Phoenix, Az 1976 ish, Gordon Lightfoot concert at Veterans memorial coliseum. Very minimal band support. Mostly him on a stool with that trusty 12 string. He could surely deliver a story. We're lucky to have that music.
I remember that day well.I was thirteen years old and you to live by iron mountain michigan
.
does anyone know where the love of god goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours
when they measure the final tonage we will know a great deal more to this story.
I remember when this happened
My dad began his career at the Locks,n lived on Superior, in the Sault. This song makes me feel for the familys. I'm 64 now n still remember that November night. May they rest in peace 😢
The fact Gordon Lightfoot (creator of the song) asked for permission by the families of the crew and gave full royalties of the song to them just makes me feel really happy but also a bit sad.
Cool
Full royalties of the song? Is that another way of saying that they had the rights?
I second that motion. Love and respect to all
R.I.P. To All the crew and to Gordon as well.
It gives me chills as well .
Peace be with you!
Me as well.
😢👉🏾🎵
i saw these great ships i was in awwwww of them

I knew most of the men on the Fitz. RIP my friends

From the Chippewa on down Gordon's music will flow beyond the Great Lakes forever. R.I. P Gordon and the 29 mariners ❤.
Evan though I was born after the wreck of the EDMUND FITZGERALD and I mean way after in the late 80s my dad would play the song but I never knew it was based on a true story and I thought it was just a song but I did the research and it's giving the song a whole new meaning for me.
Were the bodies ever recovered?
They found the wreck but there was no one aboard.
I read that when Mr. Lightfoot passed away that they rang the bell again. Instead of 29 times but 30 times ..... Adding that extra ring for Gordon Lightfoot. Mr. Lightfoot gave all his royalies of this song to the families of those who perished on the Edmund Fittzgerald.
Going to college at SUNY Oswego, right on the shores of Lake Ontario, I’ve seen firsthand how it can go from glass, to monumental waves! RIP to all
wow this video ...... !!!!!!!! I live in Illinois and everytime I go to Wisconsin stare at the lake even though this happened in Superior... imagingin their final monents. During the covid lockdown I attended this memorial via online stream... it was eerie .. they rang the original bell and many relatives were there
R.I.P
Thank you for adding this video to Gordon Lightfoot’s amazingly crafted song.
I had hoped someone would make a song for the US cargo ship El Faro that sank in 2015 off the coast of Jacksonville, FL. This song has always stayed with me because of the sailors who went down with their ship. Shalom
When I first heard this song I didn't know it really happened! After I started reading about it I found out it happened 2 days after my 1st birthday.r I p to all one the ship I really hope you all found peace! Never forget!!!!!!@❤😢😢😢
I can absolutely understand this kind of stuff happening on the open ocean but on a lake I know it gets wicked I know it gets wild and deadly but why the hell did they not dock I really don’t understand. The lakes are big the great lakes are huge yes but they would’ve had plenty of time to get to one side or the other and dock is corporate greed is what made this happen and stubbornness because captain wanted to have this delivered. Our great lakes are big as fuck yes but it’s not open ocean. They could’ve got to safety before it got that bad.
I remember that day as if yesterday, My mother and I cried all day and night. Mom knew a large number of the crew. This was a very bad time for all the mariners who rode the lakes. R.I.P. May God keep you in his arms.
This ship went down two years before I was born. I remember hearing this song over the years as I grew up not fully understanding what it meant but now knowing what it means it’s very haunting and yet very powerful song to remind us that life is so precious. Just like the Titanic people never think that such a big ship would never flounder and yet God proves us so very wrong!. We are nothing but a speck on this Earth and we are here to leave our mark that we were here. But not every person will be remembered. One day these people will be forgotten as will Gordon Lightfoot. Only thing that ever truly survives is stone and even that changes over time.
This one’s for all you ..🫡🍻
I worked on th GREAT LAKES-RUTH HIDMAM CO. BLESS TBE CREW THAT WENT DOWN😢😢😢😢❤❤❤❤
Great song of❤
Simulation video clip at 3:43 is wrong. Water depth is way too deep. The ship was about 230ft longer than the total depth of her sinking location. At the angle shown in the video, she'd be hitting the lake floor at a 45 degree angle with 200 ft sticking out of the water's surface. She hit the ground almost immediately after being overtaken by the wave, which is why her radar signature disappeared on the Anderson's radar instrumentation after one pass. It only took 30 seconds to fully rest in her current location, but the "going down" part 1 was basically instant.
A sailing song that will live on for as long as the USA does.
RIP to the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald and to Gordon Lightfoot, creator of this genius tribute! God bless the USA!
I just can't explain how that song makes me feel . I've been on a commercial fishing boat out of johns pass Madeira beach FLA and we got cought in a storm that was supposed to be nothing but rain 130 miles out in the Gulf and it was called the no name storm turn into a monster 70 to 80 mph winds 18 to 20 ft waves it was just the Grace of GOD we made it boat wasn't fast enough to out run the storm 4 guys standing at the wheel and throttle taking those waves head on down in the trough full throttle climbing up out WJ2 60FT STEEL TRAWLER LONGLINE BOAT 9 BOATS SUNK THAT KNIGHT COAST GUARD COULDN'T COME HELP WEATHER WAS TO BAD FOR THERE HELICOPTERS RIPPED THE RADAR RADIO Antenna OFF SOME HOW THAT BOAT JUST WOULDN'T GO DOWN like I said the grace of GOD
I worked in the Upper Peninsula the summer of 1976 as a student engineer for a company that produced taconite pellets, the same as the cargo that went down with the Edmund Fitzgerald. I knew the news of the wreck prior to working there and then being on Lake Superior that summer 6 months or so after, the tragedy was still raw in Yooper’s minds. Then Lightfoot’s masterpiece came out. It was played endlessly once it dropped. I was able to tour the sister ship of the Fitzgerald which was docked in Marquette and being loaded with my plant’s taconite pellets in August 1976.
So heart touching......huge respect for the singer and all soul of this Edmund Fitzgerald
I understand this my grandfather was navy uss wasp cv7 she was sunk by Japanese
Man that is horrible I’m sorry to hear that
The first time I heard the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald I broke down and wept. And whenever I was in my car, and it came on the radio I had to pull over, because I couldn't see where I was driving. Here it is 2023 and the tears still come. I will never forget those 29 and the family who lost their loved ones.
I remember this like it was yesterday... born and raised in Burton Michigan and still in school at the time. Will never forget this.
Salure to the Edmobd Fithgeaeld and the 29 that went down with her
