lines warn against non-specific products on your fly lines. Some of these products are actually harmful to fly lines and speed up the deplastisizing process. Fly lines are just to expensive for me to go rummaging around in the garage or under the kitchen sink for something that may or may not work over time or may even prematurely the line. The products the manufacturers sell for their lines isn’t a huge profit center for them but is cheap insurance to get the most out of your lines. Sorry for the long, uncalled for post but I’m just one of those fly fishing and fly casting geeks who feel the fly line is the most important piece of gear we use in true fly fishing.

    Read carefully page 118 of NYmphs and the Trout, for the Pheasant tail Sawyer uses red enamelled copper wire of the sort used in transformer windings, ie inductors etc. He also 'cuts' the wire by work hardening it- bending it back and fore. Most commercial patterns use plain copper, the red wire is important and just tying a nymph with the red wire and some hares ear or seal fur is a very effective trout pattern. Page 125 of same book confirms that the killer bug was tied with ordinary silver fuse wire as Steve says.
