One of the coolest things N&W ever did was choose a single chime plain bell for their freight engines.

This episode contains one of the most ironic lines in TAGS. At the end, Barney looks outside and wistfully says (referring to Warren) " I've had my place in the sun here for a lot of years, Ange. It's his town out there now." WARREN would be ousted after just two more episodes. RIP Andy Griffith, Don Knotts, Jack Burns, and all the cast from this episode (Ron Howard is not in this episode).

People fuss about this scene not being included on DVDs but I've never even seen it before. Apparently this scene has been cut from basically every version of this episode. I think it should be on a dvd though.

It's a very impressive and enjoyable sight seeing engine 1218 in operation, this locomotive is one of a few articulated steam locomotives to have operated in excursion service and it's a true shame that 1218's excursion service career only lasted for 4 years from 1987-1991.

I was working at the Big Island Paper Mill then. The memory of that flood I can never forget.

Wow I have never seen this part of the episode before.

This was recorded a few months before my spouse and I honeymooners in Woodfin, a bit up the road. We came to Asheville several times a year for many years thereafter and eventually moved there in '08 and lived there for a decade. We love Asheville, but all things change: we are back east again and in Roanoke now. Our recent revisit to Asheville was a little sad as many things we enjoyed are now gone.

Grew up in Asheville. Lived at 22 Kensington Rd in Beverly Hills. Remember when Howard Johnson’s was built. Loved there ice cream. Going downtown through the tunnel was a trip. My Dad repaired National Cash Registers and going out to eat at Tingles was a great family experience.

This engine needs to be running again soon rebuild her

I genuinely did not realize that tunnel road has always been this big lol

I never get tired seeing footage of N&W 1218 in operation, it's a true shame that this locomotive had such a short excursion service career.
